BaalChatzaf
Why are the Olympic Games currently being held in Rio referred to as "the summer games"? Rio is 22 + degrees south of the equator and from June 20 to September 20 the season is winter.
turkeyfoot
Have you ever played baseball in the winter? Or golf? Summer games, ie; track and field, swimming, beach volleyball. Winter games, ie; skiing, cross country, luge. Winter games require snow. The coldest average temperature in Rio is 70 in July Why are elderly who leave the norths winters, for Florida, called snow birds?.) Why does a rolling stone gather no moss? Papa Was a Rolling Stone, why isnt Mick Jagger?

You are referring to weather and climate. I am referring to season. So we have the Olympic Games held during the Winter Season being called the Summer Games. Strange...... turkeyfoot
Interesting. But you asked. Ive played sports all my life. Ive not looked at it in that way. Whats more strange is holding winter olympics in Sochi's sub tropical climate. Average temps are 52 in the winter. The Russians collected 710 cubic meters from previous years winters for the events. Or holding World Cup Soccer events in Saudi Arabia where the day time temps are 120 where play has to be conducted in air conditioned stadiums built on the backs of slaves. The ideas of the International Olympic committee is to give the worlds countries an opportunity to hold games. The only trouble in Rio seems to be the Zika virus and an occasional body washing up on the beach. Im looking for swimmer Phelps and gymnast Simone Biles who Bella Karolli called the best gymnast of all time. Btw, an interesting story in regard to Karolli and the former gymnast Dominique Moceanu. http://www.hbo.com/real-sports-with-bryant-gumbel/episodes/0/189-episode/video/189-dominique-moceanu.html
