  1. Michael, The year was 1968. I was in the Army, stationed in Yokohama. A friend there had an extra ticket to see Astrud perform at a military club in Tokyo. When I entered the club I saw Astrud, with a band member, behind a table signing autographs. It was a short line so I got in it. I presented my ticket stub to Astrud and said hello. She smiled and told the person with her that "this one looks like Paul McCartney". I stayed for the entire show. She sang exactly like her recordings...soft and sweet. I liked the bossa nova sound and discovered Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66. I still, on occasion, play some of Astruds and Sergios cds. Astrud died recently, June 5, 2023. Sergio is alive and 83 yrs old.
  2. Michael, Had NB not had his affair with AR and kept expanding the NB Institute, one can only wonder how much further Objectivism would have gone.
  3. Nathaniel Branden was born on this day in 1930. I enjoyed his articles in the Objectivist Newsletter and read 2 of his books... The Psychology of Self Esteem and Breaking Free.
  4. Some of the omitted material from the interview. Interesting. https://www.atlassociety.org/post/the-lost-parts-of-ayn-rands-playboy-interview
  5. In March, 1964, Playboy magazine published their interview with Ayn Rand. Here it is in its entirety: http://www.proctors.com.au/MRhomepage.nsf/985f14ab922be306482577d5003a2040/e090930ad6c1e4bb4825789c002a8e9b/$FILE/AR interview with Playboy 1964.pdf
  6. Problem solved...I'll use the Safari browser...that works.
  7. Hello Michael When attempting to open the link I get a "Firefox can't open this file" message. I'm using MacIntosh Catalina. Any suggestions? _Joe
  8. "Thanksgiving is a typically American holiday. In spite of its religious form (giving thanks to God for a good harvest), its essential, secular meaning is a celebration of successful production. It is a producers’ holiday. The lavish meal is a symbol of the fact that abundant consumption is the result and reward of production. Abundance is (or was and ought to be) America’s pride—just as it is the pride of American parents that their children need never know starvation" --Ayn Rand
  9. Pence seemed obsessed with his religion and his unyielding financial support for the Ukraine. I happy to see him fade into unimportance.
  10. I also support Mark on many of his takes. It's his religious beliefs that I don't agree with. AR was right when she said conservatives don't know how to promote capitalism...that it needs to be advocated on moral grounds. Sure it's the most prosperous system & it's argued in that vein, but it is the only system (laissez-faire capitalism) that recognizes and supports individual/ property rights. What we have now, of course, is a mixture of freedoms and controls. A couple of years ago I was listening to his radio program and a listener called in to ask him why he doesn't bring up Ayn Rand. His reply was he does on occasion and said when she's right she's right on. He didn't get specific. I've never seen any of AR's quotes in any of the books he's written that I've looked at.
  11. Michael, I'm not Byrne and never heard of him before. He did write the other 2 articles. I suspect he may know Yarron Brook, since he quotes him quite a bit. I'm surprised Fox, who are leaning left day by day, permits favorable articles on AR. What's your take on it? --Joe P.S, you probably don't remember but I'm the one who initially suggested you have a "Horror File" section a bunch of yrs ago.
