Stuart Taylor at Cato

Chris Grieb

Stuart Taylor was Cato talking about his book on the Duke case. The program is on Cato.org and will be on Book TV. This is a report on somethings Mr Taylor commented on.

Mr Taylor said the fact that the book in not in book stores was a bad decision made by the publisher. He said the publisher did not think the book would be a success.

Durham in Wonderland will be closing because C B Johnson will be teaching in Israel and the distance is too great.

Watch the program! It's very good.

Chris,

The publisher doesn't think the book will sell? Why?

I ordered mine from Amazon--it's supposed to arrive in about a week.

Robert; I think the publishers doesn't want the book to sell. C B Johnson has said Amazon has been very good. Chris

Chris,

Taylor and Johnson's book is the subject of the entire "Lexington" column in this week's Economist. The column gives the book an enthusiastic review, emphasizing the roles of the media and of the Group of 88 in aiding and abetting Mike Nifong's malicious prosecution.

The author ("Lexington" is a regular column on American affairs; the author's identity is kept secret) even apologizes because an April 2006 "Lexington" column lent credence to the false charges against the three lacrosse players.

Robert; The reviews have all been great. Not being able to find a copy in the nation's capital is frustrating to say the least. Chris Grieb

Chris,

Amazon now tells me they won't be able to ship me the book till October 8 or thereabouts.

I'm wondering whether orders for the book haven't substantially exceeded the publisher's (low?) sales targets.

I was at the B&N downtown store in DC yesterday. They had copies althrough they didn't have them well displayed. I looked over a couple sections of the book and what I saw looks great. I don't know I soon I will get my reserve copy.

Chris,

Amazon's delay announcement was merely precautionary.

I received the book on Friday and (despite other commitments that are limiting my reading time) I'm well past past page 100 now. The book is a genuine page-turner, well deserving of the blurb from John Grisham that appears on the front cover.

The first chapter, a concise history of Duke University's strained relationship with Durham, North Carolina, has convinced me to never apply for a job there.

Robert; I think that is good idea especially as long as Brodhead is President of Duke. I would think the Board of Trustees of Duke would be upset at all the law suits Duke has had to settle as a result of Brodhead's actions. Chris

Chris,

I should hope the Board would be upset with President Brodhead, on account of the big settlements that Duke has had to pay out, but the Board chairman was Brodhead's biggest supporter during the entire malicious prosecution. So I have to wonder whether they will get rid of Brodhead, as they should.

Robert; I think you are sadly right on this topic. Brodhead's excuse for some of his actions is lack of information but some his statements should not have even been made. Chris

Robert; I was in Borders today looking for the Taylor book. When I checked the store on-line catalog the book was not yet available. I later found it hidden away.

Why do is suspect the pc police are on the job.
