I'd like to open a field of discussion for the QAnon phenomena.  Here is where I will post in already existing material presented at OL by members.  I'll take direction from comments and from poll answers.

  • What is Q / QAnon?
  • Why should anyone on OL pay attention?
  • Is skepticism justified?
  • What are the main questions readers have in mind to guide discussion?

No special rules or guidelines for this thread; the OL guidelines are good enough and will apply here. .  Please keep personal abuse to a minimum. Creative insults are kosher, but if they aren't on topic, why post them?

Our forum leader opened discussion on the phenomena back in January of this year.  My key-word search-term was "QAnon,"  not "Q," so the search results will not necessarily return all incidence of discussion touching on the phenomena.

I will post a thing about him later, probably in a new thread or on the Conspiracy Theory thread. He's been spot on accurate predicting a lot of recent happenings right before they happen. More recently he's been doing some twittering and he seems to like hamming it up a bit, so here are a few teasers:

QAnon Anoymous podcast team-member 'Travis View' had a very popular tweet this week. I tried to wakeboard his wave ...

Not much discussed here is the probably-temporary decoupling of 8chan from the "normal" internet. The site is now being distributed through an unauthorized application -- a peer-to-peer distributed virtual- host software robot network.  From most accounts, the new format downloads parts of itself to your machine and of course knows your hard address, thus defeating the essentially-anonymous nature of 8chan. Apparently the distribution strongly suggests you serve yourself the 'refurbished' 08chan via Tor (which is an internet browser that 'spoofs' your address and serves as a virtual private network).

But, there's always a but, folks are not bothering to use Tor as a protection-layer. So if some 8chan freak posts images whose possession is a criminal offence, you may have sexual abuse imagery infest your machine. Never a good look.

An excerpt from a Kevin Poulsen article at the Daily Beast:

Quote

The distinguishing feature of the new site is that it lives on ZeroNet, a peer-to-peer network designed by information activists to allow for uncensorable websites immune from government or corporate intervention. Instead of relying on a central server, a ZeroNet site is hosted in bits and pieces by everyone browsing it, making it virtually impossible to shut down.

“Hard as they try, they will never stop us,” enthused one poster to the white supremacist “/pol/” board on 08chan. “We are smarter and more innovative.”

“The old 8chan site may be ashes, but this is the phoenix egg buried beneath,” another wrote.

There’s just one catch. Peer-to-peer networks expose a user’s internet address to anyone who cares to look. That’s how copyright lawyers catch people trading movies, music and software, and it’s how police and FBI agents arrest pedophiles trading child porn online.

Whither Q? Whither the 'real' Q?  This is not much discussed analytically in the community of QAnons. Desiderata and all that.

In other related news, today is officially "Everyone Is A Conspiracy 'Theorist' Day." It's a free for all, so I say may the best theory win!

My modest contribution to the festive literature ...

You all sure do expend a lot of neuronal activity on a kid in his mother’s basement. What’s the motivation? Is it that you still believe that’s what Q is and that’s the max level of opponent you feel comfortable taking head-on?

Today, no Q.  The red-pilled and the could-be-deluded are having a fairly good time constructing the culture of belief during the prophet's absence. Even if 8chan manages to find a functioning, secure replacement or resurrects itself like Stormfront, even if Q somehow manages to establish his or her or their 'verified' status ... the groupings or movements around the Q phenomena will continue as a kind of end-days body of beliefs. Some people -- and not all of them zany -- have invested a lot of heart and soul into the 'movement' (or whatever it is).

The founder of 8chan, programmer Frederick Brennan, has not been quiet about his role in 8chan's birth and gestation and his separation from earlier stances. He now vows to do anything in his power to prevent 8chan coming back as it was ... (meaning, to paraphrase, as a site that allows incitement to and glorification of terrorist violence)

The valiant un-pilled trio at QAnon Anonymous podcast did a fairly extensive and cogent interview with Frederick Brennan a couple of days. I've tried to cue the player in the tweet below to start just at the Brennan interview, but if that doesn't work -- just jump to around 12:15.  Lots of interesting details, some of which have leaked back into the 'fake news' for further dissemination.

I did not know he was latelyso hard-core an opponent of 8chan. Even if you find all Q discussion pointless or 'below' you, or alternatively, you already know what you know about Brennan, worth a listen for the non-technical details of how so-called 'chan culture' came to be. Of note is that Brennan 'converted' to Christianity during his Philippine labours for Watkins pere et fils.

It is fascinating to watch the evolution of their attacks on Q. Not a kid in his mother’s basement anymore, now Q is the “prophet” of a new religion. You losers crack me up 😆.

How does this translate from the passive-aggressive Billy-talk? The disagreeable MSK, Ellen and Jonathan should focus their religious detection on Q followers, instead of you and climate liar fanatics? Is that it? Is that really your response to their assertions that you suffer a virulent religiosity? Call Q a prophet and proclaim, “No, no, look over there for that!” Seriously? Damn, you are a loser.

No Q today, save for spoofs.

This satiric item from Real True News parody-site stuffs the obvious jibes in one bag. The deeply-embedded Man Of Your Deep-State-Destroying Dreams ... is having troubles with his "comms."

Still, the Watkinses ask us to await 8chan''s unfettered return sometime in September. Unlikelier things have happened

”Q said! Q said!” I love the lunatics you hold up. They never cite a post number or date, they just blather on and on making up stuff he said and promised, PROMISED!

You sure do cherry pick some fine lunatics. Are they really just people like you, pretending to be into Q? Looks that way to me. I look at a lot of Q research and commentary and I never run into any of the clowns you hold up here as “Q people.”

You need to try a lot harder. You are worse at this than climate hysteria, maybe best to get back to that. Remember, pictures with a lot of red make people hear thunder like when they see your Fallacy Bingo Cards. Red. You’ve been using earthy yellows. Red.

The satirical laughs about Q don’t fit the narrative starting from a few months ago that Q is the leader of homicidal White Supremacists. Did the polling disclose just how funny the vast majority of people found that?

Are we back to a narrative that Q and related researchers are dumb, misguided, harmless and good fodder for fun satire? Q is a silly kid is mom’s basement again? Following the narrative changes is fun.

I had earlier noted that one of the Watkinses (owners/operators of 8chan) promised that the site would be back online in September (5th), around the time the elder Watkins may testify before Congress.

Watkins the Elder said in a quote at a Filipino site that the notorious Internet imageboard was not going to be back. Emphases added.

Quote

Jim Watkins, owner of website 8chan, made the statement in an affidavit submitted to the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) through his attorney in the Philippines. The site had been linked to mass shootings in Christchurch, Poway and El Paso, Texas.

The PNP-ACG began investigation on 8chan after authorities said Watkins and the website's creator Fredrick Brennan lived in the Philippines.

According to Watkins’ lawyer, his client is currently in the US preparing for a congressional hearing. But Watkins has expressed willingness to cooperate in the ACG investigation.

Watkins mentioned in his statement that 8chan is now offline and that he plans to keep it shut.

"8ch.net is currently offline with no immediate plans to bring it back. The website was an anonymous social-media platform where users could post text and images. Similar to Facebook or Twitter, some users abused the system by posting illegal content," he said.

Part of the fun of Q is that you can invert a normal process of deduction.  Our old friend Poker and Politics highlights this phenomena. If you cannot trust NOAA, who can you trust?

Trust No. 1.

But the best part is how Q allows you to avoid your climate doom hysteria thread where multiple good faith discussants await response to questions you don’t have the cognitive power to answer.

The big demonstration at the monument has attracted at least a couple of hundred people. The live Periscope feed has no sound, which is kind of sad for the producers.

New beginnings and ... wrath.  Which makes me think of the lust for a purge, and the Committee of Public Safety.

There is no such thing as a “Q rally,” Q has called for no rallies.

Are those Antifa pretending to be sincerely interested in Q?

I have never heard of any of these clowns you hold up, Billy. It looks like bullshit to me. All of it. Try again.

Jon,

In compensation, there are such things as "impeachment rallies" -- in DC at that.

From Redstate today:

Embarrassing: Leftist Groups Threw An “Impeach Trump” Rally In DC And No One Showed Up

From Breitbart Monday:

Leftists’ D.C. ‘Impeach Donald Trump’ Protests a Bust

The people who staged this were not a bunch of nobodies. Take a look.

From the Breitbart article (my bold):

Quote

The website, impeachmentaugust.org, said the protest would take place at 11:00 a.m. at 1st Street SE, which is near the House side of the Capitol. The website states that the protest is supported by several leftist and anti-Trump groups, including Indivisible, MoveOn, Need to Impeach, Stand Up America, March of Truth, By the People, Common Cause, Free Speech for People, Democracy for America, Progressive Democrats of America, Credo, and democrats.com.

The eventbrite.com protest notice said it would take place at noon on Monday on the “Capitol lawn below the steps,” but no one showed up for that protest.

The idea was to shame Congress, on its first day back from its August break, into getting rid of the dastardly Trump. But it's awfully hard to shame anyone for anything if there is no one doing the shaming.

:)

The Redstate article mentioned another interesting tidbit about leftie demonstrations. Many, many, many of them are nothing more than activist-funded hooks for the fake news media to spin a fake news narrative to see if they can get a little something going--to try to make a fact happen where there is nothing. The reference in the first paragraph is to the public's lack of interest in impeachment.

(My bold below.)

Quote

... the mainstream media won’t report on this in order to avoid giving any indication that impeachment just isn’t realistic. The very word seems to attract eyes, and they’re in a time when they need all the eyes they can get thanks to their free-falling ratings.

It’s par for the course, though. These kinds of things happen all the time, and you never hear about them.

The first time I learned that protests often go unattended was when I lived in Denver, Colorado. At the time there was a massive push for gun control by the Democrats in that state, and an anti-gun group planned to have a rally below the Capitol steps. I went down to see what I could when the rally was supposed to happen and found one lone girl standing there with a sign and three or four squirrels.

Oh...

Well, there's Trump again...

I forgot we were talking about the futility of Q nobodies who stage rallies in DC where a mere couple of hundred people show up...

:)

I didn’t even know about any rally until I saw Billy promoting about it here.

Jon,

Neither did I.

I don't think it was publicized anywhere important.

On the other hand, the entire world through the fake news mainstream media knew about the impeachment demonstrations.

They didn't report on the turnout (or lack of turnout to be more exact), but everyone knew about the impeachment demonstrations.

Jon,

Is the AnOn66 personage someone you think is a fake Q fan?

I thought you'd posted some AnOn66 things, but maybe I'm misremembering.

Might be fake.

I may have. I just looked at the feed and it’s all fine, I guess. Except that no one I regard as sincere and that I keep track of pushed any rally.

For now I don’t know about that account, but I am certain many will turn up fake.

Jon,

Thanks.

I'm glad to be alerted that there are ones to be suspicious of.  I've noticed disparities - but then there are plenty of disparities amongst O'vishes or any other ideological groupings.  In the Q case, however, the sound of it from what you're saying is that there are attempts at discrediting via pretenses of being fans.

I did several different kinds of searches for AnOn66 and OL.

Nothing at all comes up except what is recently discussed in this thread.

I think William is simply trying to present and focus on the excesses of fringe people as an attempt to brand them as the face of the larger group.

In other words, do what President Trump pulled off with The Squad and the Democratic Party.

With one major difference.

Trump knows how to do it.

William is at the pre-newbie level where he still doesn't know that he doesn't know. But he's trying and I don't see him quitting, so before long he will become aware that he has been mostly bopping around unknown unknowns (to him) up to now. It's gonna be a long hard slog, but, to take recourse to Chinese inspiration (which should please him), the longest journey starts with the first step.

:)
