Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

This sounds like a joke.

But the Nobel Peace Prize has been a joke for some time. A man who has been President for less than a year. The Nobel committee has sallowed Obama's swill whole.

I initially assumed it to be a hoax, but have now received too many notifications from news agencies to stay in denial...

Every time I think I understand the superficiality of the media and many other modern institutions, something like this comes along to tell me that it is much worse than I thought.

If I recall the thinking of the Nobel judges, this is not out of character.

I believe this was a gesture towards the USA because of finally settling the slavery issue, i.e., a black man managed to break through to the top leadership position. This point actually was like turning a page in history.

Then there is another issue. The European view of America includes a dash of bully in the mix. President Obama projects anything but being a bully in foreign policy.

And of course, he all-but-groveled before European nations on his tours...

'Submission' seems to be the new word for 'peace', huh... [how Islamic, huh]

So, Barack Obama joins Yasser Arafat as Nobel Peace Prize winner. I guess the Nobel committee didn't notice Honduras. Or maybe the committee members don't care.

I long ago gave up on the objectivity of the Nobel Prize committee. As far as I am concerned the Nobel Peace Prize is a joke. But, it angers me that they made the announcement just as the American health care system takeover legislation approaches a vote. It may very well be an attempt by the Nobel committee to impose its leftist agenda on the United States. I have a hard time believing the timing is a coincidence.

I have never been more concerned about the future of the United States. The enemies of freedom are winning and we may all pay a heavy price. What kind of world will my children inherit? I'm just not sure any more.

Lord Obama wins the no ball prize. It is appropriate.

What can I say about the decision of the Nobel committee. Its dynamite.

Hi Folks,

I just sent the following letter to the Nobel Prize organization at: comments@nobelprize.org

To the Nobel Peace Prize Committee:

I am thoroughly disgusted with your choice of President Barack Obama to be the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize recipient. So far, he has accomplished nothing and both his views and actions are clearly antithetical to the cause of freedom and peace throughout the world.

Perhaps the Nobel committee is unaware of the situation in Honduras in which the power hungry President, Manuel Zelaya was attempting to create a left-wing dictatorship when he was constitutionally removed from power. Perhaps the committee does not know that President Obama has sided with the would be dictator against the free people of Honduras.

Perhaps the Nobel committee is unaware that President Obama and leftists in the U.S. Congress are attempting to take control of the medical system in the United States and deny patients, doctors, and insurance companies the right to freely engage in mutually beneficial relationships. Perhaps the committee is unaware that such interference will lead to unnecessary suffering and death of patients in the U.S. and in other countries that depend upon American leadership in the development of new drugs and treatments.

Perhaps the Nobel committee is unaware that President Obama's policies of appeasement and unconditional engagement of dictators and tyrants throughout the world is likely to lead to more war and death in the future.

Perhaps the Nobel committee is unaware of a lot of things. But, it is more likely in my view that the Nobel Prize committee is simply promoting its leftist, socialist, communist agenda as it always has. Looking at past recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, such as Jimmy Carter, Yasser Arafat, and Al Gore, it is clear that the Nobel committee does not promote freedom or peace, for peace is impossible without freedom. Only the banishment of force from human relations can make peace possible.

The continued use of the Nobel Peace Prize [sic] to promote left-wing causes does nothing but to tarnish the name of Nobel. I think that if I were to receive a Nobel Prize in physics or chemistry or any other legitimate field, I would refuse to accept it out of disgust with the Nobel committee concerning the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize. I hope you will consider future decisions more carefully or consider discontinuing the Peace Prize entirely.

I just heard an offhand comment that made perfect sense to me.

This is lobbying.

The Nobel folks are lobbying Obama to change the course of the USA toward their vision (or better, keep to that course since he is already on it).

Previous USA Presidents who have received this prize are Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson while sitting, and Jimmy Carter after he left office.

Progressive (liberal) politics, anyone?

I hadn't thought of this, but you're right. This is nothing more than affirmative action, giving a reward to the underserved.

Yep that would be correct, I would suggest "progressive statist politics" which would include the Bush blunders like "no child left behind with a mind program" and "free" medical candy for the seasoned citizens, etc.

Oh, this just came over the wires, Michael, the Commissioner of baseball declared the Chicago White Sox the winners of the 2009 World Series because they hoped they would win and they tried.

There is a positive side to this. In my cynicism, I assumed the mainstream press, the liberals, other countries, the elites would simply praise this as well-deserved.

They haven't, by and large. Even the strongest Obama supporters and all the rest have been with few exceptions shocked. It's too soon. What has he done? It's political. The word that I've seen used the most often has been "embarassing".

Liberals and elite opinion is not widely dishonest. They may often be unperceptive or brainwashed. But they will call an obvious cowflap a cowflap.

A cynic is a humanist with experience.

"Liberals and elite opinion is not widely dishonest."

This is a fatal error, my friend. I have been in the same room with some of these people and they bought the fact that I was an ally because we were hired to run the field campaign. The media was being done by Dave Garth, who was the media guru/campaign consultant who basically was "the man".

"And yet, oddly enough, Dinkins is still the favorite, largely for lack of an attractive alternative. Giuliani's chances are better this time, however, and not only because the PRs are more favorably inclined. The big difference is campaign staff. The 1989 Giuliani campaign was a technical disaster, with Giuliani coming across as both mean and wooden. This year, Rudi has hired as his manager the legendary Grand Old Man of political consultants, who virtually pioneered this profession, Little Napoleon David Garth. Garth, who has been around since the 1950s, has won five out of seven mayoral campaigns. Garth's first step was to "humanize" Rudi as much as possible, in the process changing his severe hairdo which had tried unsuccessfully to cover up his bald area."

Fascinating, I found this from a 1993 article by Murray Rothbard, lol. 69.gif

At any rate, these "liberals" know exactly what they are doing.

Great letter, Darrell....

But unfortunately, the Nobel Peace Prize awarding committee members are aware of all those issues that you so eloquently mentioned. That was no mistake, that was cold calculation on their part, to further their (and Obama's) collectivist agenda.

The only reason that people pay attention to their choices is that the MSM continually hype the Nobel Prize as if it was the ultimate proof of superior achievement. Too bad that Russia no longer has the Lenin Peace Prize. Then they could combine the two.

This was rather surprising news... for a brief moment. That initial surprise settled into a more permanent amusement. Does anyone of any significance take the Nobel Prize seriously any more?

Like with the Oscars, there’s brand name recognition. But now where does Obama go from here? In terms of honors, the sort of thing Rand wrote about in “The Monument Builders”?

The Swedes have shot their wad as far as influencing U.S. policy, its like a hot model jumping in the sack with you BEFORE the first date. Next, watch China send over a dragoon of Pandas. To thank Obama for...

I agree that it was probably wasted effort. For a brief moment, I had hoped that, perhaps, I could encourage a letter writing campaign that might crash the website of the Nobel organization.

I also submitted my letter as an open letter to the local newspaper. But they probably won't publish it. I did leave it as a comment on the Townhall website, so some people probably saw it.

The problem with the Nobel Peace Prize is that it does have some credibility because of its association with the Nobel Prizes in scientific fields which are considered high honors. It's difficult for people who don't follow politics very carefully to separate the various kinds of prizes in their minds. If that were not the case, there wouldn't be so much discussion of the prize in the media.

Considering the list of people that have received the prize in the past, it is clear that the Peace Prize is a sort of booby prize. I wouldn't want to be associated with Yasser Arafat, even if I were a liberal. And not being a liberal, I wouldn't want to be associated with Jimmy Carter or Al Gore either. I don't know enough about Kissinger to know if I'd want to be associated with him --- seems like he followed a pretty cynical foreign policy. Wouldn't want to be associated with Mother Theresa either, though she is sort of an innocuous recipient by comparison.

I like the idea of awarding Obama the Lenin Peace Prize. Too bad it's not still around --- though I'm glad the USSR is gone.

I think the fact that the Nobel Prizes in science are highly respected gives the Nobel Peace Prize more credibility than it deserves. In my mind, the Nobel Peace Prize is sort of a booby prize.
