Crisis of Command

America’s Broken Civil-Military Relationship Imperils National Security

Quote

Civilian control over the military is deeply embedded in the U.S. Constitution; the armed forces answer to the president and legislature. Starting in 1947, Congress built robust institutions designed to maintain this relationship. But over the past three decades, civilian control has quietly but steadily degraded. Senior military officers may still follow orders and avoid overt insubordination, but their influence has grown, while oversight and accountability mechanisms have faltered. Today, presidents worry about military opposition to their policies and must reckon with an institution that selectively implements executive guidance. Too often, unelected military leaders limit or engineer civilians’ options so that generals can run wars as they see fit.

Civilian control is therefore about more than whether military leaders openly defy orders or want to overthrow the government. It’s about the extent to which political leaders can realize the goals the American people elected them to accomplish. Here, civilian control is not binary; it is measured in degrees. Because the military filters information that civilians need and implements the orders that civilians give, it can wield great influence over civilian decision-making. Even if elected officials still get the final say, they may have little practical control if generals dictate all the options or slow their implementation—as they often do now.

Trump returning to social media with 'his own platform' in 2-3 months: adviser
Jason Miller tells Fox News' '#MediaBuzz' the platform will 'completely redefine the game'

I don't know if or when Donald Trump might officially take up a reserved account at Jason Miller's promised platform -- which is now live and happening. It's GETTR!

Gettr uses the most familiar Twitter app conventions. You can follow, search, reply, favourite, repost. You get a little round face and a banner and a bio and a hot URL.

You can add videos, images, links to your posts, and the platform's backend reads standard Open Graph meta-data code from your link -- it will fill your post with the page title and assigned image. It's serviceable and as promised, so high marks for the effort. It can't beat Telegram on Telegram's reach right now, but its interface and functions are more familiar to Twitter or Parler users - without Parler's sucking up personal details. It's like a baby Gab, without Gab's righteous editorial leadership.

I'll update this comment with some imagery ... at the moment the "feed" is full of odd and worse anime porn and intense bot action.

Apparently, the official debut of Gettr is July 4. Up to now, there is a beta version pumping and a hell of a lot of fake news.

Here is some info I've gathered over the last couple of days.

First, I have been trying to sign up for 2 days, but it hits a point where I get a notice like "Something went wrong. Please try again later." I have not been the only one this has happened to.

Here is Jason Miller talking about Gettr with Steve Bannon earlier today:

Jason Miller Debuts New Free Speech Social Platform GETTR

image.png

At first I didn't think Getter was anything but another flop like Parler, but from where I sit now, this looks like the real deal.

According to what Jason Miller said (on being pressed by Steve Bannon and Raheem), Trump will only sign up at his own leisure and he knows that's the best way to handle Trump. Since Jason is Stephen Miller's brother and Stephen is one of Trump's favorite speech writers and advisors, I think it's a foregone conclusion that, if there are no technical fuck-ups or massive failures, Trump will sign on after a time for proof of concept to be clear. (That's what he did with Rumble.)

I think the Trump part didn't make it into this clip. So here is the full episode.

Jason has promised that July 4, there will be no more problems with sign-ups.

The same Chinese billionaire, Guo Wengui, who is funding Bannon's War Room is funding this venture. They are setting it up so that new users can suck their entire Twitter feeds from the beginning of time into Gettr for a fresh start, but based on their previous tweeting.

Another reason I believe this will happen in a big way is that Gua NEEDS this to happen. He's on a personal mission to destroy the CCP. (Just listen to the song at the end of a full episode of Bannon's War Room, with Guo posing like a rock star, even a boxer, and so on as the lyrics go on about taking down the CCP. :) )

I think Guo wants to take out the American social media tech giant toadies of the CCP. Taking out Twitter as a start--and it's influence on holding back Trump and the MAGA movement's social media communications--would be a massive win for him since MAGA candidates winning the 2022 elections and Trump winning the presidency again in 2024 will be a massive loss for the CCP.

So Gettr looks to me like a good thing, not like my experience with the beta version up to now.

Let's see what happens on Sunday. I'm not even going to try to sign up again until then. But I'm optimistic.

I signed up with no problem (my handle is @mikellyusabr).

So far I like it. Starting from scratch, I could only find people to follow using the search, but it feels robust and fast. I just typed in a keyword (trump :) ), and saw what posts popped up. For the posters I liked, I hovered over the name and clicked "follow."

When I typed in bitcoin, a group of users appeared along with different ways to sort them.

I think this is a great start and solid base to build on. Of course, as with all social media sites, more and more improvements will be coming out all the time.

The only problem I have with Gettr so far is that it is centralized. If ownership ever changes and a bad guy gets in, it goes to shit. But for now, I think it's worth giving it a shot.

I'm not really using Gettr yet, but here is something that is bringing joy to my heart.

Jason Miller set the trap and Jack Dorsey walked right into it.

Jason had Gettr coded so that people would be able to retrieve all their tweets from Twitter and post them on Gettr.

When Gettr got a million sign-ups on the first official launch day, Twitter suspended the capability of people copying their tweets to Gettr.

However, Twitter's terms of service state clearly that Twitter users are the intellectual property owners of their own tweets, not Twitter.

For those who don't know, publishers often have the copyright owners assign their copyrights to the publisher and this is legal. It is not legal for a platform owner to demand this and still be considered a platform.

So, in effect, by Twitter doing what it did, it acted 100% in law like a publisher. There goes a strong argument for removing its Section 230 shield from liability.

And, from what I understand, Jason is not interested in settling anything. He wants the lawsuit.

btw - He just said his team is almost finished coding a patch so this Twitter-to-Gettr copy function is restored.

When I get a little time, I might start looking deeper into Gettr.

:)

Finally, I edit the transcript with oTranscribe, which is online and free.

That looks like a useful tool.

Quote

If I want to do any special formatting, I use a word processor like Word of Wordpad as those have goodies oTranscribe does not have.

I have found the best tool for cleaning up transcripts is Notepad++

These guys and their writing and reading aids. Like Ma and her copper pots. "What did you ever cook in this here pot, Ma?" "Shuttup you, I brain you with the pot. Have respeck."

I just came across an application that chews up Spext, spits it in a bucket, and flushes it down the CueCat hole.

It's called Descript. It works with video, audio and text and looks to be a gigantic advance for content creators -- of both video and audio. It's also (in the Pro version) creepy as all hell in a few spots.

The many uses of the tool are focused on script production (as in voice-over script, podcast/videocast script) before or after the fact ...

... talk in sentences from your rough [eg podcast] notes, correct the text, be rendered a timed script to read. And then correct fluffs and errors easily and quickly after recording.

It is thus also a great and powerful simple dictation system (like a mirror image of the Chromium text-to-speech Read Aloud). Your doorway to the First Draft.

If you write a lot, online or on paper, getting your thoughts on the screen with Descript is dead easy and two clicks from a file to share. Bif bam boom, as they say. You yap at the dictaphone, and then bam, yer secretary slaps down the document ready for signature ...

I downloaded the Mark Crispin Miller video at the link posted by Mark and stripped out all the humming and hawing using only the Descript text editor -- in under five minutes. In the CIA box below is some of the unprettified result without Hum Haw Um Uh.

The following link should show you the results side by side, text and video; the Descript text editor tweaked the video automatically. MCM False Claims (edited) - Descript

Spoiler

Okay. So today we're talking to professor mark Crispin Miller about the assault on free thought and free speech. He's been a professor of many subjects for many years. He's been teaching a course at NYU on propaganda. When did conspiracy theory become a thing? it can't always have been, a phrase that Springs to everybody's lips the way it does now.

So I, I researched its history and it was very simple. I just went to the archives of the New York times, the Washington post and time magazine, and did a search on conspiracy theory and conspiracy theorist. And I discovered that, until 1966, Conspiracy theory, had been used, you know, now and then, and in no consistent way, the phrase conspiracy theorist, never nobody ever called anybody a conspiracy theorist in print.

So what happened in 1967? Well, 1967 was the year that the CIA sent its memo 10 35 hyphen nine six. To all station chiefs worldwide, basically explaining that the problem they were faced with was the traction that certain conspiracy theorists were getting, uh, raising questions about the Warren report, what the memo told the CIA station chiefs to do was to contact their media assets and encourage them to, , attack and discredit the conspiracy theorists. I mean, the memo actually uses that phrase. The conspiracy theorists in question is people like Mark Lane and Edward J Epstein and others who have written books raising perfectly rational questions about the Warren report. The memo recommended, for example, arguing that a conspiracy of this magnitude could not have been kept secret.

Which is an argument we still hear today. So the memo went out and it's, it's no coincidence that, that marks the moment when we first start to see those phrases used, , and used increasingly as, as the decades, roll by the authorities, the press, the state, , now use the phrase openly and explicitly as, , in reference to who, who are they labeling with that?

Well, anyone who raises questions about. Prevailing propaganda narratives. It's a conspiracy theorist. They happened to be anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists with reasons varying from general skepticism to conspiracy theories, a new wave of conspiracy theories that have been shared through social media and COVID-19 is acting as an accelerant to conspiracy theories, conspiracy and evil theories.

Would it surprise anyone that Miller entertains the notion of orbital lasers zapping up the last round of Western fires in the USA?

William,

First off, Pat Flynn rocks for affiliate marketing, podcasting and related things. I wish I had time to study him more. He's on my to-do list.

On another point about Descript, I don't know if you are aware of it, but the pro version incorporates Lyrebird. Here's an article from last year from a Descript competitor (sort of, it's called Replica) that you might find interesting.

RIP Lyrebird AI—which alternatives should I try?

Quote

In 2019 Lyrebird AI was bought by Descript (a product that makes podcast editing ridiculously simple) and became the AI research division in the company.

Before joining Descript, Lyrebird’s technology allowed for the replication of human voice for use in a TTS (Text-to-Speech) interface and an API (Application Program Interface). Now their tech has been repurposed as Descript’s new Overdub feature.

To add to our bank of tangential information, you yourself discussed Lyrebird here on OL back in 2017 (see here).

Also, I commented a few times, for example the following:

On 8/22/2018 at 11:39 PM, Michael Stuart Kelly said:

The versions of Voco and Lyrebird that manage to reach the public at large are greatly degraded. Imagine the latest (and hidden) versions of these programs in the hands of master propagandists who will not go for the cheap shot.

I bet billionaires and governments are going to invest some big bucks in programs and tools that amplify and dissect audio in ways that find signs and traces of this kind of manipulation.

And here is something I found extremely interesting. There is another service where you can clone your own voice for use in text-to-speech, but it's about $999 smackeroonies: Lovo Custom Voices.

The reason I mention this is that, even though I said I was probably not going to get another TTS application, I might take advantage of Appsumo's lifetime deal with Lovo if it is still available when my next monies come in (hopefully before too long). It's $50 for 20 downloads a month, but there is unlimited TTS voice processing. This means if you have a semi-decent soundcard, you can probably record the audio directly from your computer rather than download an audio file. It takes time, but hey... This Appsumo sale has a $300 lifetime unlimited download plan, but that's too rich for me right now.

When these Appsumo lifetime deal plans are good, they are great. (Sometimes their offers include crap, too, so you have to be careful.) The reason is the program owners offer cheap lifetime plans during a small window to create buzz. Then they go to monthly payments. And the lifetime plans include all future upgrades.

I own several of these lifetime deal programs, some AI. I am currently futzing around with them and many I believe are winners: Nichesss (AI writing), Inksprout (quick AI summaries of articles for social media posting), WriterZen (AI aid for creating keyword rich and search-engine-friendly content), Audit (AI SEO checks for blogs), Squirrly SEO (AI SEO aid for creating keyword rich and search-engine-friendly blogs), CrawlQ  (AI SEO aid for creating keyword rich and search-engine-friendly blogs, but extremely comprehensive for few blogs), SEOBlazer (instant SEO checks of any website to see what they are doing, and includes 54 cloud-based SEO tools), SimilarMail (gazillions of searchable high-performing email campaigns to use as models for autoresponder content), PromoRepublic (social media syndication), Stencil (online graphics program similar to Canva), Webinar Ninja (webinars without big tech surveillance) and Grum (pre-scheduling instagram posts.

Also, I got from Appsumo some desktop programs with lifetime updates: Streamr (video transcripts--any video, translations and subtitling), LeadScrape (scraping leads for business from the web), Pinflux (Pinterest marketing and automation).

These are not all, but they are the ones I like best. Some of them are no longer available as lifetime deals. Also, on the downside, sometimes the app in a lifetime deal (LTD) will close down after a while and that's a bummer. That happened with me with TheRightMargin and Layers (a Wordpress theme). But I don't mind since that's the price I pay for being able to pick the good ones.

And don't forget that all these are just Appsumo programs.

It occurs to me that this sounds like a commercial for Appsumo :) . I'm not an affiliate there (yet). I just wanted to get an overview of my Appsumo programs at a place I can later copy/paste.

If anyone wants to know why I am so late in getting to my writing blog (and other blogs like cryptocurrency) and upgrading OL to a brand new and exciting existence, learning all this stuff is the main reason.

Sometimes I feel like a child in a candy shop.

:)

Incidentally, if you want to muck around with AI writing, Nichesss is the best bang for the buck. One time fee ($59) and unlimited writing. However, a new LTD kid on the block called Wordhero is going for $49 and my gut tells me this is not only going to be one of the good ones, it's going to be great after improvements. Also, unlimited writing is part of the deal for now. I intend to get it when my monies come.

I really should sign up as affiliate to Appsumo. I even like writing this promotional crap.

:)

William,

If you are interested, here is one of those lifetime deals that might interest you. Pictory does the same stuff as Descript, except you pay once and you are done (for now).

e8f065b913f42c613ebdb973b8db0fa8.jpg
APPSUMO.COM

Create short social videos from long-form content in just minutes with a smart AI solution

This is not an affiliate link, although I'm fugglebuzzed about why I resist putting affiliate links for stuff like this here on OL.

Anywho, the el cheapo plan is $59. I got the Tier 2 plan ($119). I really didn't have the extra cash lying around to spend, but this is one of those times a sacrifice is worth it.

A little backstory fun. Market Samurai is one of the gold standards in keyword research tools for mid-level people. It later branched out into other areas, including video. It produced a product with the concepts behind Descript and Pictory called Content Samurai. This is years ago. Later, it renamed the program Vidnami and it went for a pretty penny on a monthly plan.

GoDaddy recently bought Vidnami and essentially kicked all Vidnami users out (starting at the end of August). This prompted other tools to appear to fill the void. I'm not sure if Direct was motivated by this, but Pictory sure was.

There's even a spammer's delight tool that is quite cheap that the owners adapted to get Vidnami's customers. It's called Yive.

Here's the lifetime deal link (not an affiliate link again... when am I gonna learn? :) ):

Nobody needs more than the basic option for $77, which comes with a limit of 3,000 videos a month. That is, unless you need to make more than 3,000 videos a month.

(I told you this one was for spammers. :) They normally take the same video and "spin" it, meaning changing around the slides and text, or even inserting new material in an automated way, then blasting out 300 or 400 copies of, essentially, the same damn thing.)

Yive is not as elaborate as Pictory, like it doesn't allow you to get rid of the uh's and ah's in the video by correcting the text, and it's interface is not that friendly.

But it does automatically produce videos from text with a mountain of b-roll and images and music and voices. And you can edit them to swap out things to your heart's content.

I don't know how long either LTD will last. But if you are mucking around with Direct, I believe these are great alternatives that will not come with monthly fees so long as these promotions last. And it looks like both companies are solid.

William,

This guy thinks Descript is much superior, but the LTD for Pictory is a good investment if they improve some of the services. I actually bought it for that reason. No guarantees, but it looks good.

You also get Shutterstock b-roll assets with Pictory, which is quite a savings, too.

Taking down Harvey Weinstein in the MeToo ferver is an example of where their closed ranks busted wide open...

Now that we know what happened in 2020, and considering what is likely to happen in the not-so-distant future, there is something else to consider.

I think Jonathan was dead center on target when he said this in 2018:

On 5/24/2018 at 10:16 AM, Jonathan said:

What do you think of women who look at men as a mealticket to be manipulated with their looks, their sexual favors, or their loyalty? Have you seen Harvey Weinstein’s wife? Do you know who she is, what her background is? By what standards do you think that Harvey chose her as a partner? By what standards did she choose him?

We could ask the same damn questions of the justice system.

And, over time, as the pressures of checks and balances nudge flawed judicial decisions toward compliance with justice in the proper sense of the term, there are situations where we end up getting things like this beauty (which is "what is likely to happen in the not-so-distant future").

Here’s Why Justice May Demand That Harvey Weinstein Goes Free

0d24430d325e6f8d57ac44eebe40434d
NEWS.YAHOO.COM

JOHANNES EISELENew York Appellate judges grilled the District Attorney prosecuting Harvey Weinstein so intently this week that it appears they are poised to overturn his criminal conviction.The...

Granted, this acts and sounds like something to soften the woke people up for the day when Weinstein goes free. There's that. The propagandists will do their propagandizing. But I believe there is a solid foundation underneath, so the job the propagandists have is a lot easier than it sounds from this article. And if the article rings funny to your ear, I believe that's why.

So what does this have to do with the 2020 election?

The same damn mentality by the bad guys was in charge.

Weinstein was crucified by the MeToo movement. Whether he was a pig or not is not the issue. The issue is that nobody cared back then about solid evidence aligned with the laws. They did a witch trial on him and burned him to the stake over hysteria. The legal system was merely a stage for that play to be displayed to the public, not a real entity to rule on and dispense justice.

I have not read the case, but I suspect Weinstein's legal crucifixion was flawed up the giggy in so many ways, there is no saving the prosecution. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

And I believe it was flawed on purpose. For the 2020 election, the Dems needed to show their base they were serious about woke concerns, starting with the MeToo people. They needed the veneer of morality to keep people voting for them. So they took a few prominent Dems down for show.

The thing about Harvey is that he is connected at the hip with the Clinton machine, and I believe the Clintons themselves were pissed off he got crucified. (Dem infighting.) This situation was complicated and critical, so the Clintons let Weinstein take one for the team just to help get Trump defeated. But being the Clintons, I have little doubt they helped put poison pills in his court cases. And it wasn't hard because of all the yelling back then.

So I expect to see Harvey once again making movies with superstars before too long. And there will be a contrition story for show that means jackshit to go along with it as things settle down.

The moral of this story is that justice has to be blind to work. The truth is, justice was partisan when they went after Weinstein. So as time goes on, it looks like Weinstein will walk.

The good news is that the mentality that put the poison pills in the Weinstein affair is the same mentality that orchestrated the massive cheating that went on in the 2020 election.

And what is that mentality? That the justice system is nothing but a tool to get and keep power. It is not a system for ensuring equal justice for all under the law.

But while that mentality loves the checks and balances for getting Harvey out, they are not so happy that checks and balances are at work with the phony 2020 election results. Like it or not, the blackmailers and corrupters could not get to ALL the judges. So checks and balances are working, getting the cracks open and gradually letting the sunlight in. And there are so many already, this thing is going to bust wide open and a Day of Reckoning will arrive. Nay. Scratch that. An Era of Reckoning will arrive.

My heart, mind and soul are behind the legal principles that allow the judicial system to correct itself in this manner, whether the legally injured party is Weinstein or Trump. Whether bad or good.

So what to do about Weinstein since, on another point, he actually is a pig at abusing his power for sex? If I were the woke people, I would demand he be investigated correctly and try to get some real goddam evidence. Stuff that the courts cannot contest is evidence. And I would make sure the kinds of questions Jonathan asked above are part of the process. Objectivity demands it.

Look where prosecuting him incorrectly is leading.

Or, hell... let's get real. The woke people can also do what I think they will do. I think they will follow the predator class's propaganda machine and forget all about it after Weinstein starts making movies again.

:)

Their shortened attention span and penchant for herd behavior doesn't allow practically any of them to think in principles or act like a moral individual standing against a crowd.

Update via email from Wendy Rogers re: the PA election results, with "receipts" showing that the PA results were "unlawfully certified", and where the Democrats obstructed the audit by refusing court orders to allow Republicans to witness the audit (an especially important fact for those who continue to smear those contesting the results as "emotional" conspiracy-theorists):

So much coming out now- problems in Wisconsin, problems in Pima County AZ, and now- problems revealed in Pennsylvania!

You recall PA? When President Trump was up over 600,000 on election night?

Where Philly excluded observers, even when ordered to allow them by the U.S. Supreme Court?

Now we have receipts.

According to Liz Harrington:

In Philadelphia County:

792 out of 1,703 precincts had more votes than voters

These precincts account for 346,484 votes for President

It is against the law to certify these results without an investigation, which has not been conducted

It is literally illegal to certify an election in Pennsylvania if the books don't match. And the quantity of precincts where the impossible took place, make it clear: PA should never have been certified.

Philly and Pittsburgh were problems, and everyone knew it, in 2020. And lo and behold, the numbers don't match up!

PA law provides for the election not to be certified. We should decertify!

Following up on Michael and I talking about transcribing software for getting the words out of a video or audio and into an easily-readable form.

Descript is fine and fast, but is it simple?  Is it as stripped down as, say, the Google suite of so-called cloud apps?

No, but I discovered in passing that it is possible to use Google Docs to 'dictate' directly into a text document -- with the sound output from video or audio sources playing.

What might be making it work is that I use a virtual sound-mixer called "Voicemeeter," which incorporates any "desktop sound" -- audio files, podcasts, videos playing -- with any microphone input, and mixes it into a single audio output stream.

In Edge, in Google Docs, with Voicemeeter, when I click Voice typing and then give permission to use the microphone ... the sound output from video or audio is immediately transcribed ...

Here's the link to the raw transcript taken of the Franswah Studios Voicemeeter how-to video linked above.

This portion of the video is for you. If at any point in this video you get confused or you have trouble understanding something that's being explained, feel free to hop in my discord server or gilded server for...

-- I don't know that this will work in alternative browsers, without using Voicemeeter. I'll try it in Brave and Vivaldi.

At the very least this is a way to dictate to text (already instantiated in Google Chrome).
