  1. A quick question. Was Rachael Scott the young women who was killed after she said she believed in God? I have there was a young women who this happened to.
  2. Barbara; I agree that much of the horror of 9-11 has been forgotten. I was very sorry at the failure of United 93 at the box office. I did not attend the Oliver Stone movie because I was afraid of what he would do to the story. I hope people will buy the two films on dvd.
  3. Hey Guys; Can't we do better than John Holmes. He had a horrible death. I don't think he's going to be long remembered. I think I would have liked to have been in Edison's lab in East Orange, NJ any time he was working.
  4. Roger & Michael; Thank you for both of these posts. I can remember being very touched when I watched the members of Congress singing God Bless America right after the attacks of 9-11. It was the more approiate respose to the event then the singing of Star Splanged Banner would have been.
  5. There is a big link of the progressives (modern liberials) to the Nanny State. Progressives supported prohibation. They always want to improve people in the worst way. Thus they are leadings opponents of smoking and now fast food.
  6. I think I agree with pencilin. The blood pressure drugs I take daily are probably as important for my life.
  7. Some time after Miss Rand's review of Capuletti I visited Hammer Galleries. You could still look at some of Capuletti's work and I was impressed. I also saw Not Guilty and Unitias to Moore. Not Guilty is the cover work on Den Uyl's book on the Fountainhead. Unitias to Moore is on the Coridier web site. I thought he did great work. I was sorry to hear about his early death.
  8. Thanks for posting. the NBI Art Reproductions. Does anyone know where these paintings are now. I suspect Barbara may have an idea.
  9. I agree with Jordan about the George Smith postings Do post them on OL.
  10. I came into John Wayne Airport but missed the statue. Thanks for the picture. The statue looks a little like the Duke in Rio Bravo. I have to say my favorite Wayne film is The Searchers.
  11. Why in discussing free verse do I keep remembering Robert Frost saying the "free verse was like playing tennis without a net."
  12. Dave2; If I am not mistaken Howard Raork was the sole owner of his firm. His designing Courtland was an arrangement with Peter Keating Howard supplies the genius. Keating the political pull. Howard on his buildings was a contactor to the owners building the buildings.
  13. I too am happy Mayor Daley vetoed those two bills. Smoking legistislation is bad all over the country. A town in suburban Maryland tried to ban smokeing outside. It was stopped. There are a huge number of busy bodies in this country.
  14. I agree completely about AMC. If you have any influence with your cable provider get them to carry TCM. There's nothing worth watching on AMC except when they do the commentary on the films
  15. Blackhorse; I have the feeling Longfellow has lost the reputation he once had. I have never read Evangeline in the orginial but I am famaliar with the story. It is a great unrequited love story.
  16. Michael; I'm not sure what you're refering to. What painting was refering to by Objectivists as death-primised? I'm trying to tell what Mrs Sures offered as her explanation of the painting Diminishing Returns.
  17. Blackhorse; Of course precautions are necessary. Even the most open border question would want keep people out who have infectious diseases. People who are advocates of destroying the county and the people in it.
  18. John; I think you and I are on the same page. I was trying to remember something from almost forty years. "Playful" is a word Mrs. Sures used.
  19. Leonard Peikoff has a recorded lecture he gave about poetry he liked. Check the ARI Bookstore web site. I thought some of the recommedations were trite.
  20. I agree! I don't care for women with tatoos. I don't feel great about men with tattoos but that's more exceptable.
  21. Susan; Welcome! Glad to have more people from the Great White North. I can't see Pitt as Reardan He's too young. Reardan is six or seven years older than the other heroes. Again Welcome!
  22. Hello from Washington DC. Welcome to Objectivist Living. Are you in the part of Canada that has all the oil. Do you want to suceed from the rest of the country and let the rest of them freeze in the dark?
  23. Blackhorse; I guess you live where men are men and women are glad of it. Welcome from someone who lives in the heart of the "evil empire"
  24. Mary Ann Sures gave her course on esthetics in DC in 1968. She was asked a question about Diminishing Returns. She said that the painting was not sur-realist but was a light hearted fantasy. She also noted that are self-portraits of Frank in the Christmas balls. I hope this clears some things up.
