Yes, absolutely it makes sense but the one thing that keeps me from any defined conclusion is that (my amateur thoughts) was once the food is chilled back down then it doesn't matter how many extra bacteria because they all would grow at the same slowed pace. But maybe where I am confused is not that food goes bad because the bacteria grows but that it multiplies and if bad is defined by having x number of bacteria which is a certain number of doublings away, then the more you start out with, the less number of doublings you must do to reach x number

I really would have posted this in a technology forum but it appears that OL doesn't have one! Just a quick question of curiosity As technology improves and once we get to the point where CG is so easy (as in drag and drop image, run filter, and render for a few minutes), so cheap (that anyone can buy the software) and cursory for hardware (that average desktops can do the job) it seems obvious to me that we will have an increase in black mails and libel. In other words if I can easily created a video and insert (random celebrity) image into it many people will either try to get something out of the celebrity or even just post the video to ruin reputations. My real question is, do you think that this will tend to lead to a future where video evidence is considered inadmissible in court? One possible way out is if the app used for such CG manipulation requires that you be online and connected to their server which then records exactly what was done so that there is always an encrypted database that can be cross-checked just in case. Problem with that is if someone is able to cheat (change the database, do manipulations without being recorded, etc) then their video evidence would have an even higher level of credibility because "everyone knows that you can't beat the system so it must be real" ps I'm writing 3 questions in different categories to brain storm on. A question of curiosity Do you think that food that has been warmed, lasts for a shorter period of time then food that has been consistently chilled. So you take 3 portions of the exact same food. You put all of them in a fridge to reach a uniform temperature. You then take one out just long enough to reach a fairly warm room temperature (80 degrees Fahrenheit, no humidity) then put it back in fridge. You also take the third piece and raise its temp to the same room temperature but this time with high humidity (like in a bathroom with the shower on) and put it back in the fridge. Which one do you think would go bad first? Would the changes make any difference at all? I don't know the answer and would prefer to brainstorm (not get hit with a link) If you have any input, please comment ps I'm writing 3 questions in different categories to brain storm on. A question of curiosity Does/can an infinity mirror (having two mirrors reflect each other) show/prove the finite speed of light? So, if you use the highest resolution camera available to resolve the smallest microscopic reflected image possible within the infinite reflections and you wave your arm, would you see a delay from when you waved it to when the light image finally reaches our microscopic target? By the way if this has already been done, I'm more interested in what you think would happen then in a link. Hello Francisco, this is some great material. It is easiest to see how the public firefighting department can be replaced with private contractors, and I can see now also the case for private courts. Thinking about it, they already exist today in the form of various private arbitration agreements. What would you say about national defense, however. Would people "voluntarily" contract with a private national defense provider, knowing that if their neighbours contract, they can easily free-ride instead? And if they wouldn't, do you not accept the necessity of a public service and a forced taxation to pay for it? The only argument I've seen on the topic was made by Harry Brown in How I Found Freedom In An Unfree World, who claimed that national defense is not needed at all and neither is the government. The citizens are safer that way, since who would conquer them and how? If there is no central government, and no bureaucratic machinery to control a country, an invader cannot force the central element to surrender and take over the machinery - he'd have to conquer and police every single one of the hundreds of millions of citizens, keeping a permanent occupational force in the area. That is a semi-passable argument if you're thinking of rational invaders seeking to conquer you. It is very disappointing today though, as we also have to consider invaders trying to just wipe you out and make Lebensraum for their own gang. EDIT: I guess, you can also take the same stand I made about NASA some posts ago. If I care about national defense, and my neighbour doesn't, what right do I have to force him to pay for it through taxation... I feel like in the instance that someone doesn't pay for national defense and yet the defense paid for me and other neighbors actually does work to repel the invaders , then it should be lawful for us payers to forcefully eject the freerider from the lands.The main problem though with the no government based defense scenario is that the entire world would have to operate under the same conditions. If the US dropped their government based national defense then another country's centrally coordinated army could easily occupy entire regions and multiple other countries could form pacts and split up America same as they did 300 years ago. In fact because you wouldn't have a forced "same" vision on defense and unity of the country, in the case of invaders there would be those neighbors who would fight FOR the occupiers because they think it's the safer option. Lastly as far as the text on private courts, I haven't read the file yet, though I have downloaded it, but it's hard for me to see where the punitive power of the court comes from without backing by governmental force. All the participants in the court will not simply follow the words of some judge even if that judge is agreed upon. How do you ensure judgements are followed out would be my question. If the answer is "my private army is legally able to use force after the judge rules in my favor" why would people wait for the judge at all? Either way, I haven't read it so....

I like this version much better. Its much harder to argue against in my opinion and here's why- In Luca's first paragraph he takes a more direct approach to Elke's statement of him being a leech. Previously he just blew her off, this time his words let her know that he sees her side of things. He accepts the fact that the government does provide some services that he is willing to use and not call immoral but the key is he would rather than pay for those services and those alone. That introduces the theme of freedom (as I see it) versus your previous them of immorality and evil. I resonate with this a lot because for me freedom is the ultimate goal. There is nothing wrong with me sending money to a project I would like to support whether the project is run by family, friend, private company or government. The problem with taxes is when you can't choose what you will support- the involuntary nature. He does lose moral ground in the final paragraph by stating that (technically) he is not in alignment with integrity BUT i think he does gain strength for his argument by first being honest * and secondly by re-framing his use of the services as a tool of war. Use the services in an attempt to bleed the service dry. Same could be said, in a negative way, of piracy. If you don't pay the artist then they will finally stop providing the product. *It is a big issue for me when people use certain reasons for their actions and then try to claim those reasons as immutable, inherent, creator given law, when the fact is for most of the reasons the basis is really- its convenient/not convenient for me mentally or physically. Still, it does bring up a important question. In the event that lassiez faire produces and environment where a large portion of the population feel that they are being taking advantage of, are jealous at what others have, or actually are being held down by a wealthy elite, what is the defense against violent uprising? Its all fine and well to show that the mob is immoral or irrational but where does that get you when the mob is on your front steps? This isn't a defense of either side but the fact remains that throughout history those who felt they don't have the clout to be heard at the negotiating table, take their negotiations to the streets. Does this mean the solution is to build fences around the lower class to physically protect those who have a majority of wealth/property? Will we be ok if America resembled sections of Africa with large groups basically substance farming in the countryside? I mean would you feel that it was a victory of capitalism if that was the case whether it was the fault of the poor or not?

How would a soldier in the U.S. Army cover higher taxes by raising his "prices"? What I am agreeing with Greg on is that shrink and other overhead is built into the cost of the product. It's a cost of doing business, same as labor cost or lawyers fees. The fact that you are trying to dispute that is surprising. Honestly I thought that you (and a few others on this forum) controlled a business but that sort of ignorance to the " cost of business" is hard to reconcile.

I do well despite government taxation because it is already factored into the cost of every product and service I sell. And that's why I don't complain of being robbed like you do. MLK, Gandhi, Mandela and all great opposition leaders throughout history have always preached this precept. Further, it is critical that in any democracy, investigation must be completed and due process must be honored before any government or police members are judged responsible. That said, my greater source of personal concern, outrage and sympathy beyond this particular case is focused neither upon one night’s property damage nor upon the acts, but is focused rather upon the past four-decade period during which an American political elite have shipped middle class and working class jobs away from Baltimore and cities and towns around the U.S. to third-world dictatorships like China and others, plunged tens of millions of good, hard-working Americans into economic devastation, and then followed that action around the nation by diminishing every American’s civil rights protections in order to control an unfairly impoverished population living under an ever-declining standard of living and suffering at the butt end of an ever-more militarized and aggressive surveillance state. The innocent working families of all backgrounds whose lives and dreams have been cut short by excessive violence, surveillance, and other abuses of the Bill of Rights by government pay the true price, and ultimate price, and one that far exceeds the importances of any kids’ game played tonight, or ever, at Camden Yards. Reporting live from the "warzone" Okay its not that bad but cars have been burned, stores have been burned, and businesses looted. My mind is hitting so many different points, reasons and perspectives right now that it is hard to fully commit it either or much less to speak coherently, but here are my observances. On the police- So far the police have not really engaged the crowds (today they are lining up for the possibility of repeat) and the Mayor is getting flack in some spaces for the lack of action. They mostly formed walls to prevent rioters from getting pass into certain areas but they weren't doing much arresting until later last evening. Up to 15 officers have been injured including broken bones. The Mayor specifically said that she was going to give those who wish to destroy space to do so. I understand the residents frustration AND I understand the position that she is in. Already there have been posts on FaceBook with pictures of one or two officers throwing rocks but the posts don't mention that the rioters have been and were throwing first. If the Mayor said "okay boys lets take them down" there would be even more rioting as the home bloggers and posters twisted the information. As far as the officers who were behind Mr. Gray's death. They should have spoke up a week ago, before the funeral. We may not be in this position now. If you go pass the line here and there in your daily apprehension of possible (innocent until proven guilty) criminals and everything has worked out so far- such as you scared them straight or showed that you aren't one to be trifled with- fine, but when it goes wrong and someone dies because of your actions, or even if it wasn't your actions...... you gotta speak up man! Lose the job, do the time, whatever. Somebody died! On the rioters The family and the speakers at the funeral not only called for non-violence, they called for NO protests. These riots seem to have been started by youth at the mall and clashes with the police, by the so-called team-up between the city's Bloods, Crips and Black Guerrilla Family who vowed to take out officers together. They are crazy The CVS that was shown on the news is no more than a 1/2 mile from my house and the mall, a mile. Our neighborhood shopping center with a grocery store, a mom and pop hardware store, a laundromat, and a Rite-Aid was completely boarded up when I went by this morning and that's one block from where I live. When I went out yesterday to talk to the neighbors about what was happening, we witnessed girls riding down the street attempting to sell hair weave out of the car that they obviously had just stolen. We listened as individuals wondered if any liquor stores had been hit so they could go pass. We even heard one hood rat (female term) say that she wished that "they" should have run up in the rental office of a apartment complex that she got fired from. What does any of that have to do with the funeral? But on the other hand I asked my wife if Empress (my 7 year old) knew what was going on. Upon explaining it (turns out she had seen burning cars on the way back from aftercare) she said "so they are just breaking into places and taking stuff" We said yes. She said "well why aren't you guys out there taking stuff too?" This is from a 7 year old who goes to a school 15 minutes away and who has no friends in the neighborhood. The only time she goes out is if we are with her (her mother's rules, not mine ) So why would she have such a attitude? I realized you can't call these rioters animals. You can't say that they have chosen to go down a specific mental path. It would appear more reasonable to say that they never grew up/left the natural path of wanting stuff. We want stuff with minimal effort. And if we won't get caught then why not. Its with proper guidance that you start to see the benefit and reward to hard work and victory over frustration. These rioters are living in conditions that effect their mental path. The environment is almost like a disease, a condition, like depression. What else do you do when all you know is what you DON'T have and naturally you want it. Others have more money, other neighborhoods look better, other people don't have to choose between diapers and food. And as a youth (physically or mentally), they have the added pressure of having to choose between bus fare or going to the club. A healthy lunch or liquor for the night. One can stand by and judge the choices that they make but keep the environment in mind. What is the solution... I don't know. The destruction- Even though there have been multiple fires, etc, the city is 80 square miles. Most of the city is not touched at all. I even watched live as a gang went through a residential neighborhood, did nothing to homes, and then attacked a chain store. Life seems to be going on fine for those not directly affected. But on the other hand the fear level is high. Schools as far as 30 miles away were closed rumors have shut down other places. The tourist area, the Inner Harbor, is untouched possibly because of a massive SWAT team presence. I just hope that areas like mine don't turn into food deserts as the one grocery store decides not to reopen.

Just out of interest, even accepting that this is an idealised world, what do you think of the characters joining Galt? Were they misguided to walk away from their passions in order to remove their support and their sanction? Many of them didn't leave their passions, they simply relocated to a different area to practice them again. The others who did leave their passions all together to work for another in the gulch.... I had a big problem with that when I read it the second time. Seemed like it would lead to big frustration as people who spent there whole lives working out of joy in a particular industry suddenly had to put that life satisfaction on the back burner. But then it was pointed out by a OL member that the gulch was not a permanent settlement and by the end of the book they went back into the world
