  1. During a long overnight round table discussion amongst fellow objectivists, I learned that my wife had struggled with discovering her life's passion (which she discovered some years after we married - sailing). I grew up with a passion for motocross from a pretty young age both as a participant and spectator. I guess I didn't really realize that most people lack a passion in life. Our children, now 22 years old, seem to not have yet discovered their passion and are drifting thru life. I did a little google search and found a topic on Oprah that mentioned that 70% of people lack a passion in life. Anyone have any advice on finding one's passion or helping someone else discover their passion? Please share how you came to discover your own passion. For me, the study of philosophy, discovering freedom issues like the right to arms, and mastering a rifle were all peripheral interests...interests that I believe set the foundation for the living of life, but were not themselves my own life long passion. http://www.raggedyedge.net
  2. Motocross as spectator and participant. One of the most physically demanding sports in the world. The joy of being on the edge...the counterparts of weightlessness and tremendous G-forces. One of the few motorsports, a mixture of man and machine, where the role the man plays is of far greater import than machine. The elements of the "on the edge of control" of downhill skiing couple with the comraderie of competing head to head. The element of danger develops a "band of brothers" bond amongst racers that probably has no equal except for maybe paintball. http://www.raggedyedge.net
  3. Stumbled upon this site. Look forward to exploring. Objectivists should definitely learn to defend themselves and the role a firearm can play in the defense of life and liberty. I personally grew up in a somewhat anti-gun family and only learned of the fiream's crucial role in individual liberty after discovering the works of Ayn Rand. I eventually wrote , The Philosophy in Defense of Firearms, which is an objectivist oriented look at the right to keep and bear arms issue. Available at my website http://www.eoffshore.com One of the issues I grapple with is the attempt to dismiss RKBA by bringing up the "right to nukes" (or any other high explosives)...I won't spill my conclusion, to encourage everyone to check out PDOF. Handguns are the tool for defending against the common, free-lance criminals, while rifles are the tool for defending against criminal governments. There is a group in NC (not objectivist), the Revolutionary War Veterans Association, that teaches rifle skills through their "Appleseed program with rifle instructors traveling across the nation to teach basic rifleman skills. http://www.rwva.org
