  1. Hudgins to Speak at Junto Meeting May 1 in NYC On Thursday, May 1st Dr. Edward Hudgins, executive director of The Atlas Society, will speak at the Junto meeting in New York City on the topic "Measuring Economic Freedom: How to Do It and What It Tells Us." This free event will be held at the General Society Library at 20 West 44th St., New York, New York. The site is located between 5th & 6th Avenues, near Grand Central Terminal. The doors open at 7:00pm with the organized part of the meeting starting at around 7:30pm. Hudgins will begin at around 8:00pm with a short presentation followed by plenty of time for Q&A. The meeting wraps up by 10:00pm. Hudgins will argue that one of the great economic innovations in recent years has been the development of two indices to measure economic freedom around the world, one by Heritage Foundation and the other, in the United States, by the Cato Institute. Hudgins was involved in the development of both indices. The systematic approach of these indices allows us to rigorously advocate capitalism. These indices also point to measures of the ethical infrastructure of free markets, including the Objectivist morality, on which is should be based. If you are in the New York City area, join us for an intellectually stimulating evening! For further information see the Junto website at http://www.nycjunto.com. 2. I think she is just being a bully. I wouldn't play her stuff just because I don't like her and she is someone I would never sanction. I think, as long as your group is fairly small, something like this would be akin to playing music at a party. I'm not a lawyer though. You are correct to contact TAS if they hold the copyright. If the copyrights of TAS tapes are held by their respective authors (in this case Diana) you may need to change your plans. Kat
  3. This is a very sad story indeed. It seems like these women are born into slavery. They are exploited, treated like property and breeding animals and have no individual rights in their bizarre subculture. The misogynist cult needs to be disbanded, if for nothing else, child endangerment and statutory rape. Some major deprogramming needs to happen before these people can function on the outside or the kids placed in foster care. If the mothers are capable of taking care of the children, let them stay together, but I think that would be unlikely. It seems that they would be too brainwashed as to be considered mentally incompetent. This is the only life these people knew and they need transitional support. The men, if born into this little society, don't understand the damage they have inflicted on their families and should be monitored and deprogrammed. Lots of orders of protection to keep the women and children safe. These people are all sick. Some are criminals and some are victims. Let the courts sort it out. IMHO anyone who is a religious fundamentalist of any type has abandoned their rational faculty and is potentially dangerous to themselves or others. All the marriages in the cult should be invalidated and the cult leaders prosecuted... but to what extent, I am not sure. Castration seems reasonable. Kat
  4. Mike, we did earth night here to a small degree, but you were downstairs not participating. Most of the lights and stuff in the house were one but Tina had candles going in her room and turned off her computer during that time. She is by no means a tree-hugger, but is very frugal has a healthy respect for the environment without be a fanatic. She is getting into the simple living thing. I see nothing wrong with individuals living greener and trying to do their part to consciously reduce their own carbon footprint. It is their choice. They are living consciously for their own values. It is the politically correct foolishness and self-congratulatory smugness and preachiness that annoy me, regardless of the issue. When you don't join in with their cause some people get pretty weirded out or offended and take it personally. btw- Laure, great house! Can we move our cult out of Brant's shack and into your place? I promise not to turn off any lights. Kat

  6. Great points Ed. Thanks for getting it on video. Keep 'em coming. Just did my taxes with barely a few minutes to spare. Kat
  7. Pay no mind to the conspiracy theories. He speaks only for himself not OL, Objectivism or anyone else. That is how the forum works. We had him on moderation for a while and I thought he was gone. If he chooses to live his life in fear, that's his choice. Seems like a miserable existence to me. My apologies to those he may have offended. Pay him no mind. We here at OL are not ostriches, idiots or blips on a computer screen.... We are people. Good people. Sure we may not all know each other personally, but we are part of a community of like minded people. One of the good things about OL is that many members have met through their online contacts and attending Objectivist events such as those put on by The Atlas Society and other groups. Kat
  8. Sounds like you are living in Comcast Hell! Good to see you back. Kat

  10. It's Inky's birthday and she's all grown up now. Happy birthday Tina! Love, Mom
  11. Hi Howard and welcome to OL. I certainly don't hold that view that street drugs should be freely available and I'm wondering where that idea came from. This sounds more like hedonism or the anarchist libertarian perspective. Drugs such as these certainly are not acting in one's rational self-interest and I can't imagine Ayn Rand promoting the use and sale of dangerous substances. Can you provide quotes? Kat
  12. The University of Chicago Objectivist Club and the Ayn Rand Institute will be hosting the lecture "Ayn Rand's Normative Ethics: The Virtuous Egoist" by Dr. Tara Smith on Wednesday, April 16 from 7:00- 9:30 pm in Harper Memorial Library, Room 140. Admission is free and open to the public. Free pizza will be available starting at 6:45 pm. Directions to the University of Chicago campus and parking information can be found at maps.uchicago.edu Lecture Description: Ayn Rand is well known for advocating selfishness, yet the substance of that selfishness is rarely understood. This lecture presents Rand's ideal: a virtuous egoist. Dr. Smith explains why a person should be an egoist, the kind of egoism that Rand does and doesn't commend, and the kinds of virtues that a person must exercise in order to actually advance his self- interest. Along the way, Dr. Smith differentiates Rand's rational egoism from hedonism, materialism, and predation, and sketches Rand's egoistic account of two vital but widely misunderstood virtues: honesty and justice. Tara Smith is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas, where she currently holds the Anthem Foundation Fellowship for the Study of Objectivism. She is the author of Moral Rights & Political Freedom; Viable Values: A Study of Life as the Root & Reward of Morality (Rowman & Littlefield, 2000); and Ayn Rand's Normative Ethics: The Virtuous Egoist. Dr. Smith has published articles or lectured on such topics as self-interest, objectivity, individual rights, judicial "activism," pride, justice, forgiveness, and romantic love.

  16. Hi Donovan, welcome to OL. Thanks for the suggestions. If you look in your profile, you will see that I have added a couple fields to help people make connections. Michael and I met online. Our little love story is called, "The Virtue of Silliness" and we hope others will find their match online too. A good friend of mine is getting married in a month to a guy she met online. hmmmm maybe I should start a matchmaking service called Kitten's connections.... or not. Anyhoo, I have not figured how to make locations searchable, but if you have a local Objectivist Group, please feel free to post about it in the Events and Happenings forum and make an entry on the calendar with the date, location and event and it will show up at the bottom of the page under upcoming events. I think it goes about a week forward so please when you name your event, start with the date. Kat

  19. Google is not obligated to post everything that comes through. They remove blogs, make advertisers abide by terms of service and remove sites from their search engine results. That is their right as site owners. Just as Michael and I have the right to keep people from posting on OL at our discretion. Google is a company and does what it thinks is in the interest of its shareholders. In the second case, there is litigation pending so that is why the documents were removed from the internet. If all the evidence is published in the papers or on the internet it could be grounds for a mistrial. Kat

    Eggs Benedict

from Hungry-Girl.com. This is for one of those yummy favorite foods I thought I would never be able to eat again.... Eggs Benechick Ingredients: 1/2 Thomas' Light Multi Grain English Muffin (or half of another light english muffin**) 1 large egg 1 slice lean ham 1 tbsp. fat-free mayonnaise 1 tsp. Hellmann's/ Best Foods Dijonnaise 1 tsp. Brummel & Brown Spread (or another reduced calorie buttery spread**); softened 1 tsp. lemon yogurt Directions: Prepare sauce by stirring to combine B&B spread, mayo, yogurt and Dijonnaise; set aside. Crack egg gently into a small cup or dish. Fill a medium-sized pot with 2 inches of water, and bring water to a boil. Once boiling, lower temperature until a steady and consistent, but VERY low, boil is reached. Gently pour in the egg and allow to cook for 3 - 5 minutes (3 for a runnier egg, 5 for very firm), or until egg white is mostly opaque. Carefully remove egg by sliding a spatula underneath it and placing it on a plate. Use a paper towel to soak up any excess water. Toast muffin half and heat ham if desired. Heat sauce in the microwave for approximately 20 seconds and stir (add a little water if you prefer a thinner sauce). Top muffin with ham and egg, and then cover with sauce. Enjoy! Serves 1. enlighten me

I am not exactly clear on what you are asking. Every person sets their own standards for their own life. Objectivism is an individualistic philosophy and it is certainly not nihilism or hedonism, both which lack a moral compass. Here is what Ayn Rand said about hedonism in the Virtue of Selfishness (taken from Wikipedia - Hedonism and Egoism).
  23. The Psychology of Romantic Love (Romantic Love in an Anti-Romantic Age) Dr. Branden is happy to announce a new, revised edition of The Psychology of Romantic Love: Romantic Love in an Anti-Romantic Age will be available in book stores and online January 31st. "This book is about my own love for love", he writes, "my love for the experience and adventure that love offers". For all those who long for love and yet wonder whether their dreams are attainable, The Psychology of Romantic Love shows the way to translate dreams into reality. The book explores the nature of romantic love on many levels-the philosophical, the psychological, the historical, the sociological, and the physiological. Dr. Branden explains why so many people say that romantic love is just not possible in today's world and-drawing on his experience with thousands of couples-finds that such love is still a possibility for anyone who understands its essence and is willing to accept its challenges.
  24. How? Because Objectivism is an OPEN system, a school of thought, a philosophy for living on earth. I'm sure many of us were Objectivists before we ever heard the word or heard of Ayn Rand. Many of us don't even call ourselves Objectivists. Objectivism didn't die with Ayn Rand, it just hasn't evolved much due to constraints imposed by the orthodoxy who want to keep it just how she left it. Kat
