Well folks, it looks like the gig is finally up for PETA. Most of us who have vehemently opposed their psychotic agenda for years have been patient, but the new evidence of their Virginia HQ's is undeniable.

Angela, I am looking forward to your comments on this because you are a PETA member and you are a proponent of consistency in ethical behavior.

Animal lovers worldwide now have access to more than a decade's worth of evidence showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) kills thousands of defenseless pets at its Virginia headquarters. Since 1998, PETA has opted to "put down" 25,840 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding them "forever homes."

Adam,

I'll go through the links first to get the picture, and will reply in detail as soon as I can.

Adam, the issue addresed here is complex and the questions that arise from it cast light on THE core issue of every ethics discussion: what is considered as the highest value in a person's hierarchy of ethical values? Is it "life" at all costs? Is it relieving suffering? Is it is something else altoghether?

Among those values, is there a common value most individuals would agree on?

Here's PETA's perspective on the killing of the animals:

http://www.animalliberationfront.com/News/2005_8/PETAeuthanizing.htm

As for consistency in ethical behavior, this certainly is my ideal. But when I look to what extent I'm striving to come close to that ideal, I know I have a long way yet to go when it comes to my commitment to animals' rights. I do see where the gaps are though.

For example, I'm a vegetarian (ovo-lacto), and while I'm careful to buy eggs from hens which are not confined to living in too small cages, when it comes to dairy products, I simply can't claim that every dairy product I buy comes from cows kept as I would like to see them kept. So in buying the (usually cheaper) product, I practically support firms which would get the thumbs down from animal rights organizations.

So there is clearly a contradiction here (yet), between the values I hold high as an ideal and my current behavior. But I'm working at it.

As for PETA, I'm not happy with any missionary attitude on their part.

But on the other hand, who knows where the animal rights movement would be today without PETA's committment to the cause.

So again, I'm quite torn when it comes to PETA. I wish I could give you a more definite answer, but that's where I currently stand.

Animals have no rights humans are bound to acknowledge. If an animal is someone's property then the rights of the owner must be honored. If the animal is wild in a natural habitat then is has no rights. It is just there to be let alone or taken by a human who wishes to take it.

Angela:

I have read PETA's response before you posted it and it makes an adequate argument. One that I disagree with, but it is a "credible" argument that could be advanced.

Additionally, I appreciate, more than you may realize, that you are considering your relationship to PETA which is more than fair.

Rights are created by humans. So if a society decides e. g. that animals have the right to be treated non-cruelly, and this decision has found its way into the law, the citizens are obliged to abide by that law.

Angela:

Have you re-evaluated your membership yet?

“PETA hasn’t slowed down its slaughterhouse operation,” said Rick Berman, CCF’s executive director. “It appears PETA is more concerned with funding its media and advertising antics than finding suitable homes for these dogs and cats.”
In a February 16 statement, the Center said PETA killed 1,911 cats and dogs last year, finding homes for only 24 pets.

"Documents published on line this month show that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an organization known for its uncompromising animal-rights positions, killed more than 95 percent of the pets in its care in 2011."

PETA media liaison Jane Dollinger told The Daily Caller in an email that “most of the animals we take in are society’s rejects; aggressive, on death’s door, or somehow unadoptable.”

Dollinger did not dispute her organization’s sky-high euthanasia rate, but insisted PETA only kills dogs and cats because of “injury, illness, age, aggression, or because no good homes exist for them.”
PETA’s own history, however, shows that this has not always been the case.
In 2005,
two PETA employees described as “adorable” and “perfect” some of the dogs and cats they killed in the back of a PETA-owned van. The two were arrested after police witnessed them tossing the animals’ dead bodies into a North Carolina dumpster.
PETA had no comment when the Daily Caller asked what sort of effort it routinely makes to find adoptive homes for animals in its care.

It is amazing how these people live with themselves.

Pompous, effete death merchants.

I find that slaughtering 89.4% of the animals in their shelter in Virginia an unacceptable level.

The charity, well-known for attention grabbing publicity campaigns such as the 'I'd rather go naked' anti-fur campaign, euthanized 1,647 cats and dogs last year and only placed 19 in new homes according to the data submitted to the Virginia Department for Agriculture and Consumer Services.

PETA told Mail Online that the animals they take in at the center are 'unadoptable', however 89.4 per cent of pets is much higher than their own approximation that half of animals taken to shelters end up being euthanized.

My gut tells me that they could make budgetary changes wherein PETA could slaughter less and rehabilitate more. Hell, hire the "Dog Whisperer," he seems to have figured out a methodology to rehab the most severe cases.

This is a classic example of the stupidity of the Left. Especially the Hollywood celebrities who endorse PETA and appear in their commercials.

Many people think PETA is a humane orgaization that saves animals. Yeah, "saves" them in the sense of the Nazis saving the Jews!

It's amazing that PETA has been able to get away with this charade.

PETA has often used deception in its rounding-up of animals, telling other shelters and individuals that they were going to place the animals in new homes. This was never their intention.

To call PETA, an animal welfare organization, is indeed like calling Auschwitz a "re-education" camp for homeless Jews..
