gio Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 In a French lecture-debate I listened to on Ayn Rand (and which was rather hostile to her, on the whole) someone at one point alluded to the NBI tapes. He said he has listened to these tapes and says this (translation from French is mine): Quote This was the first time I had heard anything about children. (...) It's an example like a personal development cult. It's about: How to become a good Objectivist, a "good human being." There's a child writing to his mother from summer camp. It’s explained that he loves his mother, etc. And then Nathaniel Branden, or I don’t remember who, says: You see, this guy will never be a good Objectivist, he’s attached to his mother, his love for her chains him down. Does this ring a bell to you? I would like to find the original passage. Thank you.
Michael Stuart Kelly Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 Gio, I cannot imagine Nathaniel Branden saying that about a child. Ever. Nor can I imagine anyone in Rand's inner circle back then saying it. I have seen idiots on forums and Facebook, etc., say crazy things like that and say they are practicing Objectivism. But the crazies are generally nobodies in O-Land. If you want to consult the audio files of NB's Basic Principles of Objectivism, they are being sold here. Also, a ten minute excerpt of each lecture is on YouTube here: And a book of transcripts from these lectures is on Amazon here (referral): It's a Kindle book and not expensive. So you should be able to search it easily. To look for anything else, I would need more context. I can say with 100% certainty that I do not recall anyone important in O-Land ever saying anything like that. To speculate, I imagine someone took words out of context somewhere and ran with them with a different meaning--an agenda-driven meaning--they ascribe to them. That happens a lot and not just in O-Land. Michael

I knew Nathaniel and he never said anything so stupid. If you can reference it please do. --Brant At least I never heard it much less read anything remotely like it.
