Have to confess: Clancy's Jack Ryan earned his own Wikipedia entry.

Hunt for Red October was first published by the Naval Institute Press. They also published a work by a professor of mine: Ron Westrum's Sidewinder: Creative Missile Development at China Lake. You have to wonder about them.

Not a big fan of the genre, I found Clancy superlative. I suppose that it can get cloying after a while, but I never found it so. I also appreciated many of the sub-texts. The popular media focus on the accuracy of his military details and such. I was more fascinated with the people he drew, the minor characters who seemed like biographies of real people, people I might have known or known of. Fact... fiction... it can be so hard to tell them apart...

My favorite Clancy scene is from Patriot Games. Only the English can say "Really" in so many withering ways.
