Folk's 32-yard FG sends Jets past Colts 17-16

By MICHAEL MAROT, AP Sports Writer 10 minutes ago INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Nick Folk(notes) kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired Saturday night, giving the New York Jets a 17-16 first-round playoff victory over the Indianapolis Colts. New York (12-5) now heads to New England for a third meeting next Sunday.

The Colts (11-6), AFC champions last year over the Jets, thought they had won it when Adam Vinatieri(notes) made a 50-yard field goal with 53 seconds left, his longest kick since 2008.

But the Jets got a 47-yard kickoff return from Antonio Cromartie(notes) and Mark Sanchez(notes) set up the field goal with an 18-yard pass to Braylon Edwards(notes) at the Colts 14. New York called timeout with 3 seconds to go, and Folk hit the winner.

New York's LaDainian Tomlinson(notes) rushed 16 times for 82 yards and scored two TDs, both on 1-yard runs.

Peyton Manning(notes) was 18 of 26 for 225 yards and one TD.

The only benefit of the Jets remaining in the playoffs is the chance of seeing the Steelers and the Ravens play again.

Understood. Looks like that is on the way to happening. I am a Giant fanatic and a Jet fan - NY fan al the way. Makes it easy having the Yankees though.

I was wondering whether they were going to allow the Raven's defense to bring their guns to the game.

I guess if you're a Jets fan then you could be happy with their win. I don't dislike the Jets, but it's difficult to expect them to play a good game against New England. Their runners are looking mediocre and Sanchez is as shaky as ever. But I'd be happily surprised if they do manage to give Brady a challenge.

And thanks to the Chiefs' utter failure to pass the ball, the Ravens are through. Pittsburgh vs Baltimore is going to be great.

Being a Giant fan must be frustrating. Every star on offense is either injured or turning the ball over!

Who do you have winning the Super Bowl this year? (not the jets!? :D )

Baltimore

Pittsburgh -3 1/2 O/U 38 1/2

Green Bay - 2 1/2 O/U 45

Atlanta

Seattle

Chicago -10 O/U 40

NY Jets

New England Patriots -8 1/2 O/U 45 1/2

Interesting field.

Chicago should definitely advance and should cover the 10.

Somehow the Jets keep managing to win - they did not deserve to win this weekend.

Green Bay could surprise Atlanta, but I have not followed the Falcons this year, but they have a great record.

And I am unsure of the Pittsburgh Raven game. I have always rooted for Pittsburgh because I just like their smash mouth football and I love Pennsylvania.

That is it so far. Your thoughts?

Adam,

Chicago will definitely win if the good version of Jay Cutler shows up. If not, that game could easily go either way. Especially if Matt Hasselbeck becomes amazing again.

The Patriots will win against the Jets. Maybe if Brady gets injured the Jets will have a chance.

Pittsburgh wins a close one against Baltimore. Well, "wins" probably isn't the right word: Pittsburgh survives a close one against Baltimore.

Atlanta and Green Bay are my Super Bowl favorites. This game, like Green Bay's future, depends upon the Packers' running backs. If Green Bay runs as well as they did against Philadelphia, they win this game (and if they keep running well, they win the Super Bowl). If Green Bay doesn't run well, Atlanta wins.

In terms of who I want to win, I'm going cheer for Da Bears (that Chris Farley bit converted me to a Bears fan a long time ago), the Patriots, the Steelers, and the Packers.

Growing up in the 50's as a Giant fan made me a lover of defensive. Sam Huff vs. Jim Brown was classic.

So, that Buddy Ryan (?) defense with the nine (9) men in the box was amazing and has always had me root for the Bears, [unless of course they were playing the Giants].

So we agree on the Bears.

I also will go with the Packers, and Steelers.

Unfortunately, I have to go with the Jets.

So a Packer New England Superbowl works for me.

Post script: I am trying to acquire an out of production board game called Pro Quarterback which was the best strategic table football game ever developed. So if you have any ideas on places to acquire out of production games I would appreciate it.

"Pro Quarterback is the first adult game for men and boys who take football seriously and have outgrown toys. It is a scientifically designed game system which reproduces the dynamics of modern professional football. The Flanker-T offense versus the 4-3-4 defense with statistical accuracy and realism. Physical factors balance out. Each team is exactly equal in power, speed and proficiency.

There are twelve Offense Cards and nine Defense Cards. Each players chooses a card secretly. The player on offense then declares whether the play action will take place on the weak side or strong side. The player on offense rolls three six-sided dice and the player on defense rolls two six-sided dice. The die rolls are modified by the play choices and the resulting yardage is the modified offensive roll minus the modified defensive roll. Results of the plays are recorded using a grease pencil on the laminated gameboard.

To get instructions concerning penalties and organizing a league, one would have had to contact the now defunct publisher"

Mike:

Lol, yes by about a quarter century. It came out in the mid nineteen sixties.

I also played for five years in an unlimited weight, money league in NY City. We were great. We did not lose a single game in five years and tied one. I love the game of football.

The game was developed by Todd Lansing and perfectly replicated the strategic aspects of the modern pro football game. For example, throwing a screen pass or check off pass over a weak side blitz would be the correct call to maximize the gain. My friends and I added numerous variations to both the offensive options and the defensive sets to a point where we could replicate any possible actual call in football with results that were remarkably accurate.

It was great fun.

I see you are a backpacker. I did a lot of minimalist and tarp backpacking while I was in Virginia for four (4) years, which was three (3) years ago.

Waking up under a tarp and looking out over the Shenandoah Valley from the top of a mountain is an unbeatable experience.

Adam,

That sounds like a great game. Games where strategy is the responsibility/privilege of the player are always the best. If it doesn't make you think (and also reward such thought!), it's not much of a game.

In 2009, I wrote some QBasic (a language older than me) code which uses 'rules' of good defense (i.e. for a cover cornerback, the rule is "stay on the wide receiver" and for a blitzing linebacker the rule is "get the quarterback") to simulate a certain defensive response to an offensive play. Getting the defenders to 1) recognize where "their guy" was and 2) move towards/with that guy in a specific manner was pretty difficult. Simple plays worked well, but I have a lot of respect for the people that first figured out how to make a good football game.

I love backpacking/hiking. Utah's mountains are incredible. Especially Mount Timpanogos. Two summits this last summer = two very memorable experiences. On the first, visibility was about 10 feet near the top. My friend and I were literally inside clouds. We're both scared of heights as well, so when we made it to the summit there was plenty of adrenaline flowing! Very exhilarating. Little did we know that the last five miles (it's a fifteen-mile round trip) on our descent would be spent in a record-setting rainstorm! The trail became a stream and there eventually was so much hail it appeared to be snowing.

The second summit was much different. Let me tell you, there is ZERO light on the road at 6:00 AM in the Uinta National Forest. No streetlights, no other cars, no sun, no moon, nothing. Driving headlights-only on a curvy road with some serious precipices was a 'memorable' experience. The first half-hour of the hike was done by flashlight. However, there were no clouds that time, and the sunlight gave some beautiful pictures. It's one of the highest mountains in Utah, and is far higher than anything else close by. Visibility was great when we got to the summit: Looking down on other mountain ranges and seeing literally as far as your eye can see is probably pretty close to unbeatable. Especially when the prerequisite is a 7.5 mile uphill hike!

I've never done any hiking outside of Utah (maybe a little bit in Idaho Falls about twelve years ago). Have you ever hiked/backpacked here in Utah? Or in the Rocky Mountains?

Nope, unfortunately. East coast primarily. What you describe is breathtaking. Do you do overnights, or just day hikes?

If you consider a four or five day backpacking excursion, I would highly recommend the minimalist approach. My lady and I would go for four (4) days with each of us having a 22 pound pack.

We built our own packs and used tarps rather than tents. Limiting weight became a fascinating strategic problem to solve. Purification of water. Food supplies are a real challenge. And never forget to have a bear bag to string up in a specific type of tree every night!!

You should share some of your photos.

Adam,

I've only done day hikes as of yet. Most of the time my hiking friend and I will do a five to fifteen mile hike and then do some climbing at the final destination. We're thinking of doing a midnight hike of Timpanogos this August.

The first thought that came to my mind when I read "four or five day backpacking excursion" was how you could take enough food and water! That's a very neat problem. How on earth do you pack enough food? You can purify water but obtaining food isn't that easy... let me guess: a gallon of protein shake?!

If you're doing four and five day trips, how far do you usually go? Do you do mountains, really long trails (or really long trails on mountains), or both?

You should share some of your photos.

Adam

I've got some great ones. You'll probably like them a lot because you've never hiked the Rockies.

Any suggestions about how I can get them on here? The "Insert Image" only wants a link and copy & paste isn't working.

As to the technical issue getting photos onto this forum, I suggest you PM Michael. I am happy my typing, the icons and the YouTubes that I use makes it to the forum.

As to the food, we used a lot dehydrated meals that we prepared. Farina's and grains. Trial mix. Also, we would forage for treats. Blueberries. We caught trout with a free line, not an easy task, but that was not something we relied on in our preparations. Also, trail mix. My lady developed a cylindrical stove which we could cook pretty well on. Boil water and "teacozy" cook it.

A lot of the trails we were on did not permit open fires.

The hikes we were on were sometimes a combination of low trails and mountains. One four day was a sequence of three mountains with virtually no flat ground. We dud one river trail where we descended for half a day and emerged three days later with a half day climb out of the valley.

Adam,

I found the solution to the photo-posting issue on the tech-support page. I was just about to PM Michael but I remembered seeing "tech-support" somewhere on the main page.

I uploaded some of my favorite photos from all of my 2010 hikes onto a new thread.

That sounds amazing!

I'm fairly tempted to see if there exist any similar hikes in Utah.

New England Patriots -8 1/2 O/U 44 1/2

I'm picking Pitts. 23

Balt 20 so they will not cover and will make the over

Green Bay 31 so that will be a push and the over

Atlanta 30

Now these are the Yahoo odds - I am sure there is a better line out there for the Green Bay game - no bookie likes a one point line - there must be a 1 1/2 out there.

Yeah! The Packers are scary now. I'm excited for them to play the Bears (surprisingly, I cheer for both teams).

Well, shoot. I guess I can't make a prediction for the Bears today. (Just finished the first week of winter semester. I needed the extra sleep!) Last night, though, I said that the Bears would win 20-17. I'm not out of it quite yet.

Hmm. I'll go 24-17 for New England.

That is a tough schedule.

The Jets played a flawless game. The score did not indicate how much they dominated the Patriots. I am still surprised at how well they played.

Those two (2) Jet corners are superior.

Can you even imagine a Packer Jet super bowl!!

Adam,

It's a tough schedule, but aside from general ed classes I wouldn't want it any other way. Quantum Chem is a real challenge, and the "mental workout" I get out of it is incredible. Same with PDEs. Tough courses, but very rewarding.

The Jets really did dominate that game. If they show up like that again, I think they've got a good chance against Pittsburgh. But let's remember, they've played Indianapolis and New England. Not exactly the best defensive teams in the league... actually two of the worst. Now they're up against the Steelers. By far the best defense. And a very good offense too. I'm initially thinking Pittsburgh, but I'm hesitant to make that call so quickly.

Revis and Cromartie are both incredible cornerbacks. But nobody on the Jets' defense is as fast as Mike Wallace (Pitt WR). He could give them problems. Neither New England nor Indianapolis has a guy with his speed. Should be a neat matchup.

I'm so happy the Bears won. Packers-Bears is going to be great! I'm not sure who to pick for that one, but my gut tells me the Packers.

Packers-Jets (best offense v.s. great defense) would be wild. Packers-Steelers (best offense v.s. best defense?) too.

I guess I don't really want the Bears to win now. Packers v.s. Jets/Steelers is too good to cheer against!
