  1. Villains are more interesting because the generate conflict, which is the essence of drama. They have wider freedom of action, and they are less likely to be hampered by conventional restraints. If the villain is motivated by some better motive than sheer malice, beastliness, or petty greed, the conflicts generated can be fascinating.

One of the best dramatic characters of all time is Scorpius in the series Farscape, for just those reasons. Scorpius is the monstrous offspring of a woman who was raped by a Scarran, a predatory alien race intent on conquering the galaxy. He is the enemy of John Crichton, the series' protagonist, who has some knowledge of how to create and control a spatial wormhole, which could be used for travel or as a weapon. Scorpius first appears to be a typical power hungry sadist, but we learn the reasons for his vampirical appearance and his ruthlessness in looking for a weapon against the Scarrans as the series progresses. Here is a dramatic clip of the destruction of Scorpius' "deathstar" research vessel and an encounter between Scorpius and Crichton as the ship implodes.

  2. Well, that seemed to be what you were saying, Ted. You seemed to be suggesting that Lindsay should dumb things down for his audience, but I know from personal experience that Lindsay gained a large following in New Zealand without ever once doing that. In fact he'd do just the opposite; challenge people to raise themselves up. Anyway, thanks for the support in the face of Michaels post.

By audience in my comment I meant people who see him on YouTube. Regardless of my opinion of him as a person, I have no hope that Perigo fail.

  3. Richard,

I suspect you are happy innocent people got murdered.

    It helps your spread hatred.

Just like with Israel, I don't think you give a damn about any of this unless it can be a prop for your agenda.

    Michael

BTW, this is one of the most offensive things that has ever been said to me.

I agree. Whatever Michael's personal connections to certain Muslims he should be able to accept criticisms of Islam in good faith. His attributions of evil motives to you are made without evidence outside his emotions. As, ironically, was your accusation against me of looking down on New Zealanders for criticizing Perigo.

  4. I actually make an argument in the last three paragraphs. Try addressing it. My quoting of the sword verse was only to demonstrate that such things can be pulled out of context, and that such a practice is useless, such is the meaning of "isn't going to convince anyone".

So your point is that anyone who justifies violence by the words of the child rapist can only do so by taking his words out of context?

You still have not explained how criticizing voluntarily held evil beliefs amounts to bigotry.

  5. He is definitely saying headquarters.

Note that the standard vowel [ɛ] of head is typically raised toward the [ɪ] of hid in the New Zealand dialect. The pure sound [e] of French été, Spanish bebe and German geht lies between the sounds [ɛ] and [ɪ]. (See the chart above.) And in standard British and American English, the long /e/ of hate is pronounced [eɪ] with the /e/ sound gliding off into a 'y' like sound - a combination called a diphthong. Perigo doesn't raise his "head" all the way to "hid", but he does produce an intermediate vowel which sounds between the two. The following /d/ also has the effect of lengthening the vowel. All of this makes it sound like the vowel in hate.

As far as his consonant, Perigo does use a /d/ and not a /t/, but this sounds odd to Americans, because we actually say /hegkwarders/ and his clearly enunciated /d/ sounds closer to a /t/ to us because of it.

All this may go to show why my first comment on this thread was "what beautiful consonants - what godawful vowels."

  6. I lost the thread when he talked about somebody's "hatequarters"

Don't forget "goblinism". Ugh, he has his own lingo. And it sounds as bad as it reads.

Actually I just thought it was the way he pronounced headquarters. Has he written hatequarters on SOLO? If not I want to trademark it and make everybody use it and pay me for using it.I'll give you a discount rate.

The open /e/ sound of dead and mess is raised to the open /i/ sound of did and miss. So, if he is just speaking with an accent, rather than intentionally engaging in wordplay, headquarters should sound like hidquarters, not hatequarters. If someone wants to give me the time index I'll listen to him, but I am not going to listen to the whole damn thing again.

  7. At Least 12 Killed During Koran-Burning Protest at UN Office in Afghanistan

April 1: Afghans carry a man who was wounded following an attack on UN's office during a demonstration to condemn the burning of a copy of the Muslim holy book by a Florida pastor, in Mazar-i- Sharif north of Kabul, Afghanistan. An Afghan official says seven people have been killed at a U.N. office in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif when a Koran-burning protest turned violent. (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan — Demonstrators incensed at the burning of a Koran by a Florida pastor opened fire on a United Nations office Friday in northern Afghanistan, killing 12 people, including three foreign UN workers and five Nepalese UN guards, officials said.

Two of the foreign dead reportedly were beheaded, Reuters reported.

  8. > Then PERIGO! was even worse. The episode assumes far too much on the part of its audience. [Ted]

Like what and how often? In the introductory part, he explained about the Greeks and about Aristotle, about the painting behind him, and most semi-educated people have heard about post-modernism and political correctness. And, I presume, New Zealanders know about the political figures he was referring to.

Ted obviously thinks that New Zealanders are too dumb to get it. They are not smart objectivists like he his. I don't actually see him with his own tv show though, so who's actually doing more to take Objectivism to the world at large? And all he, and lots of others here, can do, is knock it. Letting personal bias get in the way is hardly objective.

    Obviously.

  9. Um, the Church Militant is an active concept today, though the militancy has gone from literal to metaphorical, as has jihad in the lives of the majority of Muslims. Salvation Army anybody?

What two hundred years? Christians killed non-Christians, principally Jews, enthusiastically under the Inquisition until around the 1600s, to give them the benefit of a few years.Like Muslims they reserved the worst ferocities for apostates and heretics after that (the Thirty Years War etc) all urged on by preachers or priests who had the Bible memorized.

Christianity is now over 2000 years old. For the record, I am a Christian.

What I wanted is to be shown how those historical events are tied to Jesus saying I come not to bring peace, but a sword. If Christianity is indeed militant at heart, then it will always be militant at heart, no matter how far it's followers, including you, might stray, they'll always be under threat of being called back to its heart. So, how do you make the link between Jesus's comments and the Crusades, opposed to the Crusades being a response to imperialist Islam?

Those comments were USED to help start the Crusades. Medieval clerics were not in the habit of explicating Bible texts to their flocks. They told them what God wanted them to do. When Urban II ignited the Crusades at Clermont in 1095, he came "as a herald of Christ" to urge an eradication of the Muslims from "the lands of our friends" and liberate the holy places from the infidel. He promised they would be doing Christ's work and earn remission from their sins, and go to Paradise if they died fighting.

    Sound familiar?

So your point is that because some long dead Christians justified reconquering previously Christian land from the Muslims (who themselves conquered by force from the Christians, following the words of their prophet who explicitly preached war and the murder of non-believers) in contravention of the teachings of their own messiah, that Gert Wilders is a bigot for holding that one can meaningfully distinguish between the explicit teachings of the two religious figures?

I don't know or care if Wilders is a bigot. The religious leaders, as you point out, are long dead, and to view the actions of their billions of followers through the narrow prism of the words those leaders said or wrote alone, instead of the layered centuries of thought, non-thought, knowable and unknowable circumstance, is unproductive of anything except further dissension.

I am glad you admit, along with Wilders, that the explicit teaching of Muhammad is evil, and that those who follow his literal exhortations are a threat worth focusing upon. I am not sure, however, which exhortations of Jesus you find less threatening due to the fact that he too is dead.

  11. You begin with the assumption that he's a bigot and prove it by repeating the charge - not showing where he is prejudiced against people for matters over which they have no choice. Islam is not a genetic condition.

I don't follow, you're accusing me of circular reasoning? I don't see it. As to Islam not being a genetic condition, I'm flabbergasted that you'd write that. Of course it's not genetic, but one certainly is born to it (or not, preferably).

Feel free to excuse modern day terrorism because dead people did bad things.

When did I excuse modern day terrorism? WTF!!!????

I am accusing you of calling someone a bigot for criticizing voluntarily held beliefs. I bolded it for you. If your point is that Wilders is a racist, demonstrate it from his own words. I don't care what yours or Wilders' opinion of Christianity is. It is not bigotry to point out a killer's own actions and words and it is offensive to imply otherwise.

  12. that Christianity has a history of barbarity, etc, it adds nothing to understanding and solving the problem of Islamic jihad. Once again, it merely shifts the focus.

The reason for bringing up Christianity is the approach Geert Wilders uses in his piece. He's attacking Islam qua Islam ("unmasking Muhammad"), the problems of modern day terrorism are derivative in his formulation. Demonstrating that historically Christianity and Judaism are just as bad is the main way of showing that he is, here comes that word again, a bigot.

If Christianity is indeed militant at heart, then it will always be militant at heart, no matter how far it's followers, including you, might stray, they'll always be under threat of being called back to its heart.

Do you dispute the fact that Christianity was militant as hell from the 4th century through the 17th? A major point I didn't fully make earlier is that Christianity wasn't complete until the 4th century, when it achieved political power. Until then it was like a philosophy with an ethical theory but without a political theory. Imagine the possibilities, mutatis mutandis, for Objectivism. Ethical egoism without the non-initiation of force principle. Yikes.

You begin with the assumption that he's a bigot and prove it by repeating the charge - not showing where he is prejudiced against people for matters over which they have no choice. Islam is not a genetic condition. Feel free to excuse modern day terrorism because dead people did bad things. As for Jesus and Moe, their words speak for themselves. Here are what are obviously the words the real life Jesus, who knew he would be crucified, making sure to call for mothers to murder their own children before he met his end:

34Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

35For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

36And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

38And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

39He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

40He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

41He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.

42And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

  13. After reading the Koran and the Bible, and studying history, my conclusion is that the Abrahamic religions are about equally bad, and theocracies based on any of them are no place to live. Is bigotry against one of them the answer? a Klansman calling for more Jim Crow laws.

How does recognizing the essential difference between a religion whose founder says "he who lives by the sword shall die by the sword", "my kingdom is not of this earth" and "render unto Caesar that which is Casear's" and a militant who demands war and murder to establish a religious dictatorship amount to "bigotry"? The accusation is superficial, baseless, and offensive.

  14. > the poetic justice of Peikoff’s denunciation

ND, where did Peikoff denounce her? Do you have a quote?

Yes, again, please explain this and the excommunication remark.

Phil, as for PERIGO!, its not worth the effort--I am not trying to convince people not to watch him, nor am I hoping his subsequent episodes will be as boring, narcissistic, and badly produced as the first one.

Compare his effort with Newberry's Manifesto:

  15. > Perigo's piece was bad, mostly because it was boring, a very stereotypical Objectivist bromide rehash.

Ted, it wasn't aimed at Objectivists. It's a boring rehash -to us-. We have to get past thinking about what would appeal to us when we listen to someone doing a broadcast.

Then PERIGO! was even worse. The episode assumes far too much on the part of its audience.

  16. The Perigo t.v. thing wasn't as bad as you guys like to post in mutually supporting quick succession. If it weren't P. who you despise, you would notice some good things about the show, about the points he's making that need to be said, for example.

Your objection is that people dare agree with one another?

Perigo's piece was bad, mostly because it was boring, a very stereotypical Objectivist bromide rehash. If he's not going to say something new and topical he might as well just recite Philosophy, Who Needs It?

That's not even to mention that he calls the podcast "PERIGO!" Not only all caps, but an exclamation mark AS WELL! Should have left off the PERI part.

  17. I couldn't pay attention either, because I never saw or heard him before and his writings made me expect an entirely different accent - he sounds like a 1950s "received pronunciation" BBC wannabe. I lost the thread when he talked about somebody's "hatequarters" (maybe that was deliberate, tho I don't think so, he looked too nervous)- I can't remember anything he actually said. I gave up when he started the interview.
