Michael Stuart Kelly
Van Jones on the Social Injustice of Plastic at TEDGlenn Beck regularly mentions Van Jones as someone on the left to keep an eye on. He has especially focused on one quote Van Jones made about a top down, bottom up and inside out strategy of provoking social change. It goes something like this:Bottom Up = Strikes and riotsInside Out = People clamoring for it all to stopTop Down = Government power expandsThis is an oversimplification, but it is a pretty good gist.At any rate, I was astounded to see Van Jones featured on TED Talks. Especially in such a boneheaded theme as the one he was preaching: we should all give up plastic since--according to him--cheap plastic makes poor folks sick.Seriously.You have to hear it to believe that someone would promote this crap. But Beck is right about Van Jones. He's a hell of a good speaker. And that makes him persuasive. And dangerous.<object width="446" height="326"><param name="movie" value="http://video.ted.com/assets/player/swf/EmbedPlayer.swf"></param><param'>http://video.ted.com/assets/player/swf/EmbedPlayer.swf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"/><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><param name="bgColor" value="#ffffff"></param> <param name="flashvars" value="vu=http://video.ted.com/talks/dynamic/VanJones_2010X-medium.flv&su=http://images.ted.com/images/ted/tedindex/embed-posters/VanJones-2010X.embed_thumbnail.jpg&vw=432&vh=240&ap=0&ti=1056&introDuration=15330&adDuration=4000&postAdDuration=830&adKeys=talk=van_jones_the_economic_injustice_of_plastic;year=2010;theme=a_greener_future;theme=a_taste_of_tedx;theme=new_on_ted_com;event=TEDxGreatPacificGarbagePatch;&preAdTag=tconf.ted/embed;tile=1;sz=512x288;" /><embed src="http://video.ted.com/assets/player/swf/EmbedPlayer.swf" pluginspace="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" bgColor="#ffffff" width="446" height="326" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" flashvars="vu=http://video.ted.com/talks/dynamic/VanJones_2010X-medium.flv&su=http://images.ted.com/images/ted/tedindex/embed-posters/VanJones-2010X.embed_thumbnail.jpg&vw=432&vh=240&ap=0&ti=1056&introDuration=15330&adDuration=4000&postAdDuration=830&adKeys=talk=van_jones_the_economic_injustice_of_plastic;year=2010;theme=a_greener_future;theme=a_taste_of_tedx;theme=new_on_ted_com;event=TEDxGreatPacificGarbagePatch;"></embed></object>If I can stomach another viewing of this, I might comment on some of the persuasion techniques.Michael
Robert Campbell
Michael,Yikes!Jones is one slick speaker. At various points he asserts obvious untruths; at others, he traffics in half-truths; for long stretches, he slides right along fact-free.I can see that the Obama White House misses him. There's an obvious conflict between the "progressives'" claim to be looking out for poor people and their embrace of environmentalism. Cap and trade and other suppressive measures appeal primarily to the folks Joel Kotkin calls "gentry liberals." But even though hardly any of the voters who elect and reelect them stand to benefit from the regulations for which the environmentalist lobby clamors, every member of the Congressional Black Caucus supports them.Jones is able to make it appear that the gulf has been bridged. I don't know whether his pitch would go over nearly so well in South Central LA as it did in Santa Monica, but if anyone can deliver it successfully in South Central LA, Jones is the guy.Robert Campbell
