Brant,

Not to people whose God is falsification.

It goes something like this. The way you and I see it, we use reason.

The way these falsification guys see it, reason uses us. Hell, they aren't sure "we" even exist except as an assumption dictated by reason.

And the thing is, reason in that sense is another name for God. You will find (as you are finding) they are some of the most religious people in all humanity. For them, man proposes and God disposes...

:)

Michael

Well, man proposes and reality disposes, aka reality congruence or its lack.

logic the form of understanding our very physical brains use.  It is an effect of the operation of our physical brains.  Language is also such a thing.  Birds fly and we speak and make logical inferences.  All of the effects and operations ultimately are the result of physical processes.

Your mind at work.

I doubt that. Most people other than aspies are poor at logic. Most people who are good at logic are specially trained in logic. Logic does not seem to come naturally to most humans other than aspies. If it did we would be computers or vulcans.

The brain seems to be a pattern machine, both recognizing patterns and creating patterns. This is how we recognize faces and a voice on the phone and the letter A in different fonts and sizes and colors and positions. The brain can do logic like a wrench can be used as a hammer.

1st workman:  Give me a wrench.

2nd workman:  What kind of wrench?

1st workman:  Don't matter. I'm going to use it for a hammer.

The brain evolved for survival, not to be a computer. The brain can, especially with training, do logic like a wrench can drive a nail.

Logic is an epiphenomena of language.  The same neural circuits that support parsing and utterance also do logic.

Humans,  for primarily genetic reasons,  are the blabbermouth primate.  Our linguistic proclivities are the product of our genome.  Other primates communicate as do cetecians and even some birds,  but humans are blabbermouths  and can talk about things that are not present during the the conversation.

My very capable brain at work.  You have a mind.  I have a brain that works rather well.  I even have  8 MRI and PET scan images of my brain (made 10 years ago).  Do you have any images of your mind?

You admit I have a mind, another word for consciousness. Do you have images of your consciousness?

I am just being polite. Arguing about the (objective)  existence of mind is like arguing about the existence of the gods.  I am in no position to deny that you have a mind.   I do not have enough physical evidence to do so.

Do you have consciousness? I believe I do and it's reducible to physicality. That's my mindset. The beauty of language is the multiplicity of words available for conversation. When you see a great building why keep looking at the foundation as if that's all there is? How did you get the job as a tour guide?

There is a Rabbinical saying:  Derech eretz kadmat l'Torah    Good Manners  precede God's Laws.
