Elections 2008

The GOP has lost three special house elections in a row. They have all been longtime GOP seats. The losses for the GOP in the US Senate maybe has many as eight. The Presidential election looks close but we may not have gridlock after it is over. My personal opinion is Obama maybe another Jimmy Carter with the results not being hostages at an embassy but a mushroom cloud over an an American city. Does anyone see any reason for hope?

Robin Hood

This is a show from the BBC. Robin Hood has been done many times before including the great Erroll Flynn movie. This show is not as as good as that movie but it is well done. It depicts Robin and his Merry Men more correctly. The cast is young English actors who I don't know but are very good.

Hustle

This is a show on AMC. It is about a team of con men in Great Britain. All the actors are British expect for Robert Vaughn. Robert Vaughn has been around since the 60ths and he was annoying then and is still annoying. The show however is worth watching. The people they con deserve being conned.

Dexter

I've been watching this show on Showtime On Demand. It's strange but very well acted and written. The only person I recognize in it is Michael C. Hall who plays Dexter. Dexter is a serial killer with a passion for justice.

We are walking for Autism Speaks

My family is participating in Walk Now for Autism to help find a cure for autism. As you probably know, my son has an autistic spectrum disorder called PDD so autism is something that touches our family personally every day. Autism is the second most common developmental disorder in the United States affecting one in every 150 children born today. Despite some promising discoveries, the cause of autism is unknown and a cure does not exist. Research is crucial. Every 20 minutes another child is

Dragnet continued

Dragnet was an important breakthrough in the detective story. Before Dragnet the police officer was not the solver of the crime. See Sherlock Holmes, The Maltese Falcon where the hero is a private detective. The Maltese Falcon the police play a very small part in the story. With Dragnet we see the police procedural as a new detective novel.

Dragnet 1954

I saw this movie again last night. I also saw it when it came out. The first thing that hit me was this was the way the LA police department wanted to be seen. They probably approved. One of the items the LAPD was not pleased about in 1954 was the Bill of Rights. One of the characters says that only a guilty person would need a lawyer. There was no right to remain silent. In Los Angles in 1954 there were no visible people of color. Sometimes watching something from the past you realize t

William F Buckley 1925-2008

As I have noted on the main OL web page some comments about Buckley's death. I would like to suggest to readers you look at National Review On Line for a fuller view. The first right wing book I read was Up From Liberialism. I liked National Review when I first found it. Ayn Rand's objections to Buckley have been noted and should not be ignored but has I have said he will be missed.

Duke Lacrosse Case again

Thirty-eight Duke Lacrosse players are suing Duke and the City of Durham. Let's hope this means blaming Nifong for everything will not work. I would love to be at Duke President Brodhead's depostion.

Obama 2

He continues to win. The Clinton folks are saying we knew he would have a good month but Texas and Ohio may not be the cake walks the Clinton people expected. Obama is getting more scrunity.

Ezra Levant

I want to thank Tom Stone and Shawn Klein for linking to this statement. Mr. Levant got into trouble with Human Right Commission in Alberta. His opening statement is on Shawn Klein's blog. It will remind of Howard Roark at his trial. He takes the moral high ground and never loses. I am proud Mr Levant is part of the human race.

The Capitalist Manifesto

Has anyone else looked at this book? It's by Andrew Bernstein who is an ARI person who I don't like. I must report I was surprised. One of the biggest surprises is Bernstein refers to people who have been booted from the ARI camp including George Reisman. He also mentions Paul Johnson and Robert Higgs

ARI Bookstore Purchases

I ordered and received some items from ARI bookstore. I have listened completely on only one of them. "Atlas Shrugged A Second Declaration of Independence" which I thought was very good. I am listening to Lisa Van Damme talks on Gems of Short Fiction. It is interesting and enjoyable. ARI is now offering attachments such as outlines only on the internet.
