  1. Chris,

I debated this with my wife tonight. He had a child. How do you define coward? I define it , "Heath...whatever his name is."

Jody; I haven't seen the latest information on Heath's case. For that reason I am not going to condemn him and stand by my statement that the story is sad.

  2. For a discussion of the movie, see Jack Wheeler's article, "Charlie Wilson and Ronald Reagan's War." Jack was intimately involved in the events described in the film and the book.

Barbara Barbara; Thanks for the link.

Jack Wheeler was very involved with all these events as you say. It would be lovely to think that Jack is stirring things up in Iran.

  3. Chris,

My grandparents on my father's side had the Booth Tarkington books. Penrod, Penrod and Sam and others. I read a bunch of them as a kid. They were delightfully politically incorrect and they were hilarious.

None of them would be published in today's environment, but they provide a unique view of Ameircana at that time.

    Jim

    Jim;

I have not read Booth Tarkington. I have the feeling the movies were not close to the books. You are absolutly correct they would not be published today. Chris

  4. Chris,

I always enjoyed Book Notes with Brian Lamb every Sunday night. He seemed to have many conservative and libertarian authors, as well as U.S. historians.

Neil; Brian Lamb is a great interviewer. Book TV has a program where the author is interviewed by someone who disagrees with the author. This weekend for example Grover Norquist interviewed a New Republic author who has written an attack on supply siders.

Neil; I have also met Mr. Lamb in person and he is very polite and approachable. He's getting the Medal of Freedom this week. He earned it.

  5. Chris,

Perhaps Burness, the administrator who publcly badmouthed former coach Pressler in apparent violation of a prior settlement, will get fired.

But is the Board prepared to fire its own Chairman? He's been a major supporter and protector of President Brodhead all along.

    Robert Campbell

Robert; You're probably right. Sadly! Chris

  6. Chris,

Amazon's delay announcement was merely precautionary.

I received the book on Friday and (despite other commitments that are limiting my reading time) I'm well past past page 100 now. The book is a genuine page-turner, well deserving of the blurb from John Grisham that appears on the front cover.

The first chapter, a concise history of Duke University's strained relationship with Durham, North Carolina, has convinced me to never apply for a job there.

    Robert

Robert; I think that is good idea especially as long as Brodhead is President of Duke. I would think the Board of Trustees of Duke would be upset at all the law suits Duke has had to settle as a result of Brodhead's actions. Chris

  7. Chris,

Amazon now tells me they won't be able to ship me the book till October 8 or thereabouts.

I'm wondering whether orders for the book haven't substantially exceeded the publisher's (low?) sales targets.

    Robert Campbell

I was at the B&N downtown store in DC yesterday. They had copies althrough they didn't have them well displayed. I looked over a couple sections of the book and what I saw looks great. I don't know I soon I will get my reserve copy.
