It seems that many of my problems were caused by a too strict setting of my firewall. Merely disabling blocking in the firewall didn't remove those restrictions, so therefore I erroneously thought at first that the firewall had nothing to do with it. I've no idea where the new settings did come from (I use it for many years already), but it happened at the same time when OL was down and did some strange things, suggesting that those problems were related. Now it seems to work fine...
