Please have a look at this article outlining logical abduction, a version of induction worked out by C.S. Peirce.

Abduction is closer to Newton's rules for natural philosophy than the usual enumerative induction. It is at the heart of what I would call scientific induction which is the only way we have of getting past a finite collection of facts to a set of principles, causes and explanations.

Incidentally, C.S. Peirce is probably the best American philosopher but he is highly under-appreciated.
