Peter
Wow. Just re-listened to “Baker Street” for the first time in years, by Gerry Rafferty from 1978. His father was technically deaf but still taught him Irish “rebel” songs. Now the same 70’s oldie station on Mediacom is playing “Old Time Rock And Roll” by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band and it is rousing.

Peter
I think I will relisten to Baker Street now but here are some good solos in the middle of songs that are worth listening to again and/or sung by high pitched voices? “Crying in the Rain” by the Everly Brothers. “Victoria” by The Kinks. “America” by Simon and Garfunkel. “The talk on the bus” section is so great. “They’ve all come to look for America.” “Limelight” by Rush. Wow. That bass guitar! “Ordinary World” by Duran Duran may be my current favorite.
Peter
The lyrics are bit quirky but with the music and singing this is a very sad song. Peter She's Leaving Home by The Beatles Wednesday morning at five o'clock As the day begins Silently closing her bedroom door Leaving the note that she hoped would say more She goes down the stairs to the kitchen Clutching her handkerchief Quietly turning the backdoor key Stepping outside, she is free She,... (we gave her most of our lives) Is leaving (sacrificed most of our lives) Home (we gave her everything money could buy) Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown Picks up the letter that's lying there Standing alone at the top of the stairs She breaks down and cries to her husband Daddy, our baby's gone. Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly? How could she do this to me? She (we never thought of ourselves) Is leaving (never a thought for ourselves) Home (we struggled hard all our lives to get by) She's leaving home, after living alone, for so many years Friday morning, at nine o'clock She is far away Waiting to keep the appointment she made Greeting a man from the Motortrade She (what did we do that was wrong) Is Having (we didn't know it was wrong) Fun (fun is the one thing that money can't buy) Something inside, that was always denied, For so many years,. Michael Stuart Kelly
Recently I've been getting into the poetic elements in the songs of Mickey Newbury. His lyrics are a cut way above the normal, even in a country song about a woman leaving him. And, yes, this is a good song for crying. I've had a woman just like he described. And a few friendships. Just like the dawn, my heart is silently breaking... It's her sorrow, it's not a man... I know she tried... It's not her heart. Lord, it's her mind... Just beautiful and poignant as all get out... Peter
One More Night Phil Collins One more night, one more night I've been trying, oh so long to let you know Let you know how I feel And if I stumble, if I fall, just help me back So I can make you see Please give me one more night Give me one more night One more night 'Cause I can't wait forever Give me just one more night Ooh, just one more night Oh, one more night 'Cause I can't wait forever I've been sitting here so long, wasting time Just staring at the phone And I was wondering should I call you Then I thought, maybe you're not alone Please give me one more night Give me just one more night Oh, one more night 'Cause I can't wait forever . . . . Peter
I see I may be exceeded the, ‘oh not another one from him’ range but here is a very sad song. “All alone am I” by Brenda Lee. All alone am I ever since your goodbyeAll alone with just the beat of my heartPeople all around but I don't hear a soundJust the lonely beating of my heart . . . . Peter Eddy Arnold.Make the world go awayAnd get it off my shouldersSay the things you used to sayAnd make the world go awayDo you remember when you loved meBefore the world took me astray? If you do, then forgive meAnd make the world go away . . . Michael Stuart Kelly
Karen Carpenter is never for tears, but man, does she tear at wistfulness. How about these line for O-Land romances? "I know your image of me is what I hope to be." and "There's no one more important to me, darling can't you please see through me?" It's like looking behind the curtain at what life could and should be, but people keep getting in their own way. And that makes me wistful... Peter
We all may think of The Bee Gee’s as rousing disco performers but surprisingly some of their songs are sad and poignant. “I’ve Got to Get a Message to You.” “Words.” “Too Much Heaven.” “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” and my favorite sad song of theirs’ is “I Started a Joke.” I’m OK. I’m OK. I’m stayin’ alive and I guess I should be dancing during the nights on Broadway because I love somebody who is more than a woman, and she gives me night fever, with all her jive talkin’ . . . oh and she’s from Massachusetts. Michael Stuart Kelly
Here's a song for crying in a metaphysical and political sense. Based on this song alone, Oliver Anthony strikes me as kind of like a Pete Seeger of the MAGA world. Seeger was mostly upbeat ("If I Had a Hammer" and so on), whereas Anthony's song is a lament. How are they similar? Theme is a big part.. Social rules and metaphysics and underneath seeking real justice for all of us, not just the few. I have no doubt this thing is going to resonate widely. It got to me, too. The danger will be if it influences a lot of people in a French Revolution way: to hate the rich for being rich (then chop off their heads ), not just hate those rich who are corrupt and suckass. But that's easy to cure. Just read some Ayn Rand. Enjoy... I sure did... Michael

Michael Stuart Kelly
I'm watching the rocket-blast-off trajectory of this song with the eyes of a songwriter and producer. I see a song for the ages. The word that comes to mind to connect this brand new song with the universal ancient culture we all carry in our hearts is "lamentations." Anyway, here is something I came across that is a perfect example of people who try to vest wisdom without really observing what they talk about. Bah... Cerno. What's wrong with you? Go should all over sheep, dude. Those two X comments come from a "words" mentality, not a "deeds" mentality. Gotcha bullshit. And the only operating emotion I can detect is vanity. I love Cerno, but I said to myself, there he goes again, letting off a loud juicy fart at the dinner table. Normally, I give up on the world about 300 times a day, especially when I look at social media. So I was starting to give up on the world for the 17th time this morning, I caught this thing below. And I thought, "YES!" Finally someone else saw it. Not just gushed about the song. They saw it. I liked this so much I wrote on X, which I hardly ever do. After I wrote that, I came across the following reaction video from a 23 year old black man. This guy gets it down to the bones in his feet. Ahhh... Relief... No need to give up on the world just yet. Frankly, the success of this song and that reaction video should scare the shit out of the Predator Class right now. If you want to see the full reaction video, it's on YouTube. Both of these guys are my people. Michael

Michael Oliver Anthony has a new song for crying (and it's a good one ). I Want To Go Home Quote Lyrics to “I Want To Go Home” by Oliver Anthony Well, if it weren’t for my old dogs and the good Lord They’d have me strung up in the psych ward ‘Cause every day livin’ in this new world is one too many days to me Son, we’re on the brink of the next world war And I don’t think nobody’s prayin’ no more And I ain’t saying I know it for sure I’m just down on my knees Beggin’, Lord, take me home I wanna go home I don’t know which road to go it’s’ been so long I just know I didn’t used to wake up feelin’ this way Cussin’ myself every damn day It’s always some kind of bill to pay People just doing what the rich men say I wanna go home Now four generations farming the ground Grandson sells it to a man out of town Two weeks later trees go down only got concrete going around I wanna go home I wanna go home I don’t know which road to go its’ been so long I just know I didn’t used to wake up feelin’ this way Cussin’ myself every damn day People have really gone and lost their way They all just do what the TV say I wanna go home Well, if it weren’t for my old dogs and the good Lord They’d have me strung up in the psych ward Michael
Michael Stuart Kelly
This had to start happening. Normal people are sick of the racism grift. The title of this thread is "Best Songs for Crying." I always thought the well-funded racism agenda crap would have to ended by more hostility. I never dreamed it would end with a tear. But that looks like where this is headed. But some monied people will not stop with hostility (and war). So wait until the crony garbage Predator Class people start seeing torches and pitchforks show up at their door--torches and pitchforks carried by good people of all races and creeds. Let their tears fall next. Michael

Michael Stuart Kelly
Peter, This song is not so much for crying, but instead, when crying is being held back. Lee Ann Womack. "A Little Past Little Rock." Here are the words: Quote I had to leave my life in Dallas That town will always be you In every crowd, on every corner, Every face I'd see you So with nothing more than a tank of gas I drove away without looking back And I guess that's how I got where I am Going anywhere as fast as I can Now I'm a little past Little Rock Further down the line Too soon to know what's up ahead Too late to change my mind I've got to keep my heart out of this And both hands on the wheel I'm learning more with every mile Just how leaving feels It's a lonely stretch of blacktop Out into the blue Don't know where I'll go Or what I'll do I'm a little past Little Rock, But a long way from over you These headlights on the highway Disappear into the dark And if I could have it my way I'd go back to where you are Oh, but I can't turn this thing around And nothing short of breaking down Is gonna get me off this road I'm on But I'm still a far cry from gone But I'm a little past Little Rock Further down the line Too soon to know what's up ahead Too late to change my mind I've got to keep my heart out of this And both hands on the wheel I'm learning more with every mile Just how leaving feels It's a lonely stretch of blacktop Out into the blue Don't know where I'll go Or what I'll do I'm a little past Little Rock, But a long way from over you I'm a little past Little Rock But a long way from over you There are four things I love about this song. 1. It is one of the most perfect pop songs I know that deals with facing loss and doing something about it. 2. The chorus harmonies and their mix blew me away when I first heard them and they still do. (I'm a sucker for 9ths whispering in the background.) 3. This song does not have to be about a man and a woman (or any relationship). It can be a metaphor about leaving something you love behind because it's not good for you. Getting unstuck. And you hurt. You still leave, but it's hard. Punishing. Grueling, Yet you do it. 4. I have a personal story with this song. Back in my drug days in Brazil, I once passed out on a sofa all by myself. Back then I sometimes stayed up days and days without sleep using coke and/or crack. And then I would pass out. Usually I chose when to go to bed. In this case, I just fell into unconsciousness. Blacked out. I had left the TV on and, by chance, it was on the country music channel. (God knows, I would not have done that back then if I had not been using drugs. ) But in the darkness of non-me, from a long distance away, I heard those harmonies in the chorus. Man, were they nice. They kept nudging my brain. Then they slowly brought me back to awareness as I tried to figure out what was happening. As I listened to the song, I opened my eyes and saw the video in front of me. A tremor went through me. I had been out about five hours and, at that moment, I knew I could have died this time around. Wow... And the song kept playing. That's a memory I never forgot. I never will. This as one of those odd connections in life. This song is a perfect fit to me leaving drugs behind. Maybe some other stuff, too. Shrugging... Drug-wise, though, it not only brought me back to reality during a potential overdose, it metaphorically depicts the reality I lived back then when I got fed up and went off and away from drugs. Like I said, it's not exactly for crying. But, for me, it's damn close... Michael EDIT: Just for the record, the small memoir happened about 25 years ago. Peter
Wistful and sad in a way. The harmonies are terrific! “Dreamboat Annie” by Heart. Heading out this morning into the sun Riding on the diamond waves, little darling one Warm wind caress her Her lover it seems Oh, Annie Dreamboat Annie, ship of dreams Oh, Annie Dreamboat Annie, little ship of dreams Going down the city sidewalk, alone in the crowd No one knows the lonely one whose head's in the clouds Sad faces painted over with those magazine smiles Heading out to somewhere Won't be back for a while (for a while) Won't be back for a while (for a while) Won't be back (for a while) Won't be back Songwriters: Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson.
