  2. Hey everyone!! It's been a while. Hope the past few years have been kind to you all.
  3. This discussion reminds me of how the media twisted the story about that woman spilling McDonald's coffee on herself.

    Who was it?

"We have no more right to consume happiness without making it than we have to consume wealth without producing it." I make a distinction between being productive and not being productive. The Rent Collector has a legal right to his property and I am not disputing that. But if he was not responsible for the creation of the item being rented out, he is collecting on the basis of a legal privilege, not on his productive efforts. He is not being paid for anything he -did-. If I had a choice between saving a productive prole or a rent collector from drowning I would save the prole. Ba'al Chatzaf And who would you choose between a tax collector and a rent collector?
  5. Why deport these people? Ba'al Chatzaf The irony is, they are already trying to deport themselves, so the petition actually means nothing outside they want to grant their wish but not let them keep their homes when they go. So we have reached the point people are trolling a Gvoernment website to do what amounts to snarky comments in the comment section? Brother, you asked for it! Actually, that's not ironic at all. That's just the failure to understand the difference in deportation and secession. Secession does not equal "self-deportation". Clever phrasing though!
  6. It's coincidental that I came across this thread as just last night I was talking to my brother about what goes on inside the brains of our furry little friends, specifically, our cat. We humans are introduced to language at such an early age it's hard to imagine sensing the world without assigning words to it, but then it's hard to imagine a cat somehow describing an object or a situation to another cat. Also, I wonder if we humans first communicated with our hands. It's evident, as can be seen with sign language, our species' ability to create a complex language through the use of our hands and arms, or more definitively, the use of gestures. This also makes me think of something my high school teacher taught me: verbs are vital to language. After all, communicating is itself an action whether we do it through gesture or word. Edit: Cat's do gesture.....
  7. Here's the petition to deport everyone who signed a petition to secede from the Union. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/deport-everyone-signed-petition-withdraw-their-state-united-states-america/dmQl1bXL
  8. "we also have fewer horses and bayonets" now that's funny
  9. So happy to hear him call out George Hippopotamus. Detest that guy!
  10. This is short lecture from Daniel Pink on the Science of Motivation. Although Pink doesn't directly credit Ayn Rand, her philosophy is very apparent in his presentation. For a quick proof go to 12:38. Also, I can't get over how much he looks like, Andy, from the t.v. series, Weeds.
  11. I found the Wikipedia article on the Vulcans fascinating. The quotes from G.W. blow my mind. I do realize they are pre 9/11 but still, quite amusing. "If we're an arrogant nation, they'll resent us. If we're a humble nation, but strong, they'll welcome us. Our nation stands alone right now in the world in terms of power, and that's why we have to be humble, and yet project strength in a way that promotes freedom." - Bush 2 “I'm not so sure the role of the United States is to go around the world and say this is the way it's got to be. We can help. And maybe it's just our difference in government, the way we view government. I want to empower the people. I want to help people help themselves, not have government tell people what to do. I just don't think it's the role of the United States to walk into a country and say, we do it this way, so should you.” - Bush 2 “I believe the role of the military is to fight and win war. I don’t want to try to put our troops in all places at all times. I don’t want to be the world’s policeman.” Bush 2
  12. MSK, sorry again! From now on I'll start threads like these in "Stumping in the Backyard". Anyways, I've held on to Ron Paul for too long. Whether or not there was corruption within his campaign, it doesn't matter. Ron Paul's bid for election is history. Now it's Gary Johnson all the way!
  13. http://www.ted.com/t..._of_beauty.html A man's ability to create beauty is theorized to be very important in natural selection. By being able to paint we demonstrate to potential mates our level intelligence, quality of our motor skills, the ability to plan, conscientiousness etc. In other words being an artist/craftsman is a reproductive advantage. Interesting!
  14. Lol, I always knew I liked you. And thanks for the revision!
  15. but then I get to thinking about how it's the denial of reality that causes men to do great things, but that's reality at work again. Reality acts as a reference point. Reality drove the men to Imagine something better. edit: see what I mean? if we can't recognize the reality we're in then how can we get out of it? Sometimes, the only thing to do is wait, because reality is constantly changing, anyways! edit 2: reality works against us some time, when we fail to imagine a better reality than what we had at one point in the past. when death is facing us, how do we deal with that reality? Maybe by accepting the reality that we aren't the center of the universe, that life will go on for other people, that more people have died than are living today.
  16. Sometimes what's counter-intuitive is actually what's in our best interest, but like you suggested, reality still wins, lol
  17. 4. In terms of mild drugs with mild - though undeniable - affect such as alcohol and tobacco (or marijuana for the Libertarians), the old joke come to mind. The man asks his doctor how to live longer. "Give up smoking, drinking, and sex," the MD says. The man asks, "Will I live to be 100?" The doctor replies, "No, but it will seem like it." The point is that we all have a finite time to live and how you enjoy it is your business, given, again, as above, that you pursue your own best interests according to reason as informed by reality. but isn't "pursuing your own best interests according to reason as informed by reality" subjective? A person't reality is different from one moment to the next and from that person to the next. It's the same with what is in one's best interests. That's constantly changing. Perhaps what is in one's best interest from their point of view is to use recreational drugs because they think the girl they wanna fuck will be impressed, because sometimes what's in our best interests is a little sex. But I wonder,is there anything that can be consistently applied to be "in one's best interests". I don't think that's possible because what's "in one's best interests" is constantly changing, is it not?
  18. Ok, what I wanna know is how many OL users have posted while under the influence? I haven't
  19. I'm not gonna name any names but someone on this thread could use some therapy sessions or maybe a personal massage with a happy ending will do the trick.
  20. I've seen a few things on the internet about corruption within the Ron Paul campaign. For example, some people are suggesting that Jesse Benton is a sell out. What do you think?
  21. There's one -ism that's responsible for many more corpses and that would be "Nationalism".
