Hello, objectivism online. My name is Herb Sewell, I am an electrical engineer who currently resides in Oakland, California. I have a wife a 3 kids ( and expecting 4). I am (usually) a mild mannered fellow, known for his level head but can turn in a flash. My political and philosophical history has been bumpy at best, I was a socialist all throughout my teen years, I was under the spell of egalitarianism for those troubled times. For the duration of my twenties I shifted a bit farther right but not much and was practically a democrat shill. That was, until I discovered Rand. Now I had read Rand during high school for my English class, but it had never struck me or made any sort of impact, possibly because I was forced to read it. But during my late twenties I picked up a the fountain head at a second hand store and perused it for a short period if time, as I read the book began to speak to me more and more and in a short period of time I fell into a fervor. I couldn't get enough of Rand, I read at a pace never before seen. I completely changed my life style and become a happier person. But I felt disconnected from the objectivist community and felt I needed to form some sort of bond so I decided to come here to you today. I hope to find that here amongst lie minded people, thank you and I look forward to getting to know each of you.

Welcome Herb. Good to see another fellow engineer on OL!

Hello, objectivism online. My name is Herb Sewell...

Herb,

I have greeted you in another thread.

How come you list your name as Bill Turner on your profile?

Anyway, this it the Objectivist Living forum, not "objectivism online."

Michael

We seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot sir.

My name in actuality is Bill Turner,Herb Sewell is a screen name.

I meant no disrespect by my previous postings and I offer you my apologies if I have in any way offended you.

;) Hehe, I probably had something to do with this:

Herb, electrical engineering... that's good. I'm currently a Chemical Engineering major (University of Utah), but I do have an affinity for semiconductors.

I don't get it, what's the meaning of the name? If it's a reference to the Phil Hendrie character, that sure bodes ill. Especially if you're posting in character, you'll be banned in no time. I suppose it's too late to switch to Jeff Dowder, Bobbie Dooley, or Margaret Gray.

I'm the Doctor, by the way.

why does this bode ill? is your literal name "the ninth doctor"? a screen name is an alias

Just start making posts in favour of pedophilia, see how it goes over. I can talk about the TARDIS, saving the earth from the Daleks, snogging Rose Tyler, shout “Fantastic!” and “Everybody Lives!” etc. Herb Sewell’s a great character in the Hendrie pantheon, but where can you go with it?

If I were to pick a Hendrie character, it’d be Jeff Dowder. For those not familiar, combine Spicoli with The Dude, and give him a doctorate in “mechanical physics”. Spark the owl, man…what???

Herb,

When you post under the name "Herb Sewell" you are implicitly stating that's your real name because it sounds like a real name. Just "Herb" would have been a lot better. If I had known over 20 years ago how my remarks would be preserved from Petr Beckmann's old Fort Freedom, I'd have had a screen name too starting way back then. As it is I've never posted except under my actual name. There is one forum where I'm just "Brant." It helps that I'm 66. It would matter a lot more if I were 46 today, especially since my name is almost unique in the world.

Do not presume anything that is not logically necessitated. If the act of dawning one's real name is not stipulated in the rules of this forum, it would be foolish to assume as a default that every person's who user name in its appearance may be a real name is the real name of the person who is posting.

Just "Herb" would have been a lot better.

The reference to the Phil Hendrie character would have been lost, so no, it would have not been better.

Cool story, bro.

Please explain why you chose to use that name on this site. If there were a critic constantly accusing this site of supporting cannibalism, you couldn’t be surprised if you got a hot reception after signing on as Hannibal Lecter. You’ve chosen the name of a fictional pedophile, a character that argues in favour of pederasty. That’s all that the character Herb Sewell does. Those not familiar with Phil Hendrie will have trouble imagining how that can be funny, well take my word for it, in his hands, it is.

If you need background material into why this raises red flags, and I have serious doubts that you do, check out this thread.
