~ Background is the little-aware-by-most specialized Search-and-Rescue segment of our national Coast Guard. A 'rivalry' 'twixt the official Navy and the C-G is occasionally stressed (as in all military rivalry movies re who-thinks-who's-group-is-'best'...ergo with macho-hostility being part of the 'friendly' rivalry. - Costner had a traumatic S&R situation, grudgingly accepted a 'teacher' position (or...ELSE!), and found his next class to include a 'perfectionist' (uh, like him) who was an Ivy-League grant-athlete (in swimming) and a real 'record-beater' oriented student. Costner had a 'top'-record of several things, especially saving lives, but, the latter was 'unofficial.' A good part of the story has to do with his view of that record and how he answers the question "How many?" That each has difficulty in establishing/keeping 'relationships' is a bona-fide part of the story, but, this is not really a 'date-flick.' Still, it was worth catching.
