Rare Ayn Rand Manuscript to Auction at Sotheby's on June 18

Capitalists and defenders of liberty will have an unusual opportunity to buy an original Ayn Rand manuscript. Arriving at auction this week is Ayn Rand’s handwritten speech, “The Intellectual Bankruptcy of Our Age,” her first speech at Ford Hall Forum. Delivered on March 26, 1961 to a packed auditorium, this speech is a landmark in Ayn Rand’s career and in the history of Objectivism.

Over fifty pages in length, the handwritten speech is the most substantial original Rand manuscript to arrive on the market in over a decade. Marsha Malinowski, Senior Vice President of Sotheby's, notes: "Her jagged and deliberate penmanship is characteristically powerful. The fifty-two pages of text are riddled with hundreds of her own additions, deletions, and corrections."

This manuscript illuminates Ayn Rand’s fundamental thinking on the necessity of capitalism as the foundation of a free society, and on the major forces that have obstructed the advance of capitalism though history. Most important, this manuscript will offer its owner a seldom-experienced view of the dynamic creative process of one of the great minds of our era.

In 1983, Ford Hall Forum showcased this manuscript at its 75th anniversary gala auction, where it was acquired by its current owner. The Sotheby’s pre-auction estimate for the manuscript is $60,000-80,000.
