Selene
Our take on Ayn Rand, Jesus and MLKSaturday, May 30, 2009Here’s what Stiltz & Serious C think:Stirring up much debate is the verse in the Young Con Anthem:“Three thing taught me conservative love,Jesus, Ronald Reagan plus Atlas Shrugged”This comment is similar to other responses we've received from the video. Yes, we know that Ayn Rand was an atheist, however, she preached the power of the individual and personal responsibility just as Jesus and Martin Luther King Jr. We do not agree with the religious beliefs of Ayn Rand and we do not intend to force our beliefs on anyone. We also do not imply that all conservatives are Christians. Our music is merely a way for us to express our unique, conservative message.I understand why you believe Jesus' values to be liberal.. "he was weak on defense (turn the other cheek), big on social programs (give to the poor), harsh on the wealthy (nearly impossible for the rich man to enter heaven), soft on punishment (he who is without sin, cast the first stone), and pro-taxes (render unto Caesar what is his)" 1However, Jesus does not ask government to make these commitments. Rather, he requests each individual... to choose out of their free will, from their heart, and because they want to... give up the possessions which they have and "follow Him." The message we receive from Jesus is that people should “give up” their possessions. He did not claim that government institutions should force people to give their possessions. 1I hope this helps explain our point of view. We feel as though there is a difference between socialistic policies forcing people to give... and, on the other hand, charitable works. Studies show the immense charitable giving of Conservatives. We are probably just like a lot of young Americans... we want to succeed... we want other people to succeed.. we want to "follow Him."Similarly, Martin Luther King Jr. preached just as our Founding Fathers.. "all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights that among them are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." In our point of view, he emphasized the importance of personal freedom and the civic responsibility of each person. The Montgomery Bus Boycott is a great example to show his faith in the power of the individual. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to unite all Americans and "put aside their differences." These values he preached are the core of conservatism. As conservatives... we are trying to unite youth in political discussion with hopes of influencing the direction of our country.

"The Young Con Anthem," created by two Dartmouth students, has received more than 90,000 views and has made it to The Huffington Post, USA Today and a variety of blogs across the political spectrum. What's funny is that the real names of the performers sound better than the stage names."Rufful and Riddle" sounds kinda cool...Michael

Selene
Here is their web site:http://www.theyoungcons.com/Young Con Anthem ReaxPosted: 01 Jun 2009 04:47 AM PDTDartmouth freshman Tatiana Cooke reports on the reaction to the video by her classmates Josh Riddle and David Rufful that we posted here and wrote about again over the weekend. In "'Young Con Anthem' causes buzz," Tatiana quotes the head of the College Democrats asserting that the video "tragically exposes the completely irreconcilable views of modern day neoconservatism." Tatiana also quotes my somewhat more transparent comments on the video to her yesterday afternoon.PAUL adds: "tragically exposes the completely irreconcilable views of modern day neoconservatism"?!
