  1. Power of Myth is a good starting point, but if you can find Transformations of Myth Through Time grab it. I videotaped it off air many years ago. There’s a whole lecture on Roman mystery cults. Parts of it were cut together to make Mythos, which is better produced but ruins the lectures with instrusive editing and obnoxious commentary by Susan Sarandon. Hero with a Thousand Faces is his most famous book, but the 4 volume Masks of God series delves deeper.
  2. Ah, Ancient Greek, no wonder the translation program didn't work.
  3. Great title, sounds very promising. Obligatory emoticon: I know I've started to overdo it. Jesus is an even more apt reference. With him, the really bad stuff started long after he was dead. Comparing Rand to Hitler is over the top, tread lightly. Robert: I'm of two minds on the SLOP wars, it's entertaining to watch, but I know I'd have walked long ago.
  4. He looks like one of the boys from South Park! Anyway, Robert just posted saying "no mas", so looks like the fun's over. "When I conclude that a poster is talking out his fundamental aperture, I quit responding to him." EDIT: Beautiful victory lap by Jabba, he's trying to get the fire started again, will RC take the bait? Who doesn't love a cliffhanger! Anyway, if no one posts a translation of all this Greek I'm going to eschew my Enlightenment values and go Medieval on someone's ass.
  5. http://translation.babylon.com/Greek translates Πλην οἱ πτωχοὶ τῶV πνεύματι as "Other than οἱ πτωχοὶ τῶV spirit". Ed's doesn't translate at all. This is boring, and meanwhile, SLOP is on fire, you have to check it out. Look for the latest by this child: he's so funny it's beyond description.
  6. Πλην οἱ πτωχοὶ τῶ πνεύματι! Translations please! Or I’m calling in the Daleks and the Cybermen. Then you’ll be sorry.
  7. I looked at it again, and now might just revise “sorry twit” to “vile twit”. Sneers, distortions, and fabrications are this piss-ant’s stock in trade. On another thread there’s been discussion of the Comtean idea of cerebral hygiene, well, with Butler Shaffer one must stand ready to apply the sanitary napkin. He’s since put up a reply to his (unnamed) critics http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/042454.html, it’s basically autobiographical and doesn’t back up the garbage in his prior post. This stinks of self promotion. Waiting for a call from GQ, BS? For an example of how to sneer at Rand skillfully, see this article by Christopher Hitchens: [http://web.archive.org/web/20010822001344/http://www.business2.com/articles/mag/print/0,1643,16581,FF.html He registers his disagreement without misrepresenting Rand’s positions. The worst he did was characterize Larry Ellison as a “devoted Randian”, which was a stretch, but tied in well with the apt example of the Microsoft antitrust case. BS, by contrast, dribbles and drools over such examples as the insurance and pharma companies influencing the health care debate, and demonstrates no tie in to the “Persecuted Minority” article. BS has earned nothing but scorn.
  8. What’s there to answer? Rand wrote, I think in the “Persecuted Minority” talk that he’s mocking, that among Capitalism’s greatest enemies are the capitalists. She dramatized this in AS. At best he’s arguing against an article title. This is the first I’ve heard of Burton Shaffer, but based on this pair of paragraphs, I’m inclined to dismiss him as one sorry twit. Waste of time folks. libertarianbob01, was there a point that you felt needed answering?
  9. Welcome aboard. Looks like you’re into comparative religion, have you dipped into Joseph Campbell?
  10. Hitchens has less time than usual, so he fires off broad blasts to make the best use of his time. There are plenty of other debates with him on YouTube where he’s subtler. Stephen Fry doesn’t do these things (debates etc.) nearly as much, so for me he was the main draw here. He’s taken some heat, look at this: http://christopherhitchenswatch.blogspot.com/2009/10/our-passions-forge-our-fetters-part-2.html strange how Hitchens and Fry are so horrified by sexual wrongdoing and yet both in this debate and elsewhere promote the kind of sexual libertinism and perversity that actually makes all of these problems worse (Fry himself, raped as a schoolboy, elsewhere thought it wise to glibly announce that he liked the experience and that there was too much fuss about this sort of thing (see his interview on Shrink Wrap with Pamela Stephenson)). Is the rape of boys only wrong when priests do it? Here’s the interview they’re referencing, the relevant part starts just after 4 minutes in. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80LEYB4V-FI&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80LEYB4V-FI&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80LEYB4V-FI&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Echoes of the Peron imbroglio?
  11. It's up already, I haven't seen it all yet, it looks like it's well filmed and recorded. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvZz_pxZ2lw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFTj9n40rNo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-q8US0QRs4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQRkfZzyfcU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i391gBoEo58
  12. As I recall, Irina and Sasha are cut completely.
  13. Here's another great Hugh Laurie number, this one's from A Bit of Fry and Laurie, it's his Bob Dylan impression
  14. Sure, in fact I was thinking you look a bit like “13”. If you’re a Hugh Laurie fan, check out his novel The Gun Seller, its really good. A James Bond spoof, with flavorings via PG Wodehouse. His best program, I think, was Jeeves and Wooster from the early 90’s. Also A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Black Adder were great. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>"The trouble with you, Spode, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the London scene by going about in black shorts, you think you're someone. You hear them shouting "Heil, Spode!" and you imagine it is the Voice of the People. That is where you make your bloomer. What the Voice of the People is saying is: "Look at that frightful ass Spode swanking about in footer bags! Did you ever in your puff see such a perfect perisher?" PG Wodehouse, The Code of the Woosters 1938
  15. Hmm... You were one of the people egging me on, now I've suddenly gone from to Inserting all these emoticons doesn't take so much time once you get the hang of it, c'mon Adam you can keep up. You can't expect to remain the Jester King without effort, tenure is for trolls. Does anyone remember Peikoff's lecture "A Picture is Not an Argument"? I don't, but I bet I've violated every prohibition he set out.
  16. So will the next Phil tribute song be by Peaches & Herb, or Gloria Gaynor? We should take a poll. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2vvOPsiVdU Bad lip synching in that one, ick. And finally, apropos of nothing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUslGSoEH8I
  17. Phil keeps twisting his blade in the wound he’s inflicted: http://www.objectivistliving.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7712&pid=83062&st=260entry83062 Long goodbyes deepen the hurt… but do what you must. He deserves a special tribute, so Phil, remember this as your OL torch song: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QabEgTRFGQ0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QabEgTRFGQ0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QabEgTRFGQ0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
  18. Indeed. Its really just the headline I object to, to assert that AS has been so widely read is ridiculous. It’s a credibility killer, it's propaganda. The 8.1% figure later in the article also sounds too high, but is perhaps plausible. By the same rough analysis above, 8.1% means each copy of AS is read by 2.6 people on average. My original copy was read by at least 3 people, but the one I have now has had no unique reader (only me as a rereader). That works out to 1.5 readers per copy. Obviously library copies get much more mileage, so maybe it does work out to 2.6, hard to say.
  19. Seems the sole categories are the propagandists and white-washers vs. the diminishers and Rand-haters. Writing this http://www.objectivistliving.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7829&pid=83020&st=0entry83020 means I’m on which side? If these are the exclusive categories does either practice the Objectivist virtue of honesty? I think its better to read the Jabba-wocky on SLOP rather doing a cut & paste here, then you get to observe the hysterical mouth-frothings of Kasper, Perren and Frediano, interspersed with the calmer, rational discourse of Parille and Campbell. Such contrast, it speaks for itself. http://www.solopassion.com/node/6946 I don’t understand what Ellen is disputing (The Point of PARC), there’s no real content to her original post, then the thread mainly consists of the same old deconstructionism of Robert Campbell’s motives, character, musical taste etc. that you find everwhere else on SLOP. If she were trying to finagle a speaking engagement or book deal it might make some sense, but how would Jabba help with that? Plus, she continues to criticize PARC, pretty harshly. To me this recalls the Lilliputian conflict over eggs. http://www.solopassion.com/node/6956
  20. Schopenhauer wrote that “marrying means to halve one's rights and double one's duties”. You need to recognize that going in. Social intercourse involves trade-offs, the alternative is what? To seek out a life like Robinson Crusoe’s, alone on your own island?
  21. 7 million copies of AS have been sold in the US, the population is 300 million, 75% are adults (all figures approximate and rounded). If 25% of the adult population has read AS, then each copy has been read by (on average) 8 different people, not considering the fact that some readers are now dead (e.g. the author). Fishy?
  22. Best wishes, here's the OL wave just for you!
  23. If you can find DeLouis Fils brand hollandaise, grab it. It’ll be in the refrigerated section. It keeps for a while (2-3 weeks) after opening. Also, freshly sliced canadian bacon is a great upgrade, get it sliced about ½ centimeter thick. Where I shop the brand is Nueskes, they make great applewood bacon also. Substitute smoked salmon for a nice change, I say get Scottish or Irish, I for one don’t go for Gravlax. Bon appetit!
  24. The acrimonious departures of JR & Phil make you think of the Beethoven 9th? At least you didn’t quote the actual Ode to Joy, as it is I infer you’re making a call for peace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K4635W4roY
