Why do they risk Inhaling glue, etc, ANYTHING in order to not have to bear up under their normal mental state? That is the real question, in my book. What's so bad about just staying clean and dry in the first place, hmm? Why do so many people feel "driven" to alter their mental state, most of them in any way they can, at literally the risk of their minds and lives? Sheesh.

You reminded me of a saying by former Brazilian President Janio Quadros (the crazy one who provoked the military takeover in the 60's). He was known as a lush, but also as an expert on the Portuguese language and extremely well-read and intelligent.

This saying is on record, too, I think it's even on video somewhere.

John, you seem to know a lot, but why do you suppose we don't know that you are generally pissed off? On this particular thread you seem, however, to know only a little about a lot. There are many other threads you are pontificating on; I've tended to stop reading them. When I know more than the lecturer about drug abuse, I walk out, for instance. There are a few on OL who blab on and off about things they really know not, but they have the grace not to inhabit 20-30 threads with it. Right now, for me, you are only worth reading on financial matters, where you seem to be most excellent. I may, therefore, be missing a lot of good stuff, but I've not time to be, essentially, talked down to.

too bad. I'm quite as well informed in many fields, actually. You should see me write about guns, shooting, karate, survivalism, backpacking, cheap living, etc. :-) As Walter Brennan used to say:"No brag, just fact". I'll get no answers to the original question because there are no answers that they can admit to in public, much less here at OL. Weakness, man, inability to cowboy up and perform like a human being. We have it 100 times easier than our forebears in the Dark Ages, and people just stood up to it, like the real men and women that they were, that's all. today, nobody has to do anything, so there's no real feeling of accomplishment for many. As Nat has said, some break weak easily, others stand up under horrific pressures. There seems to be no real ryhme or reason as to who does what.

I once suffered a horrible, smashing blow to my big toe, cut badly, chunk of bone gone. I was unable to pay for a $1.60 bottle of peroxide to clean the gouge, so I just poured boiling water thru the wound, for 3 days, until a friend gave me $5, without my asking. It never occurred to me to ask, nor to steal the peroxide, or ask the little store's owner to let me pay later. I had no car or bicycle, could barely stand to pull a sock over it. Had to wear the "torn out" shoe, with the hole enlarged, so as to have no pressure on the wound. Never occurred to me to ask for a ride, or any help at all. Just put up with the pain until it healed. No big deal,really, but I bet that such a wound would rended 90+% of today's wussies a complete mess on the floor.

My favorite trivia answer about Brennan was how he got the whistle and raspiness in his voice...

According to the National Cowboy Museum, Brennan "lost half of his teeth in a World War I gas accident and lost the remaining ones in an early movie accident" -- which gave his voice its distinctive whistle... Brennan owned a large cattle ranch near Joseph, Oregon... It's true: Brennan won three of the first five Oscars given for supporting actor. He was also nominated in year six for Sergeant York (1941) but did not win and was never nominated again. He and Jack Nicholson are the only men to win three acting Oscars.
