With the Senate election in Georgia the Democrats will not get to 60. It is also worth noting that the results went from being a squeaker in Nov. to a landslide in Dec.

I must add the point that the Democrats could change the rules and stop filibusters completely by not requiring a super majority to end debate.

There's a saying that no good deed goes unpunished.

i have been reflection on two attempts by me to do something for some younger students of Objectivism. Both involve people who have posted in the past on OL so I am not going to mention any names.

The first happened this Summer when I attempted to provide a scholarship for a high school student to attend TAS's Summer Seminar in Portland, Oregon. I informed this person that I had sent the money into TAS and that all he had to do was apply. I checked to see if this person had done this and found that he had not. I then phoned this person to urge he submit his application and he informed med that his father had prevailed upon to do something else during this period. He said he wanted to tell me he could not go but he had never informed me. I was more than a little put out.

The next incident happened more recently after I had offered to lend to another person some Cd's from the Summer Seminar. I arrange to meet this person to give her these Cd's. We arranged to meet at 1pm but I got to the meeting place early. I then waited over an hour and half with no one showing up. I contacted the person by e-mail with no reply almost a week.

I finally must mention one other incident that involved one student who thanked all of the people list as donor to the scholarship fund with a very warm thank you notes. I must sadly note that none of the other scholarship recipients she was the only one

I dear;y hope that these incidents are not the way our new young Objectivists behave when something is done for them.

One of the cutters in Breaking Away is Dennis Quaid.

Of those four young actors he has been the most successful turning into a good leading man. He has done some very good performances in his career including his performances as Doc Holliday in Costner's Wyatt Earp and the astronaut Gordon Cooper in "The Right Stuff". He does a good job in the remake of "Yours, Mine and Ours".

    I watched this movie recently.

It is a movie that uses a real sporting event. In this case the Little 500 a bicycle race run in Bloomington, Indiana.

It concerns four local young men who are not going on to college and have not joined the work day world. One is very into bicycle racing. After various events they enter the Little 500 and win.

They probably would in real life get terribly beaten but it is still a fun movie worth watching.

This is a movie I have seen several times but I can always watch it again.

It is the story of the deliberation of a jury in first degree murder case. One juror played by Henry Fonda votes not guilty. The movie show the changing of the minds of the other eleven jury members.

The cast which is headed by Fonda who is strongly supported by the players of all eleven other jurors. The lead opposing juror is played Lee J Cobb but he is strongly supported by E G Marshall early in his career. The most under rated actor is man named Joseph Sweeney who plays the oldest juror and the first one to change his mind. The Sweeney character spots a fatal flaw in one very important prosecution witness which leads to the changing of the mind of the E G Marshall character.

Twelve Angry Men is a movie worth seeing many times.

I didn't know Larry Schrest. I had until a few months had not even heard of him. He was an Austrian economist. You can read more about him on the MisesBlog.

My reason for mentioning him is that at his death he was the same age as my younger brother, Ben. His death for people my brother's age and older is that the end of life is coming. For some fast and for others slow but it is coming.

A few words about the acting in 13 Days.

Bruce Greenwood is excellent as President Kennedy. He has the tone and look of the President. Stephan Kulp is wonderful as Robert Kennedy. Kulp is very under appreciated actor. Kevin Costner is just a star to sell the movie. He adds very little to it.

This movie is an account of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The crisis last the thirteen days in the title.

This is well done movie. Good acting, script, and cinematography are all very much in evidence. It is wonderful to see the history of our time accurately displayed.

The script is taken from Robert Kennedy's account of the crisis. The US late in October of 1962 discovered the Soviet Union was placing medium range missile into Cuba contrary to their promise. The original plans were take out the missile sites by bombing to be followed by an invasion. The idea of a blockade against Cuba was also suggested.

I will have more in a farther post.

While I was disappointed in the Maverick I watched I was reminded that this was the show that introduced us to James Garner.

James Garner is a good but underrated actor. He keeps making good movies showing a good range. I hope he begins to get the praise he deserves.

I have not watched this show since it was on in the late 50ths.

I found it very disappointing. The irreverence and wit I remembered were gone. I guess you can't go home again and sometimes you shouldn't.

Yesterday Rev. Bevel was sentenced to a long prison term(15 years) for having sex with one of his daughters.

Rev Bevel marched along side Martin Luther King Jr during the early and late 60ths. I don't know if he was Memphis at the time of King's death but he was probably not far away.

The story in today's(Oct. 16, 2008) Washington Post suggested that Rev. Bevel had sex with more than one of his daughters. This sounds both sad and sick

Rev. Bevel is probably going to die in prison.

Bevel during the 90ths became involved with Lyndon LaRouche who is one of America's biggest political mountebanks. I thought at the time that Rev. Bevel could not go any lower. I was wrong.

Yesterday Canada had an election. The Conservatives won but with a minority government.

Canada is badly divided. I don't think any of the three major parties is a national party. The third largest party hold seats in only one providence. Stephan Harper is an attractive man and I hope he can bring a good head to his country's leadership.

Most of the better articles in the Objectivist Newsletter were reprinted in the essay collections.

One article that was not was Miss Rand's article after the Goldwater defeat "It's Earlier than You Think". It is worth reading or rereading for anyone into political action. I would recommend it to supporters of Ron Paul and the Libertarian Party.

Acorn is registering voters. It has been discovered that some of these registered voters are dead.

I think Conservatives and Burkeans should be pleased. Edmund Burke believed that society included both the living and the dead and even those who were not born. Acorn has just put this practice into effect.

I got this book with an order I made from the Ayn Rand Bookstore.

This is a book that you wonder why it was published. They are notes Ayn Rand made in various books in her personal library. While such comments maybe on interest to scholars they are not have as much interest for the layman. The books also suggests that Miss Rand was not well read.

There has been discussions because some of her comments about Ludwig Von Mises are very strong. I think these comments were not really intended for others which is another reason this book should not have been published.

I also got this book from the Ayn Rand Bookstore.

The Ayn Rand Letter was the last publication Ayn Rand was associated with personally. It sadly suggests she was losing her great power. When it was first published Ayn Rand talked about reaching a wider audience but at the end she was preaching to the choir.

Some of the material is very good but I think all-in-all there was lots better material in the Objectivist and Objectivist Newsletter.

O J has been found guilty. It's armed robbery but he maybe in prison for the rest of his life. The events related to the original murders.

It's going to interesting to see how it all plays out.

Tom Lahr has been referred to on OL proper.

Tom Lahr was a singer and satirist during the early part of the 1960ths. He had a song called the Vatican Rag. His song about Wehar Von Braun has been referred to on OL.

As his regular day job he taught higher mathematics at Harvard.
