What a piece of work is a man,

how noble in reason,

how infinite in faculties,

in form and moving how express and admirable,

in action how like an angel,

in apprehension how like a god!

Shakespeare, Hamlet

I suppose Xray will now accuse Shakespeare of being a man-worshiper.

War is God's way of teaching Americans geography.--Ambrose Bierce

Excellent! One of my favorite people!

Remember, "All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a philosopher." - Ambrose Bierce

Thank you for reminding me just how smart Bierce was. Bierce and Menken are outstanding in American letters.

And a heaven in a wild flower;

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand

And eternity in an hour."

Lin Yutang is interesting, I have ordered his The Importance of Living.

Ted, from what I've seen of it, this is an excellent choice.

Yutan has a charming style, a keen eye, and is a highly original auto-didactic thinker I believe.

If you are asking me to do so, yes, I will comment once I see the book.

My favorite AR quote:

"Reality, to be commanded, must be obeyed"

That's Francis Bacon. Rand was quoting.

The correct quote is: Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed

Rand quotes Francis Bacon in "The Metaphysical Versus the Man-Made."

The best and briefest identification of man's power in regard to nature is Francis Bacon's "Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed." In this context, "to be commanded" means to be made to serve man's purposes; "to be obeyed" means that they cannot be served unless man discovers the properties of natural elements and uses them accordingly.

I seem to recall that Rand did say, "Reality, to be commanded, must be obeyed," as a gloss on Bacon's famous aphorism. But I couldn't turn anything up with a search on the Objectivism Research CD-ROM.
