Adam, I just love the little blue skaters.

That early hit really threw me. There has been a fair (ie unfair) amount of diving so far, and I kind of hoped that was an example. I detest diving, which is all about showbiz and winning and nothing about sports, but has just become business as usual in soccer. It disfigures the"beautiful game" , but the nature of hockey should discourage its growth. I hope.

Carol:

Wow, what a shame. A fractured vertebrae here! Only 25 years old, damn!

Raymond sustained a ''vertebrae compression fracture'' early in Game 6 Monday night and his back injury needs three to four months to heal, the team said Tuesday. He was hurt 20 seconds into the game when defenseman Johnny Boychuk hit him during Boston's 5-2 win over Vancouver.

The check looked like no big deal. Just a weird angle I guess.

It's awful. I am still mad at Lucic for a similar gratuitous hit which imo put Montreal out of the series. Maybe my ideal of hockey (like some people's ideal of free America) never really existed, yet I can't help seeing it.

I was invited to watch the final with my son & co, a sweet gesture. His friends are lovely guys, but my nerves could not stand it, let alone my ears. I will probablu watch it on mute until the first goal, and I cant bear the pregame commentary in any way. shape or form. If Canucks win I will go back and read the liplicking forecasters with relish. If not, there's always next season.

That's the secret of sports (Riggenbach take note) - unreasonable, inextinguishable hope.

Carol:

A large virtue of sports is the hope of victory and the continued striving for excellence which is its own reward.

Good luck tonight.

I will take the 1.5 goals. Hell, I am 3-0. Therefore, for the sake of illustration, if I had bet 100 dollars per game, I would have had to give the book $110.00, which includes the "vig."*

Therefore, I am technically up $300.00, therefore, with this final bet, the worst result would still leave me plus $190.00 for the series. If I win tonight, then I would be up $400.00 for the series. Nice position to be in!

Adam

* Vigorish, or simply the vig, also known as juice or the take, is the amount charged by a bookmaker, or bookie, for his services. In the United States it also means the interest on a shark's loan. The term is Yiddish slang originating from the Russian word for winnings, выигрыш vyigrysh. Bookmakers use this practice to make money on their wagers regardless of the outcome. To minimize their risk, bookmakers do not want to have an interest in either side winning in a given sporting event. They are interested, instead, in getting equal betting on both outcomes of the event. In this way, the bookmaker minimizes his risk and always collects a small commission from the vigorish. The bookmaker will normally adjust the odds or the line, to attract equal action on each side of an event.

A fair odds bet: Two people want to bet on opposing sides of an event with even odds. They are going to make the bet between each other without using the services of a bookmaker. Each person is willing to risk $100 to win $100. After each person pays his $100, there is a total of $200 in the pot. The person who loses receives nothing and the winner receives the full $200. By contrast, when using a sportsbook with the odds set at −110 vs. −110 (10 to 11, 1.9090..) with vigorish factored in, each person would have to risk or lay $110 to win $100 (the sportsbook collects $220 "in the pot"). The extra $10 per person is, in effect, a bookmaker's commission for taking the action. This $10 is not in play and cannot be doubled by the winning bettor; it can only be lost. A losing bettor simply loses his $110. A winning bettor wins back his original $110, plus his $100 winnings, for a total of $210. From the $220 collected, the sportsbook keeps the remaining $10 after paying out the winner.

Congrats Adam, and all Boston fans. They are a terrific team with a proud history. Thomas is one great goalie.

Thanks for the primer on betting..next year I will take you to the cleaners.

I have found a Game of Thrones rerun to watch and this time I don't think I will mind the beheadings much at all.

Carol and all Vancouver fans congratulations - only two teams made it and it could have gone either way.

Great series.

You just ran into a hot goalie who basically played unconsciously great.

Michigan boy - Marotta should be proud.

Well, it is November and the playoffs might never approach closer for TO, so it behooves the Nation to make maple syrup while the sap is running and the Leafs are at the top of the tree.

The Jets are back. No words. Mark Chipman will someday join Tommy Douglas as an alltime Canadian hero.

Does anybody else read Down Goes Bown (Sean McIndoe)? He is brilliant. I especially like his fantasy scenes, like when Shanahan was interviewing for the Discipline job, or when Bettman held the Halloween party inviting all the NHL players. He usually features Christ Pronger -- outside the office door, revving up a chainsaw, or out in the parking lot with a crowbar.

I would like to provide links but you know my disability, so I'll probably just plagiarize him.

Heart with the Habs and the Saint John Seadogs,

CJ

This disability song is starting to sound quite "tinny" to my ear...posting this link took about five (5) mouse clicks, Ma'am...

Daunce, I'm quite sure you are really making up all these names and people, sports and prime ministers. But it's refreshing to imagine some alternate universe in which they really exist.

To Phil, come on, who could make up names like Byfuglien, Tootoo (yes, there were two of them) or the divinely apt Lecavalier?

Phil, have some further refreshment and meet the Mayor of Toronto, RobDoug Ford, a two-headed yet halfwitted specimen who has never watched the national TV network, had never heard of Canada's most famous author, and who campaigned on a the sound theory that a city exists to service its suburbs. In his austerity drive he has so far closed four museums and is trying to close the libraries, sell the zoo and bust the local unions (oh wait, most of the mayors try to do that).

Needless to state, he is a football coach.

Needless to state, he is a football coach. His dream is to bring a badly-needed NFL team to our sports deprived downtown core.

Isn't he cute? I remember his inauguration well.He got Don Cherry, yes, him, to give the speech. Don loudly, even for him, congratulated his bff Rob for "getting those pinkos out."

The morale amongst us who aspire to satire around here is at an alltime low. What is the point of writing anything when the mere facts are outSwifting Jonathan?

I just noticed that Shanahan is also from Etobicoke!!! Oh, God, Adam! Could DH be behind it all? You know Who I Mean. I think I better go to Evensong tonight, just in case.

"This hour has 22 minutes" is a top political comedy show here. The actors routinely ambush politicians in various personae (you can see some fun clips on Canadian. Boring thread) led by Mary Walsh in her character Marg Delahunty, Warrior Princess.

Last month they went to Ford's house. This was wrong, they should not have gone to his home but to City Hall, however they did it. Ford was getting into his car when Marg approached him. Naturally he was terrifed and called 911, three times. A gang of strangers led by a crazy lady was attacking him!

Of course you could not expect a busy man like him to recognize Canada's top comedienne, or the significance of TV cameras or a big van logoed "CBC". And his daughter, inside the house, was screaming in terror... it was Halloween and an old warrior princess lady was attacking her defenceless little daddy!

I cannot sanction this home invasion and I think they should all go to jail.

1. > He is now the Head of Discipline for the NHL [Daunce]

There is discipline in the NHL?

I guess that means you get punished with a $5 dollar fine for knocking an opponent's two front teeth out rather than only one.

2. Byfuglien?

Seriously???

...If I ever write a novel, I am going to have to use that as the name for one of my important characters. Beats Toohey and Mouch and has the connotation of being dazed, confused, messed up.

I love it too. Incidentally is is pronounced Bufflin which further connotes bumbling and baffled, which he obviously was on that boat and often is in the penalty box. "Huh? What am I doin in here..I didn't do nothin..."
