O-Land News Junkie
Whether one is a fan or a detractor of Ayn Rand, the issues raised by this book are manifold and provocative. This book should force a debate of renewed vigor about what we mean by egoism, whether and how the egoism / altruism dichotomy should be applied within eudaimonistic ethical theories, and what our ethical theories imply about our political outlook. Smith provides us with a version of egoism that will need to be argued against by those who find it distasteful or misguided, rather than simply dismissed.http://randex.org/index.php/weblog/ayn_ran...irtuous_egoist/
Robert Campbell
Helen Cullyer, the author of that brief review, is going to be talking about Tara Smith's book at the Ayn Rand Society meeting (in Washington, DC, end of this month).I plan to be there, so I may be able to post my impressions later on.Robert Campbell
Michael Stuart Kelly
Robert,I moved this from the news feeds since you made a comment. Your comment would have soon been buried over there. If anyone makes a comment on a news feed, I will move it to this section.I will be interested in reading your impressions of Cullyer's talk. It is refreshing to read something from a non-ARI source about Smith's book.Michael
