  1. (This is a topic I have posted in another forum, and I thought I would post it here to) The First Glance Appearances Mean Everything It is common, if not conventional knowledge that first impressions are important for those with intentions. If you want to land the job of your dreams, you always spend extra time in front of the mirror, trying oh so desperately to look your best. So, obviously, one would assume that in order to attract the most desirable woman one must present himself well. But is this truly the case? Not entirely. ---------------------- Everyone believes in something and has faith in something, whether it be a god of sorts, an ideal, a standard, or another person. We all have something we value the most and something that keeps us alive. These core, essential values are what shape the person that you are. Think about yourself on the most fundamental, the most basic, the most often overlooked level. Define yourself accordingly, and relate your basic value to the actions and words you speak. If you are honest with yourself, you will see a direct relation in your actions and your core, essential value or belief. With this knowledge in hand, you must admit that every action and word spoken is a surrender of sorts--When you speak, when you act, when you simply stand and do nothing, everything that anyone will ever need to know about you can be seen at the first glance. Sounds a bit strange doesn't it? I'm willing to bet you are thinking right now that my post is worthless and a waste of your time. But if I am wrong, and you are looking for the value, than please, do not miss this part: In order for you to find and attract that which you truly want, all you have to do is exist. If you are dishonest with yourself, you will attract dishonest people. If you are honest with yourself, you will attract honest people. And most importantly: If you love yourself, you will attract people who love themselves. Humor me for the moment and pretend that my premise of the first glance is a true, unrefutable fact. If it is true, then the people you want near you will want to be near you as well, because they will see you for what you are before any conversation is had. Men: If you keep coming up short and keep getting the women that you think you dont want, maybe it is because you dont want yourself. Maybe you aren't happy with your own existence, so you attract women who are the same, and who hold up the mirror to your low self esteem. Oh, but that cant be the case, can it? I think it is the case. In order to say 'I love you' one must first learn to say the word 'I' and MEAN it. Otherwise the phrase is meaningless, and the love you present is like that of a parasite; sucking the life of your girlfriend away because you have none to live. You must be selfish and know what you want in order to attract and find what you want, because the first glance means everything.
  2. Mr. Grotticelli: Your intentions, please. Oh, and Michael: Wrong. I know everything I will ever need to know about a person on the first glance. Shallow people do not consider appearances. NOTE: That was not a type-o.
  3. Mr. Grotticelli; Two questions that you need to answer before I believe you to be worthy of further inquiry. 1) What do you love? 2) What was this post's intent? I daresay it was not an introduction
  4. There is a huge difference between a potential threat and an imminent threat. Everything poses as a potential threat, but only occasionally do we have to deal with an imminent one. Iran is a potential threat. Nothing more.

    Exposed!

What will it take for this to end? More than 2/3s of this forum's activity has to do with Victor. I talk to Victor outside of this forum, and consider him a friend. I may disagree with him on some issues, but hey, his beliefs and values are his alone, and I cannot judge him for them. Please people. Shut the hell up about this.

    Exposed!

Agreed. I do not understand the motives behind such personal attacks when the man can't even post anymore. It is as if everyone is looking for validation in their opinions of Victor.
  7. Ron Paul is the best hope America has. But you have to consider his ideals cannot be put into effect simply because he says so. Congress must agree with him. Not only that but Ron Paul, while a great, powerful voice, is a lone one in a world that is working against him. The media pushes him down. The other republicans ignore him. The majority of Americans are ignorant of the way things are, and although the noble cause of enlightenment seems very upright you have to remember that one man cannot change the way every one thinks, but he can play an important role in the changing of times. I will support Ron Paul as much as I can, but not because I want him to be elected president. I will support him because the louder he speaks the more people he will reach, and even though he probably wont win the republican primaries, the more people that finally realize that their liberties are being taken hostage the better. This is only the beggining of a revolution. One that I will not sit idly by and watch.

    Beyond

Who can tell me what is real? How am I to know that I am not being deceived? Can I trust my own senses? Is it possible to live at ease with uncertainty? My limitations that have been preset are written in stone. I cannot control the setting that I have been given. I cannot control the circumstances I am involved with—I can only control my reactions. Reaction. Cause, effect, action, reaction. If my choices are only a fraction of what creates my life, how can I be happy? Can I be happy with limitations? Limitations. Determined. Determined by whom? Determined by those born before me? My mother? My father? If I cannot set the standards for my life, why would I trust the standards I create now? Self-Aware I am aware of my limitations. I am aware of the possibility that I may not exist as I perceive it. Therefore, can I complain that I have limitations? I understand my limitations, and therefore, I can work to break them. I can work to change them. I can work to live longer. But why? Why can I not simply stop time? If reality is subjective, then why can I not change it? If reality is objective, then who created it? Who controls reality? Who can change what happens to me? Reality can only be subjective if I can control reality. How can I know that the power to control my own reality is not in my hands? The only way to know is to gain it for myself. Other than that, reality must be defined as objective, and therefore, out of my hands. I can only act within the boundaries reality creates. If I act outside of them, the laws of reality will be enforced. If I take a loaded gun and shoot myself in the face, objective reality says I should die. However, in a subjective reality, I control the impact of the bullet on my face. Can I know whether or not I have control? Will I ever know? I cannot accept that the gifts I have been given are curses. I cannot accept that Adam and Eve existed. Adam and Eve were robots—completely unaware of themselves and unconscious. Adam and Eve were dead. How can it all be planned by God? Did God decide to create 2 people, and everything that followed was out of his control? Why? Why didn’t he control it? Why would he let the world run loose? If he let the world run freely, then he cannot punish those who do not believe he exists. And if God intervened, then my life is meaningless. Therefore, God must define himself. I cannot define God. But how can God define himself? How can I trust anything as God? If God controls my reality, then he can change my reality. Therefore, God can only exist subjectively. If reality is subjective to God, and reality is objective to me, then God can only be proven to exist subjectively. If God is an objective being, then he is the creation of something else. Define. Analyze. Self. What is real? Beyond the horizon I have been given.
  9. Of course, and I dont plan on it.
  10. I have the book in my lap as I type this. I'm not dissapointed either. So far, it is a damn good book. Apprach is with an unbiased opinion, and you will find Al Gore has some very, VERY interesting things to say. P.S I also bought John Stossel's 'Myth, Lies, And Downright Stupidity: Get out the Shovel--Why Everything You Know Is Wrong.' I love this book too
  11. And there lies the bottom line. Most people dont know how to challenge him on his premises--they only know how to take low blows and try to destroy the arguement without debating it. And that is the only thing I fear with Gore. If he remains unchallenged he may get overconfident and forget his values that he states here. One thing is for certain. If he runs in 2008 I'm writing his name on the ballot.
  12. If you can look at this and remain unbiased, then please, tell me that he is not worth listening to.
  13. Why irony? I'm going to buy this book tommorow.
  14. I agree, only I think that, psychologically, a normal, average person in our current American society doesn't become an adult until he or she is 26 (and some Objectivists never become adults). Having sex before 26 can be psychologically damaging (I've seen many people completely mess up their lives by doing so), and should be punished with long prison terms. People who advocate the right to have sex with people younger than 26 should be socially stigmatized. What was Rand's official Objectivist position on the age of consent, and what were the arguments she used to support it? Actually, I think a more relevant question is "what is the age of stigma?" According to Objectivism, what age of consent can a person publicly advocate without being labeled a pervert? I say 26. What does Objectivism say? J Are you serious?
  15. Supply and demand do indeed apply to life as well as most everything else that humans want or need. Risky behaviour though is a little more complex. We see a much greater incidence of risky behaviour in young males. Something like 80% or more spinal injuries are males under 25. Why is this? The best way to explain this is through evolution. Until a male has ensured that his genes will continue to the next generation, he has very little to lose (in an evolutionary sense) and will engage in risky behaviour to impress potential mates and discourage rivals. When a man has a wife, children, and home to protect (ie ensuring genes make it to the next generation) he has more to protect and risk behaviour dramatically drops off. This makes perfect sense. People like to whine and protest that we can easily overcome our genetic predispositions because of our huge intellect. Well, it ain't that easy and evolution has shaped and explains much more behaviour than most people might think it does. Bob I disagree. I believe the best way to explain risky behaviour in males under the age of 25 is to understand that, in most cases, the younger they are, the less defined their values are. Not only that, but society molds those weaker minded youth's to such a degree that they no longer value life, it seems.
  16. So why aren't we all going insane and doing completely reckless and otherwise illogical things as of now? Why would you treat a longer life with any more care than a shorter one? Since the life is SHORTER, it would be LOGICAL to value the time spent in that short period of time, but if it were LONGER, it would be LOGICAL to take time for granted because there is so much of it available. Supply and demand. If my conclusion is not valid, then tell me why I'm not going out taking part in 'risky' behavoiur.
  17. The Sun is halfway to its ultimate burnout (it is too small to become a nova or supernova). However it will burn very hot when the hydrogen is used up and the oceans will evaporate. This will occur much sooner than the Sun's final death as a white dwarf then a cooled down cinder. Life on this planet will have a very hard time a billion years up the road. Human life will probably cease on this planet. That means we will be extinct by that time or we will have moved to a more hospitable place. I rather suspect the former than the latter. Ba'al Chatzaf Maybe it's because I'm a follower of theoretical physics, or maybe it's because I'm a Star Trek fan, but I suspect it will be the latter.
  18. Matus; You need to explain your position better because the constant digressions (whether purposely enacted or not) are causing your arguement to become blurred. I believe your arguement is, for a shorter life expectancy, carelessness is inspired, but in a life that is expected to be almost eternal, extreme caution is taken in one's actions. Am I right? Because clearly, you arent talking about an immortal being that cannot die, but merely a being whose life may last forever as long as that being treats his life with care.
  19. Ya know, I think, if we arent careful, we are going to make some people mad. *strange looking doctor with too many piercings and an odd voice telling you that it wont hurt too bad*
  20. Kori, How about: *random homeless guy wrestling with an imaginary bear*
  21. And it shouldn't be. But some people are making it seem that way. No, it definitely shouldn't. And yes, some people are making it seem that way, including me at times. I'm done with that. I say we both sit and let this problem sort itself out without any attachment from our part (if its possible).
  22. See also -The Trouble with Physics- by Lee Smolin. Ba'al Chatzaf Im buying that book today, now that I've read this article. It'll add to my collection.
