  1. Wow, I don't know why but for some reason id like to do some research on this individual. I honestly forgot about him, but I enjoy history and this is something I can research on the side.
  2. Agreed, and there's city style or unban style living. Wooded or beach style as well.
  3. Nebraska is considered the "Mid West" however, the beleifs and way of living are very much the same. Right below is where it is considered "The South" from Texas to the Carolinas, Florida to Tennessee. Some say Kentucky. Theres a lot of individuals in Kentucky that considers themselves to be. This logic applies to the Mid West. The way of living is very similar. Slow paced, good mannered, promoting invidualsim and industry. Their main industry is farming, mining, etc etc. If it interest you, Wikipedia totally flames the region with the typical slander that occurs from most educational outlet. But statistics usually dont lie. Its not for everyone. But for many, its a Capitalist and "self reliant" type atmosphere. Theres bad areas like any region and the cities within the regions. But most is spread open and typically decent people around. Anyway Wkipedia did get this part correct. As defined by the United States Census Bureau, the Southern region of the United States includes sixteen states. As of 2010, an estimated 114,555,744 people, or thirty-seven percent of all U.S. residents, lived in the South, the nation's most populous region. The Census Bureau defined three smaller units, or divisions: The South Atlantic States: Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and DelawareThe East South Central States: Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and TennesseeThe West South Central States: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.Other terms related to the South include: The Old South: can mean either the slave states that existed in 1776 (Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, or all the slave states before 1860 (which included the newer states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas.).The New South: usually including the South Atlantic States. The Solid South: region controlled by the Democratic Party from 1877 to 1964. Includes at least all the 11 former Confederate StatesSouthern Appalachia: mainly refers to areas situated in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, namely Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee, Western North Carolina, Western Maryland, West Virginia, Southwest Virginia, North Georgia, and Northwestern South CarolinaSoutheastern United States: usually including the Carolinas, the Virginias, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and at times Maryland and Delaware The Deep South: various definitions, usually including Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina. Occasionally, parts of adjoining states are included (sections of East Texas, delta areas of Arkansas and Tennessee, and parts of Florida such as the Panhandle and the north-central part of the state). The Gulf South: various definitions, usually including Gulf coasts of Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama. The Upper South: Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, North Carolina, and occasionally Missouri and DelawareDixie: various definitions, but most commonly associated with the 11 states of the Old Confederacy. The Mid-South: Various definitions, including that of the Census Bureau of the East and West South Central United States;in another informal definition, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and sometimes adjoining areas of other states.Border South: Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware were states on the outer rim of the Confederacy that did not secede from the United States, but did have significant numbers of residents who joined the Confederate armed forces. Kentucky and Missouri had Confederate governments in exile and were represented in the Confederate Congress and by the Confederate battle flag. West Virginia formed in 1863 after the western region broke away from Virginia, though support for the Confederacy and the Union in the new state was about evenly divided. The way i look at it. Anyone can claim to be a Southern. Its not a direction, but a "way of life". Come sometime, you will always be treated good.
  4. Hard to believe one of the reasons the revolutionary war was fought was due to raising taxes. Now its a government yearly tradition.
  5. Let me add to this a quote from someone all of you know, "sell everything you have, and move to the South" - Glenn Beck
  6. Fellow member Selene passed this on to me, in which I would like to make a post of it. http://www.ringoffireradio.com/2013/05/03/papantonio-southern-states-become-ayn-rand-paradise-video/ There is so much wrong with the information in this video. Let me start by saying, "yes, Rand would be please with the Southern states" the region promotes Individualism, Capitalism, private property, and low taxes. Let me start by explaining one thing. The South's cost of living is very low. Unlike what the video says this does not mean its full of poverty. Around 50K a year a family can live very well. Very well as in a decent 3000 sqft house. few acres of land, couple cars, and all the toys a man needs like motorcycles, 5.0 Mustang etc etc. The average individual income is 36K, so the average married couple in the South live well. This Mike Papantino apparently does not know this. Contrary to what he says in the video the region is booming. All except Mississippi, its having a tough time. Due to the south being very capitalistic let me give statistics of my home state and some others to show "Rands ideas" are working. Unemployment: Alabama: 6.9% 2 years ago before lord Obama cut out a lot of the drilling it was 3.3%, Florida: 7.2 Georgia: 8.2 Texas: 6.4 Louisiana: 6.5 Keep in mind this percentage is all AFTER the BP oil spill and the Gulf Coast Natural gas and oil drilling was cut out by this Administration. Before that happened all southern states was doing well and also keep in mind the Gulf Coast is constantly bombed with hurricanes Every year. Within the last decade the following companies have made Alabama their home to some plants: Austals ThyssenKrupp Hyundai Mitsubishi Airbus Northrop Grumman Outokumpo Evoniks DPS Midstream Chevron Alabama also has Shell, Exxon, and yellowhammer plants. How did this dumb hick state as they say accomplish this? by offering tax breaks and low land cost. Welcome to the business f Capitalism. Alabama set its goals on business and industry. Some cities such as Mobile do try for a little tourist attraction. I disagree with this and say leave it to Gulf shores to promote the beaches. We have become a industrious state, STICK WITH IT! Its working. Louisiana and Texas is also booming with their industrial fields. If we can hurry and get a Administration in power that will let us drill for Natural Gas and oil we would have a very small percentage of unemployment across the south. Tax Rate: Tenn is the 3rd lowest state tax in the nation Alabama is 5th in the nation Texas is 8th S. Carolina is 2nd etc Far as poverty, because the cost of living is so low in the south. You don't have to make to much cash to live comfortably. The south has always promoted Capitalism. If you took religion out of the region it would be considered a Libertarian region. It is a Conservative and Libertarian region as of now. However, the area is becoming more open minded as the years past. Libertarianism is growing every year. I ask you to look at which way Southern states vote in every election. One thing southerners can say, "hey, don't blame us, we voted for the other guy". The reason I made this post is I see everyday the Media and other sources flame the south. I was in Boston and in a bar the guy couldn't believe I had shoes on. Should of seen his face when I told him I lived in a city bigger than Boston and yes im from Alabama. If you see something about the south on the news. They always pick the dude in a wife beater with no teeth. This is not the case. Sorry for boring you but wanted fellow Objectivist to know the truth. The South promotes Capitalism. Its economy after natural disasters and the United States is drowning itself in bankruptcy still stands and continue to grow even with the anti-drilling banns are in place. So Ayn Rands paradise is working. We just need the government to leave us alone and let us handle our industries and allow us to drill and we will prove Capitalism works and the benefit of the oil industries will help the entire nation. Emanuel
  7. Ahh yes, you live in another industrious Southern state as well. A good Chevron refinery just south of you.
  8. I have won several debates concerning how industrial companies and corporations actually help the environment. They help more than the governmental programs such as the EPA ever could. I wanted to share a few points. One fact I would like to point out. Chevron in Pascagoula Ms sits on 3000 acres. However, they donate 2/3rds or approx. 2000 acres to wetlands and wildlife. Resources: http://pascagoula.chevron.com/home/environmentandsafety/environment/protectingwetlandsandforestlands.aspx http://pascagoula.chevron.com/home/abouttherefinery.aspx In the state of Alabama we have a program called The Forever Wild program. This program has acquired 222,000 acres of wildlife for conservation for public use. Camping , hunting, fishing, etc etc. Funding for the Forever Wild Land Trust is generated by the interest earned from natural gas royalties. The FWLT receives 10 percent of the distributed interest, capped at $15 million for any given year. YES! The land is conserved by Natural Gas oil rigs in the Gulf. Resources: http://alabamaforeverwild.com/index.php/about-us/how-we-are-funded The "Liberals" of the area passed around a petition to dismantle the rigs in the Gulf due to environmental concerns. (The rigs not being used due to Obamas anti-drilling frame of mind) However, I myself intervened on the petitions Facebook page. My talking points followed: http://www.joincca.org/issues/5 Even though I raised these FACTS that the rigs are a huge habitat for Gulf Cost species including the popular Coast fish, Red Snapper. Which is a popular fish and helps Mobile be known, they still have scrapped rigs not being used because of them being on federal land (or sea) this could be and WILL BE disastrous to the species. From: http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2013/feb/13/palazzo-oil-rigs-are-critical-habitat/ I quote "The Interior Department announced in late 2010, months after the 2010 BP oil spill, that oil and gas companies would be required to set permanent plugs in 3,500 non-producing Gulf wells and also be required to dismantle some 650 wells no longer in use". Again, keep in mind most of these are due to the current administrations anti-drilling policies. Also, you can find a full diagram and model of how this helps the habitat at the sea lab at Dauphin Island. Which is the result of the University of South Alabama. I have more points in defending most Industrial companies but these are great examples. I love the area in which I live. I am concerned about how the program will destroy the tourist sporting attraction, commercial fishermen, and the economy. Gulf Coast seafood is popular in our nation. In the end I will continue my debate and battle for this topics. Honestly thought of starting a Blog as well. (including economics and Objectivism) Emanuel
  9. I'm surprised he is actually showing his face around again.
  10. It seems Christianity and other religions are becoming modernized or should I say more laxed to become more appealing. What use to get you damned now can be forgiven for. Also, i am always amazed at how little Christians know of their own religion and its history.
  11. Has anyone seen this film? What is your thoughts? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0760188/
  12. I actually enjoyed this movie. Even watched it a second time. "A capitalist Oil man". Started broke and buit his way to wealth. Also, i've never seen a preacher beat in the head with a bowling pin before this movie.
  13. Yes very good and good action. i concur on the recommendation.
  14. This was actually a very action packed movie. With a few pop in stars.
  15. I keep hearing people tell me this. Ive been watching The Walking Dead, so next on the list will be this.
  16. I personally like a few Japanese Anime movies "Ninja Scrolls" and a few Tim Burton films. But Disney I usually watch with my kids. Out of them I liked Flushed Away, Nemo, and Monsters Inc. Wreck it Ralf was pretty cool too.
  17. Ill make sure to get the DVD 2 disc set. I would like to see it in its full 4 hours if possible. Plus the documentary part would be neat to see.
  18. He probably thinks we don't need to keep score. Everyone gets a participation award. No one better, smarter, creative than the other. We are all equal. These socialist type remarks in politics and the media always gives me a headache. But hey a Alabama Crimson Tide fan here, and an Objectivist. Don't think Rand is destroying football Campos. How did he even come to that conclusion is beyond me.
  19. Horrible typo on the title "late intro"
  20. Sorry for the late intro. Names Emanuel and I am from Alabama. A Good 'ol Southern boy. One of the rare Objectivist "country boys", for I haven't met many, but of course sharing my knowledge about the philosophy in my area and region. Married with 3 kids. In school for Process Engineering (Petroleum and Chemical mostly) I've studied religion, philosophy, and Occults pretty much all my life. Its always been a subject of interest. My religion and occult studies lead me to become an Atheist. Through research on religion and Atheism I discovered a lady by the name of Ayn Rand, read The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and have been studying Objectivism ever since. (around 4 to 5 years) I lurked around the forums about Objectivism and liked the tone here on OL so finally became a registered member. Looking to learn, improve knowledge and make new acquaintances. I've noticed that Objectivist are very intelligent people and enjoy speaking with them. (most anyway ).
  21. Well, I am from the South. Born and raised. We are known for our cooking so thought I would throw a few REAL Southern recipes on the forum. Enjoy and more to come. NOTE: I put How to make Roux on here. You can also Google it for different perspectives. You can also buy a jar of Roux in most grocery stores to make it simple. Roux The fat used in roux may be butter, shortening, lard, oil, or even bacon drippings. Combine fat with an equal amount of flour ; 1/2 cup of each will make a good amount and any excess can be stored in the refrigerator. (Many cookbooks call for a little more fat than flour - 2/3 cup oil to 1/2 cup flour is a common ratio.) Melt the fat in a black skillet over low heat. When warm and fluid, sprinkle the flour in a little at a time, stirring. Stir constantly until brown (this may take 20 to 30 minutes) ; immediately remove from heat or add ingredients your recipe calls for. If it burns even slightly, throw it out and start over again. Ingredients: 1/4 cup roux, see recipes below2 large onions, chopped3 cups okra, chopped2 tablespoons oil1 can (14.5 ounces) stewed tomatoes3 cloves garlic, minced2 quarts watersaltblack peppercayenne pepper1/2 cup parsley, finely chopped6 to 8 green onions, finely chopped2 pounds shrimp1 cup oysters1 cup crab meatcrab clawshot cooked rice Preparation:Add shrimp to roux and cook for a few minutes. Set aside. Cook okra and onions in hot oil. Add tomatoes and garlic when okra is almost done. Cook a few minutes longer, then add water, salt and pepper. Combine shrimp and roux mixture with okra; simmer about 10 minutes. Add oysters, crab meat, and crab claws; simmer for 15 minutes. Add parsley and green onions and simmer another 15 to 20 minutes. Serve with hot cooked rice.
  22. Even if we made it that long, the sun will dwarf, so unless we are planet travelers we nor the Earth will exist if the sun dwarfing theory is true. Species throughout time usually go extinct. This reminds me of the EPA stopping progress over a Salamander or other endangered animal that is almost extinct. Figure if the species is that rare they would place it in a zoo to conserve it. I would think they would be better taken care of, and not hinder progress. Interesting topic we have started though.
  23. I find myself reading this daily. Sorry for the long post but to me its great and inspiring writing. Resources: from: http://www.noblesoul.com/orc/texts/anthem/complete.html XII. 12.1 It was when I read the first of the books I found in my house that I saw the word "I." And when I understood this word, the book fell from my hands, and I wept, I who had never known tears. I wept in deliverance and in pity for all mankind. 12.2 I understood the blessed thing which I had called my curse. I understood why the best in me had been my sins and my transgressions; and why I had never felt guilt in my sins. I understood that centuries of chains and lashes will not kill the spirit of man nor the sense of truth within him. 12.3 I read many books for many days. Then I called the Golden One, and I told her what I had read and what I had learned. She looked at me and the first words she spoke were: 12.4 "I love you." 12.5 Then I said: 12.6 "My dearest one, it is not proper for men to be without names. There was a time when each man had a name of his own to distinguish him from all other men. So let us choose our names. I have read of a man who lived many thousands of years ago, and of all the names in these books, his is the one I wish to bear. He took the light of the gods and he brought it to men, and he taught men to be gods. And he suffered for his deed as all bearers of light must suffer. His name was Prometheus." 12.7 "It shall be your name," said the Golden One. 12.8 "And I have read of a goddess," I said, "who was the mother of the earth and of all the gods. Her name was Gaea. Let this be your name, my Golden One, for you are to be the mother of a new kind of gods." 12.9 "It shall be my name," said the Golden One. 12.10 Now I look ahead. My future is clear before me. The Saint of the pyre had seen the future when he chose me as his heir, as the heir of all the saints and all the martyrs who came before him and who died for the same cause, for the same word, no matter what name they gave to their cause and their truth. 12.11 I shall live here, in my own house. I shall take my food from the earth by the toil of my own hands. I shall learn many secrets from my books. Through the years ahead, I shall rebuild the achievements of the past, and open the way to carry them further, the achievements which are open to me, but closed forever to my brothers, for their minds are shackled to the weakest and dullest ones among them. 12.12 I have learned that my power of the sky was known to men long ago; they called it Electricity. It was the power that moved their greatest inventions. It lit this house with light which came from those globes of glass on the walls. I have found the engine which produced this light. I shall learn how to repair it and how to make it work again. I shall learn how to use the wires which carry this power. Then I shall build a barrier of wires around my home, and across the paths which lead to my home; a barrier light as a cobweb, more impassable than a wall of granite; a barrier my brothers will never be able to cross. For they have nothing to fight me with, save the brute force of their numbers. I have my mind. 12.13[*] Then here, on this mountaintop, with the world below me and nothing above me but the sun, I shall live my own truth. Gaea is pregnant with my child. Our son will be raised as a man. He will be taught to say "I" and to bear the pride of it. He will be taught to walk straight and on his own feet. He will be taught reverence for his own spirit. 12.14 When I shall have read all the books and learned my new way, when my home will be ready and my earth tilled, I shall steal one day, for the last time, into the cursed City of my birth. I shall call to me my friend who has no name save International 4-8818, and all those like him, Fraternity 2-5503, who cries without reason, and Solidarity 9-6347 who calls for help in the night, and a few others. I shall call to me all the men and the women whose spirit has not been killed within them and who suffer under the yoke of their brothers. They will follow me and I shall lead them to my fortress. And here, in this uncharted wilderness, I and they, my chosen friends, my fellow-builders, shall write the first chapter in the new history of man. 12.15 These are the things before me. And as I stand here at the door of glory, I look behind me for the last time. I look upon the history of men, which I have learned from the books, and I wonder. It was a long story, and the spirit which moved it was the spirit of man's freedom. But what is freedom? Freedom from what? There is nothing to take a man's freedom away from him, save other men. To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is freedom. That and nothing else. 12.16 At first, man was enslaved by the gods. But he broke their chains. Then he was enslaved by the kings. But he broke their chains. He was enslaved by his birth, by his kin, by his race. But he broke their chains. He declared to all his brothers that a man has rights which neither god nor king nor other men can take away from him, no matter what their number, for his is the right of man, and there is no right on earth above this right. And he stood on the threshold of the freedom for which the blood of the centuries behind him had been spilled. 12.17[*] But then he gave up all he had won, and fell lower than his savage beginning. 12.18 What brought it to pass? What disaster took their reason away from men? What whip lashed them to their knees in shame and submission? The worship of the word "We." 12.19 When men accepted that worship, the structure of centuries collapsed about them, the structure whose every beam had come from the thought of some one man, each in his day down the ages, from the depth of some one spirit, such spirit as existed but for its own sake. Those men who survived -- those eager to obey, eager to live for one another, since they had nothing else to vindicate them -- those men could neither carry on, nor preserve what they had received. Thus did all thought, all science, all wisdom perish on earth. Thus did men -- men with nothing to offer save their great numbers -- lose the steel towers, the flying ships, the power wires, all the things they had not created and could never keep. Perhaps, later, some men had been born with the mind and the courage to recover these things which were lost; perhaps these men came before the Councils of Scholars. They were answered as I have been answered -- and for the same reasons. 12.20 But I still wonder how it was possible, in those graceless years of transition, long ago, that men did not see whither they were going, and went on, in blindness and cowardice, to their fate. I wonder, for it is hard for me to conceive how men who knew the word "I," could give it up and not know what they lost. But such has been the story, for I have lived in the City of the damned, and I know what horror men permitted to be brought upon them. 12.21 Perhaps, in those days, there were a few among men, a few of clear sight and clean soul, who refused to surrender that word. What agony must have been theirs before that which they saw coming and could not stop! Perhaps they cried out in protest and in warning. But men paid no heed to their warning. And they, these few, fought a hopeless battle, and they perished with their banners smeared by their own blood. And they chose to perish, for they knew. To them, I send my salute across the centuries, and my pity. 12.22 Theirs is the banner in my hand. And I wish I had the power to tell them that the despair of their hearts was not to be final, and their night was not without hope. For the battle they lost can never be lost. For that which they died to save can never perish. Through all the darkness, through all the shame of which men are capable, the spirit of man will remain alive on this earth. It may sleep, but it will awaken. It may wear chains, but it will break through. And man will go on. Man, not men. 12.23 Here, on this mountain, I and my sons and my chosen friends shall build our new land and our fort. And it will become as the heart of the earth, lost and hidden at first, but beating, beating louder each day. And word of it will reach every corner of the earth. And the roads of the world will become as veins which will carry the best of the world's blood to my threshold. And all my brothers, and the Councils of my brothers, will hear of it, but they will be impotent against me. And the day will come when I shall break all the chains of the earth, and raze the cities of the enslaved, and my home will become the capital of a world where each man will be free to exist for his own sake. 12.24 For the coming of that day shall I fight, I and my sons and my chosen friends. For the freedom of Man. For his rights. For his life. For his honor. 12.25 And here, over the portals of my fort, I shall cut in the stone the word which is to be my beacon and my banner. The word which will not die, should we all perish in battle. The word which can never die on this earth, for it is the heart of it and the meaning and the glory. 12.26 The sacred word: EGO
