  2. Ah - that part's not shown in the attached link.
  3. I thought it was fine. The speech said "She did not live to earn approval stickers, she lived for herself, that she might achieve things that are the glory of all humanity. These are my terms. I do not care to play by any others". Where was Rand mocked for her looks? http://popmodal.com/video/2549/Ayn-Rand--S...ns-Fountainhead The glory of the creator, or "all humanity"? Selma (or is it Patty) goes ape over the sexy "guy" who wrote the book when she sees "his" picture on the back cover. I'm not sure what you're talking about here. I didn't Selma or Patty in the Fountainhead part of the episode.
  4. You could just ask the blind man to touch a part of his body. Then when he touches something tell him what he touched. Then he will say "Wow, how did you know what I touched?" You can say "Because I have eyes and I can see". Then he says "But how do I know that what I touched is what you say it is"? Then you say "Because you're Mom taught you where each part of your body is and what each part is called". Then he says "How do I know you're not my Mom"? The you say "Because I'm a guy and I don't even sound like a woman". The he says "Maybe the person who claimed to be my Mom was also a guy. Maybe none of you are real. Maybe I'm not even real. Maybe existence doesn't exist".
  5. I found a few sources. Alyssa is another translation with the same meaning. But it could be false. Maybe it's all made up by some crazy Objectivist? I just thought it was interesting and figured I'd mention it. http://www.meaning-of-names.com/greek-names/alisa.asp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alyssa http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Alyssa
  6. I looked up the name Alisa (Ayn's original name in Russia from what I've read) and found that it is a greek name that means rational. I never heard anyone mention this before and I thought it was interesting.

  9. Did police officers protect and defend citizens during the Russian Civil War? Or did they help government take away people's rights? What was Ayn Rand's definition of "police force"? Was it the same as the police force that exists in America today? Or did Ayn Rand's definition have different limits on power? Or was that not specified?
  10. I always figured that if you take away the government supported fire departments, intelligent competitive builders would build houses that are not as likely to burn (use more metal, brick, concrete, glass, etc instead of wood and plastic), and they would add fire suppression systems to the homes, so if a fire did start, it would be extinguised right away automatically. Then people would choose to buy those homes instead of the ones that burn. But because we have governments and public fire departments and insurance companies, the builders don't have as much incentive to be creative as they would otherwise. I don't understand why we need police departments either. I think public police departments are the biggest source of corruption on the planet.
  11. Asturias (Leyenda) performed by John Williams (John Williams the guitar player):
  12. This discussion reminds of the final two episodes of Seinfeld where Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer all ended up in jail because they violated the "Good Samaritan Law" by not helping the fat guy who was being carjacked in Latham, Massachusetts. But I looked it up on Wikipedia and found that laws like this actually exist in Europe and Canada - "Duty to rescue": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duty_to_rescue
  13. The Simpsons! Especially "The Monkey Suit" episode. And there's another episode where I believe Lisa goes to an Ayn Rand School for the Gifted.
  14. Any form of auto racing. Very fun to participate, almost as fun to watch. Fast, loud, dangerous, exciting. Combines physical skill, strategy, engineering, manufacturing, financial planning. Technology developed in auto racing benefits passenger cars in terms of safety, performance and fuel efficiency.
  15. I've lost about 25 lbs over the last 15 months and I have some advice. 1. Make health and fitness a permanent lifestyle. Don't just diet to quickly lose weight to look good temporarily. 2. Learn about fluid / electrolyte balance (sodium, potassium, water), protein, carbohydrates, fat, saturated fat, trans fat, starch, glycemic index, fiber - these are inputs that can all be measured objectively in order to optimize nutrition. 3. Learn about blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate, body fat % - these are outputs that you can also measure objectively to evaluate your health and fitness levels. 4. If you're trying to lose fat, shoot for no more than 1 pound of weight loss per week. Based on my own experience it is difficult to lose weight faster than this and keep it off. I personally lost 2 lbs per month on average. 5. Try eating the same thing every day. This way you can easily and consistently control your calorie intake and you don't even have to count calories. If after a month you don't lose weight, you know you're eating too much, and if you gain weight, you know you're eating too much, so you simply adjust 1 or 2 meals to increase or decrease your calorie intake. Just make sure you eat a large variety of foods to ensure you get the nutrition you need to be healthy. A good way to eat a variety of foods but also eat the same thing every day is to eat 6 smaller meals instead of 2 or 3 large meals. Also make sure your meals taste good. If you try to eat "too healthy" too soon it will be difficult to do every day. 6. If you're interested in growing muscle, bodybuilding, weight lifting, etc check out www.mikementzer.com. Regardless of whether or not you agree with his bodybuilding method, he was an Objectivist and much more honest than most health / fitness experts. I found out about Objectivism from reading one of his books. 7. Try completely eliminating caffeine, alcohol and any other kind of legal / illegal drugs, pills, medicine, etc from your diet. I still can't believe how great I feel all day long every single day since I stopped consuming caffeine and alcohol. 8. Sleep! Adequate sleep is also very important for muscle growth, fat loss and health in general. I try to get 7 hours per sleep at night and if I'm tired during the day I try to take a 5-10 minute nap at lunch time.
