DrJack55 Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Hey folks! I'm glad I was able to find this forum...Anyways, let me get to the point..So I'm a liberal.. raised in a liberal family and nearly all of my friends and family have shared the same liberal ideology. The problem is that something changed with me about two years ago. I used to be really fat... orca fat. I'm 6 feet tall and weighed 315 pounds. I'm not sure what triggered it, but I decided to lose the weight. In the end I succeeded and I feel quite good.I made another change.. I decided that I wasn't going to sit on my *** for the rest of my life living off of disability (veteran) from the government. I went back to school. To the surprise of all those around me, I've become a 4.0 student. This from the kid that was on academic probation 10 years ago. I'm now getting ready to take the LSAT and apply for law school. But this isn't about weight loss and academics is it, that's not exactly why I'm here...I've noticed that I've become less tolerant of those that don't pull themselves up by their bootstraps and make the changes they need to bring about their own happiness. I've also noticed that the old excuses I've heard people make about their lot in life don't seem to ring true anymore. My friends that used to be with me have fallen away. I've heard through other people that some of them stopped being a part of my life because they were jealous of my own successes and didn't want to be reminded of their own shortfalls.I'm hoping that by coming here I can get some answers to some questions I have and maybe share some experiences with other like-minded people. I don't dare tell anyone I know that I'm coming here, because I know that I would never hear the end of it and let's be honest, Objectivism is exactly held in high esteem in the public education system .. but anyways, here I am... got any coffee?- Jack R.

syrakusos Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 I do not like dark roasts. My wife complains that my coffee is too red, so mine is labeled "Red Dawn."Oh, wait! I get it! It's not all about me...Welcome, DrJack55 and thanks for sharing the personal yarn. Nice to meet you. Please be an active participant.I never cared much about grades, either, 2.8 or worse, then when I finished my BS and MA I was an honors student.Mostly, school got easier, but also, maturity and focus paid off. So, I understand where you are coming from, old man.Welcome aboard.
Brant Gaede Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Hi, Jack. What is this "liberal ideology"? I grew up surrounded by "liberals," but don't know the answer to this question.--Brant
DrJack55 Posted May 28, 2012 Author Posted May 28, 2012 Thanks for the warm welcome folks. MIchael - It is interesting being about the only one in class who seems to be interested in actually doing the work and being there. Well, more for me I guess
DrJack55 Posted May 28, 2012 Author Posted May 28, 2012 Oh and BTWMy wife is one of those liberals LoL I have to alt-tab from this forum or other Rand material when she comes around. I swear, I think it would be easier to explain surfing porn on the web over being caught on this forum
caroljane Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Oh and BTWMy wife is one of those liberals LoL I have to alt-tab from this forum or other Rand material when she comes around. I swear, I think it would be easier to explain surfing porn on the web over being caught on this forum I am a socialist, you can say you are on OL to rescue a vulnerable old lady from bad company...if your wife would believe it.Welcome to MSKs Multifacetia Idea Palace.
Selene Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 My wife is one of those liberals LoL Ah yes, the "new" liberal...intolerant, repressive, totalitarian and viciously dangerous. I would suggest:1) sleeping with one (1) eye open; and2) tape on your mouth, just in case you might mutter an independent thought in the middle of the night!AdamPost Script:Beware the Widow Woman from the frozen Northern Tundra...dangerously disarmingly devious...
anthony Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Hi Dr Jack,Ah.. just tell her you're slumming on the wrong side of the tracksand infiltrated OL to learn all its dastardly designs.Tough work, but somebody...Welcome,Tony
Michael Stuart Kelly Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Jack,Look at this, will ya'?I am a socialist...Don't be too fooled, though. I suspect this is one way for Carol (her real name) to manifest her rugged individualism. What better way than to be a sheep among a pack of wolves? A sheep in wolves' clothing, so to speak? Michael

" or, "selfishness is a virtue," or, "Ayn Rand! Ayn Rand! Ayn Rand!", etc.--Brantdo you talk in your sleep?
caroljane Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 And if you renew your vows do not include quotes from , well, Fred Coles idea.

MichaelO well, I identify myself for convenience to a Rand-savvy audience. In my own milieu I am just a centrist like everybody else. In Randland I am more or less a wild-eyed Commie.
syrakusos Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 MIchael - It is interesting being about the only one in class who seems to be interested in actually doing the work and being there. Well, more for me I guess Well, that is almost a direct quote that I got. You can pick your numbers but my professors generally held that about 25% of students actually do more than assigned homework and only 25% do the assigned homework completely.Welcomes aside, feel free to post more in other topic areas.Best wishes.
caroljane Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Well you know what they say about sheep...Mmm yes, and we know certain baas about you....
