Back in the late 80's my main form of exercise was lap swimming. I would do 60 laps of a 25 meter pool, 5x a week. After a few years I switched over to the stairclimber, which was recently introduced to the health clubs. Well, the years have passed and about a year ago arthritis affected my joints, causing considerable inflammation and pain to the hip and back joints. Not wanting to give up exercise I decided to give swimming another go. That was 6 months ago. My first attempt lasted about 6 laps before I needed to catch my breadth. What I rediscovered though, was the exhilarating feeling of gliding through the water, pain free and alone in my own thoughts. After I finished I noticed how good I felt and decided swimming would be my main workout as I approach my "senior" years. Since my re-launch, I'm happy to say that I now I do 30-40 laps, non-stop in approx. 25-30 minutes, 5 days a week. Getting back up to 40 non-stop laps was not as difficult as I first thought. I just added 1 lap to my regimen every week or so until I hit 40. My endurance (breathing) has increased unbelievably. The progress came quickly. My weight has dropped some 20 lbs. & I feel great. I would like to recommend swimming to those OL visitors, particularly those up in age. Consider it a physical and mental tune-up. You deserve it!
