BaalChatzaf
Here is an article on the steady population decline of Russia. http://www.worldaffairsjournal.org/article/drunken-nation-russia’s-depopulation-bomb The use and abuse of alcohol is playing a definite role in the depopulation of Russia. RobinReborn
So a country run by Authoritarian Autocrats has it's population decline? Somehow I'm not surprised.

Do you think the one child policy had no effect? Dying is probably too strong of a word but their population would have grown much more if their government were different. In China the population is not growing as fast as it might have under other circumstances. In Russia the population is shrinking.
Brant Gaede
The basic culture of China, unlike Russia, is not thuggery in spite of the now dead Chinese totalitarians and the horrible things they did. Today's autocrats are barely hanging on to state and military and other power. --Brant

Then comes the population that can take care of itself. All else being equal, the 21st Century will be the American just like the 20th was for our demographics are much stronger than Europe's, Japan's or China's. India is a wild card, but the bureaucracy is too economically destructive. It's better than Egypt's, which says nothing much. --Brant
