In addition, the anonymity of the Internet breeds incivility of the worst sort while drowning out calmer voices. This is a poisonous atmosphere for democracy. The marketplace of ideas can work, but only when arguments are based on reason built on a solid foundation of fact. Little reason can be found in today’s debate, and each side seems to feel entitled to its own set of facts. The constant demonization of the opposition has destroyed any sense of common purpose.
