  1. We won't let you. For example, now I've got you surrounded.
  2. Welcome. I was brought up Catholic too, but thank God my folks were very lax. (Did I actually say "Thank God"?) Just be thankful you are living in a place called Maryland and not Jesusland.
  3. Nice to know the materials haven't gotten into the wrong hands. Wouldn't want them to be bur(n or i)ed by researchers out to prove a thesis.
  4. I don't know, Chris. I only saw it on TV. By the way, my name is actually Rodney. I use my step-grandson's name as a way of advertising him, since he's in show biz. I have started two threads about him: Crash course on Ashley Parker Angel and See Ashley on Fox's CELEBRITY MOMENTS 12/23 @ 11:30 a.m.
  5. Here is the opening titles for the movie Thoroughly Modern Millie. The song of that title is one of my very favorites. Here it is, in context: The complete song comes a bit into the sequence. It's basically a Charleston number. (I consciously wrote a tune in that style for my concert band piece Anthem, and without being told this a conductor said to the wind orchestra, "This is a great little section--it sounds like something from the 1920s." That was very gratifying! But enough about you.) "So beat the drum, 'cause here comes THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE now!"
  6. 5 Happy Birthday to you! Instead of smileys I'll give you a high five.
  7. Thanks! He's 25, and has a young son now named Lyric. He got Punk'd a while back--watchers agree it may be the best episode of all! Here's a link to the video.
  8. This article at Starpulse News Blog mentions that Ashley Parker Angel, my step-grandson, will be one of the celebrities included in the lineup of part one of Celebrity Moments, which airs on Fox on December 23 at 11:30 a.m.
  9. In England you might say, "I'll make a donation of Lenin to the National Trust."
  10. On a related note, I was Hans Selye's editor and personal assistant for two years!
  11. Yes, I noticed that one. And I don't think it's derogatory either--the point is that Pierce only likes the book because it is thick. Implication: he was expected to be appreciating it intellectually. It seems a bit forced. Not that I'm not pleased! I suspect the cartoonist likes Rand and wants to prepare ground for the upcoming movie.
  12. You forgot one: (1) Ergitandal. (2) Therefore, God exists.

Re The Monkees, I wonder how many know that "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You" was written by Neil Diamond? It's a great song. The Monkees had top-notch material offered to them. Two others that impress me as a songwriter are: "Shades of Grey" (they were thrilled to be given this masterpiece!) "Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow" (written by Neil Diamond--a gem, pun intended) I advise that you listen to the records, though, not any other version or live performance, which may not be as effective.
  14. Nowadays, it seems the one unforgivable thing is to speak the truth. Ayn Rand was so right: "It is earlier than you think." We should also keep in mind that not only is it early in the history of man, it is early in Objectivism. We all have to grit our teeth and press on against the destructive forces within as well as without.
  15. The only worse thing that could happen to you than being suspended over leprechauns would be to have leprechauns suspended over you.
  16. There's also a site somewhere where you can translate any website into "Elmer Fudd." It was amusing browsing the "Ayn Wand Institute."

I just answered my own question through Google: it was the Lovin' Spoonful in 1966 who did "Darlin' Companion" first--no surprise, since John B. Sebastian wrote it. For some reason, a company who holds the copyright has posted a "clip" of this track that consists of the whole song, save for apparently a fraction of a second at the beginning. Here's where you can hear the version of "Darlin' Companion" that I knew: http://www.carlinamerica.com/titles/titles...27&terms=Co But I enjoy Johnny Cash too, and love the clip that was posted here.

I've no time to click on most of these links. I did, however, click on: Johnny Cash & June Carter: "Darlin' Companion" Just when I think I've scared up online all the forgotten beloved records of my childhood and adolescence, something like this happens! That title, "Darlin' Companion," rang a little bell in my head--a small pleasure center in my brain where I have stored various important things. Could it be ... ? Would I like this tune--how did it go anyway? ... I love it, and what I want to know is--was it Johnny Cash who put this out in the 60s?
  19. I saw it on TV. Could he be any gayer??? (And I don't mean Steve.)

Kori, Ashley Parker Angel was on the first Making the Band on TV, and ended up as a member of the boy band O-Town. This was not the sort of music he wanted to make, but he has since said that he regards the whole experience as "the greatest foot in the door" to the business anyone could ask for, "like a college-level crash course in the music industry," and that he would do it again if he was starting out. This year, his struggle to become a solo artist was tracked on the show There & Back, which was the #1 show on MTV when it ran. His first video, to the song "Let U Go," was #1 on TRL also. So he's got a great start!

And, of course, I could hardly contribute to this thread without encouraging you all to hear the songs from his album Soundtrack to Your Life that my step-grandson Ashley Parker Angel has put up on his MySpace: I recommend especially: Crazy Beautiful (you have to ignore whatever song plays automatically and click on the title you want) and I'm Better I really like these two songs. In the case of the second one, the interest picks up considerably as the song continues, so give it a chance! You have to go here: http://www.myspace.com/ashleyparkerangel and then click on the songs I've mentioned, which are in the player at the top. His current single is "Where Did You Go?," a ballad--it's also on the site.

One of my all-time favorite recordings is "Town Without Pity" by Gene Pitney. I posted this on RebirthOfReason; perhaps more people here will enjoy it.
  23. I found it funny, because such a strip could just as well have been written by a dedicated Objectivist. The reason is that for the sake of a joke, a humorist often takes a stance he knows to be wrong, and that the audience knows he knows is wrong. It's just a temporary pose struck, as it were. Since I, the reader, do not know the views of the cartoonist, I just regard it in that way. Among friends, I am given to such playfulness myself. Am I the only one who noticed that Ayn Rand is pictured--the "GENIUS"?
  24. Just time to say hi, Amy. I too was raised Roman Catholic. There were some good things about it. Also, my folks were not very religious and became more and more non-observant.
