  1. Kat Thanks again for the tread. When did Harry'the enforcer' Schwartz come on the scene. Barbara; one of the things is that you and Nathan are being airbrushed out by the ARI crowd. This was done in Ayn Rand A Sense of Life as we know.
  2. Dragonfly your spelling is correct. I met Ralph Epstein in DC when he was an MD at National Institutes of Health. He was at NIH in lieu of being in the military because of the draft. He was the only president of the DC Ayn Rand Society which broke up because of the Split. He once told some of us that in the first Basic lecture series that you had to attend every lecture because the location was changed. Barbara, I have read your story about the Polaris submarine and I suspect that there was a fair number of military types attending NBI courses. Is this true? Kat thanks again for this thread.
  3. Barbara; Thanks for all your information. One correction the name is Richard Nickerson. I was also given the impression that Dr. Nickerson's wife may have taken one of Ayn Rand's writing courses. I sorry to say I don't know her maiden or first name. I was also told that following the NBI tour to Europe in 1967 Mary Ann Sures and Dr. Locke visited the O'Connor's apartment suggesting that Miss Rand had met Dr. Locke. Some of my information is second hand in that it comes from patients of Dr. Nickerson who lived in DC and were friends of mine. Thank you again for all your information What about Alan Gotthaulf? I hope I spelled the name right.
  4. Let me see if I can supply some information. Charles Sures who was an attorney in Washington DC attended NBI lectures in NYC and met Miss Rand. Miss Rand introduced to Charles to Mary Ann Sures.(Rukavina) Mary Ann and Charles were married on Jan 16, 1963. Charles was NBI rep in DC. In 1966 when I took Basic Charles had an assistant Dr. Edwin Locke. Dr Locke later became NBI rep in DC. Dr Locke is regular lecturer at ARI events. Dr Blumenthal's practice became very large and he recommend two other pyschrists Dr Richard Nickerson and Dr Lonnie Leonard. Dr Nickerson had to close his practice because he was using Primal Scream techniques and was attacked by prominent Objectivists causing him to lose his patients. Dr Leonard had to give up his practice because he was sexually abusing some of his female patients. This is outlined in the book Terapist. Dr Locke started a pratice in the DC area. Dr Edith Packer who later married George Riesman had a practice also. Riesman was a friend of Murry Rothbard and Robert Hessen. Rothbard may have introduced Riesman and Hessen to Ayn Rand. If I think of other items I will record them. People who are interested in my sources may contact me at my e-mail address.
  5. Thank you, John. Your poem gave me an Ayn Rand moment. Your poem reminded that we take so much for granted. I will be going across the country two weeks from now in 1 % of the time it took my ancester to cross it one-hundred sixty years ago. Thank you again. See you at Chapman
  6. I have just found out that Logan Darrow Clements will be at the Summer Seminar. This is great news. Logan is doing things in the real world and fighting the horrors of eminent domain in creative ways.
  7. Roger; Thanks for the reply. I don't who owns the rights to those reviews. Robert Kephart has died but he may have sold them.
  8. Every year AFI does a movie complation. You can find the full list of hundred at www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/cheers.htm This year it was the above title which is a way of saying inspiring films. The #1 was It's a Wonderful Life. I suspect that most Objectivists would not consider this there favorite inspiring film. My question is what film would you consider your most inspiring film.
  9. This is for Roger Bissell. I remember reading a review by Barbara Branden of the Charles Bronson movie Death Wish for Books for Libertarians. I remember Barbara only doing this review for that publication.
  10. This is in reference to Jordan's post. I do have read Gulag and thought it was very good. In the same spirit you might want to look at Red Star over Hollywood and Robert Mayhew's book about Ayn Rand's HUAC testimony. The influence of Communism in the US is almost completely unknown to people today and these books help expose it.
  11. I saw Miss Rand several times in 1966 and 1967 at NBI in New York City. I also saw an appearance in 1966 at Basic opening lecture in Washington DC. I found her behavior very good at these occassions. I don't remember her being angry except when she was discussing the draft and Veti-nam war at the Washington appearance. She said something about the people in Washington and got a friendly laugh and then apologized saying she was not thinking of these Washington people. She did not lash out at any of the questioners. I never saw her at Ford Hall Forum but listened to a couple of her lectures and on these occassions I was disappointed in aspects of her behavior.
  12. This is slightly different subject. The latest edition of the Three Plays The Night of January 16th there seems to be the delition of Nancy Lee Faulker's desire to have children. Is this one of the changes made when the play was finally produced. It is interesting that the introduction to The Night Of January 16th mentions NB's reading of the plays at NBI. It was written for the Objectivist in 1968 but is reprinted in the current edition of the plays
  13. I can't wait till July 1. I will be arriving about 4 pm on the 1st at the confernce and I am going to the bbq. This will be my fifth conference. I've already met some of you but I am looking forward to meeting all of you. I plan to start checking this forum for further info. Thanks.
  14. I really like this site. I was just looking at Sciabarra corner. The other topics you deal with are done well. One further thought about Chris Sciabarra, my few dealing with him have always been very good. I think the book Russian Radical is a very good atttempt at a very important topic. I think Diana's attack on Chris could be predicted. Thanks again for the site.
  15. Michael; Thanks for the welcome. I'm looking forward to meeting and talking to you also.
  16. This is in reply to Michael's post about ARI. ARI has also helped increase the sales of Miss Rand's books. I think some of the books they have produced are well worth having. The Essays on We the Living and Anthem are very well done. The above is two separte books Mayhew's book on AR's HUAC testimony is good contribution to her scholarship.
  17. I am Chris Grieb. I live in Washington DC were I have been interested in Objectivism since the early 1960ths. I took courses at NBI in several cities including NYC. I will be attending the TOC Summer Seminar at Chapman College. Is anyone else going to be there. I look forward to hearing from all of you.
  18. Casablanca, Singing in the Rain, The Searchers, To Kill A Mockingbird, and this past year Brokeback Mountain. I also love Now Voyager with Bette Davis. I'm always willing to settle for the stars.
  19. I think Peter Schwartz's motives for changing The New Left are obvious. He gets to have his name assciated with Ayn Rand. He would never have got this on his own.
  20. We had two famous actors die recently. Jean Simmons was a British actress in the 40ths,50ths and 60ths. She appeared in Oliver's Hamlet, Elmer Gantry, The Happy Ending among others. I think she always did solid work but never got the critical acclaim she deserved. Watch the coming retrospective on TCM.
