Jimmy Carter and the Gold Telephone

Recommended Posts

This goes back aways. Jimmy Carter paid a visit to Israeli prime-minister Menachim Begen to discuss international matters and during the conversation Pres. Carter noticed three telephones on the prime-minister's desk. A white phone, a red phone and a gold phone. Carter asked the prime-minister what the phones were: Begen explained that the white phone was for diplomatic calls, the red phone was to contact the military and the gold phone was a direct line to God. Carter told Begen that he too had a gold phone with which he could talk directly to God. Begen asked Carter how much a call on the Gold cost; Carter replied, about a billion dollars a call, which is why we don't use it too often. Carter asked Begen how much a call on his Gold phone cost. Begen replied, about a dollar, but from here it's a local call.
