Looking for like minded objectivists

Hello all, Im new to this board. I am a grad Student and currently serving in the US Navy. I have been evolving my thought over the last few years, as I found the pundits on both sides of the American political spectrum as the same, both parties wish to destroy the American dream for the sake of power. I long for the utopia that Ayn Rand writes about in Atlas Shrugged, in Galt's Gulch. But since that apparently is not possible in the socialist driven world, where one is demonized for not living a Altruistic lifestyle, I choose to withdraw and just dream of what my most beautiful world would look like. and it brings me here, since my perfect world would be filled with like minded objectivists who are not afraid to work to earn their way. Being a grad student, I have to suffer through the indignities of the "evil of Capitalism" and how Ayn Rand is mean, since she believed people should work for their way, and being rational and logical is the only way to a valid conclusion. Im just glad to be here, and I will be in and out. I hope to make some friends whom see the world, and interact with it like I do.

Mark,

Welcome aboard.

You will definitely find many good intelligent people here who are not into being parasites.

One word of caution, should you be of a certain mindset. The focus of the board is to allow people to work through their ideas out loud. This can get messy and sound like they are trying to attack Rand or whatever. But the rule here is every person speaks for himself or herself.

Nobody speaks for Objectivism or Rand.

I don't even speak for OL and I own the place (along with Kat).

:)

I only speak for my own mind.

It's surprising how well this approach allows people of different intellectual orientations and cultures to communicate without snark and tearing each other apart.

The reason I mention this is there are some people in O-Land who do not like or agree with this approach.

Regardless of how you end up on this point, I wish you well and warmly welcome you to our little community.

Michael

Hi Mark,

I hope you enjoy your visits here. You wrote:

So did I...

...and in time you may discover that nothing can prevent you from creating your own Galt's Gulch within your personal sphere of influence. One of the defining characteristics of the Gulch was the honest upright ethical value for value business transactions between the Gulchers. You already have the power to create that same atmosphere in your dealings with others. To the degree you take the high road, others who share your values will naturally interact with you because you prove yourself to be as worthy of their trust as they are of yours. Trust is the invisible glue that holds business together. To actually build a physical Galt's Gulch first requires securing your own self sufficient economic freedom. That takes time and work, and demands nothing less from you than that you become the very best man you can be.

In a perfect world one embraces but not sanctions the imperfect. You can find an honest man--look in the mirror--not a perfect one--look in the mirror.

moral choice or free will means no perfection--outside my door a dove is sitting on two eggs; she's perfect in a way I can only dream of, but at least I'm a lot more interesting except to an ornithologist

Mark, I believe there is reason to be hopeful that the world you wish for may indeed become a reality in the foreseeable future. The reason is that there is a pro individual freedom movement which we are all part of to the extent that we encourage others to discover the value of liberty.

Two organizations were begun in 2008 by a handful of likeminded young college students and both have grown in that they are on more campuses each year and their numbers of individual activists also are growing too.

www.studentsforliberty.org and www.YALiberty.org

Worth supporting.

I suggest that you could die in your hope while waiting for the world... when you can actively build your wish for yourself right now. It can't be done by a collective, only by sovereign independent individuals operating autonomously while sharing the same vision and values.

When you take action to do it for yourself... that's what earns you to the opportunity to come into contact with others who are doing the same as you are.
