Here's a clip from 50 First Dates

Honey, there is no "thinking about it"...I just said DO IT, DO IT!

LOL, go fer it, Ange.

That was a cute clip! SO cute that they were both dancing. *meltsighs* Adam Sandler is a cutie pie, even when he was playin' that dum dum Billy Madison.

Victor, AWWWW, that really WAS cute. Maybe I'll have to revisit The Wedding Singer.

"Don't talk to Billy Idol that way!"

Kori,

With 50 First Dates, it's actually sad as to why she doesn't remember but has a happy ending. You should watch it, it's a cute funny romantic movie. It is sad as to why she forgets so much as well as touching as to the lengths Sandler goes to get Drew to be his one and only love.

50 First dates...that was very sweet. Honey, would you beat somebody with a baseball bat for me? Hmmm? :aww:

Oh, my GOD. The reason I posted that particular clip was because Kori made reference to her beating him up with a bat and that was the only scene with a bat. There was another scene where she wakes up with him in her bed and she doesn't know who he is and she freaks and hits him with a tennis racket or something. Real briefly, she was in an accident about a year before he met her and suffered brain damage as a result. When she wakes up in the morning, she doesn't remember the previous day. It starts all over. She forgets everything that happened. So anyone she met the prior day she will not remember. Long term memory is okay but short term is messed up. Well, Adam falls head over heels for her and battles whether or not he could live happily with her and a somewhat normal life. Well, he falls really hard for her. She is an absolute joy to be around. Well, since she doesn't remember who he is, he does all kinds of crazy things trying to get her to stop and talk to him, etc. The bat scene was just one of his crazy ideas to get her to stop and talk with him which it worked. Anyway, I won't say anymore. It is a cute funny movie.

I recall reading the plot of the movie and you are bringing it all back. Damn, we have a lot of movies to see, but I can tell you have a soft spot for this one--so it is on the list. You make the popcorn and I'll mix us a drink, sweetie. B)

Ah, Victor...My Chemical Romance = tha bomb. I just can't help it...although Ghost of You is not one of their best songs. *recommends The Black Parade album*

Ange, I couldn't remember if she was beating Sandler or not. I'm glad it was Rob Schneider...that guy is a douche.

Now for something really different: The dark side of relationships!

Here is a movie called CARNAL KNOWLEDGE—starring Jack Nicholson and Ann-Margaret.

Here’s a scene from the movie. The conflict: she wants a serious relationship…and he doesn’t. Real bad, real bad. This is a great movie.

~ CARNAL KNOWLEDGE? If anything was anti-'romantic', that movie struck me as one.

~ Now, 50 FIRST DATES: cute and funny, yes. An interesting perspective is that the title seems to refer only to Sandler, but just as well applied to Barrymore. I think this was also his best movie. (Forget CLICK!)

~ Generally, as far as 'old fashioned' goes, check out the older ones with Tracy and K. Hepburn. Some with Wayne and O'Hara were quite good also, especially THE QUIET MAN. (Then there's ROBIN AND MARIAN with Connery and A. Hepburn [her last, I believe])

~ Did anyone mention the film version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA musical yet?

~ Boy, have you two a lot of popcorn to get through!

I too like the Bette Davis movies Dark Victory and Now Voyager. Dark Victory has some hokum. No disease in the history worked like the one Bette Davis has in the movie. The last scenes of the movie are beautifully done. Now Voyager is a great movie about repression in the human soul and psyche. I once saw Bette Davis on television where she said she thought that her character did not end up with Paul Henreid but with the Claude Rains character.

'Tis a very cool game, though I'm not good at it (don't watch a ridiculous amount of movies). You pop in a DVD and it shows you scenes and asks you questions, etc. Very fun, fun, fun.

My sis played it in Arizona and brought it back for me, her, and her movie lover friend Jonathan to play. You and Ange could play it (though it's actually more fun with more than 2 peeps).

Also, this isn't movie related, but you should also check out the game Cranium. What can I say? I'm a board game lover. You've got your Wedding Singer, I've got my board games. LOL.

Rich; I think on Romeo and Juliet you mean the Franco Zeffirelli version that came out in 1968. The two leads were the same age as the principles. It was filmed in Italy beautifully. There is a modern version with Leonardo Dicaprio which I don't like as much.

John,

Yes, Carnal Knowledge is a movie that takes a look at the dark side of human relationships, and it could be argued as anti-romantic. But it is such intelligent film making, regardless of the gloom.

Yes! Tracy and Hepburn! Good call, my friend. They made some wonderful romantic comedies together--and they were a hot pair in real life. Now these two people were in love! Damn, too bad they were married to other people. :turned:

Angie baby, Chris, John...et al,

One of my favorite Hepburn and Tracy movies is the gloriously romantic “Guess who is coming to Dinner.” What a beautiful movie! We are talking true love here and free-thought.

Here is a run down on the plot: Old-line liberals Matt and Christina Drayton (Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn) have raised their daughter Joey (Katharine Houghton) to think for herself --and not blindly conform to the conventional.*(1.1) (You gotta love that!). They aren't prepared for the shock when she returns home from a vacation with a new fiancé: African-American doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier).*(1.2) Now, keep in mind this was 1967 and the civil rights movement was still a raging issue.

While Joey’s parents come to grips with whatever prejudices they might harbor, the younger folks must also contend with John's parents (Roy Glenn Sr. and Beah Richards), who are against the union. To complicate matters, the older couple's disapproving maid (Isabel Sanford) and Christina's bigoted business associate (Virginia Christine) put in their two cents' worth. Joey is determined to go ahead with the wedding no matter what people think, but John refuses to consider marriage until he receives the unqualified approval of all concerned.*(1.3) That approval is offered in Spencer Tracy’s closing speech --and it is classic!

The movie will have you crying and cheering not only for true love, but also for free-thought.

NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATOR:

*(1) Plagiarized from Plot Synopsis of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner by Hal Erickson on All Movie Guide. The original passages read as follows:

(1.1)

Old-line liberals Matt and Christina Drayton (Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn) have raised their daughter Joey (Katharine Houghton) to think for herself and not blindly conform to the conventional.

(1.2)

Still, they aren't prepared for the shock when she returns home from a vacation with a new fiancé: African-American doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier).

(1.3)

While they come to grips with whatever prejudices they might still harbor, the younger folks must also contend with John's parents (Roy Glenn Sr. and Beah Richards), who are dead-set against the union. To complicate matters, the older couple's disapproving maid (Isabel Sanford) and Christina's bigoted business associate (Virginia Christine) put in their two cents' worth. While Joey is determined to go ahead with the wedding no matter what people think, John refuses to consider marriage until he receives the unqualified approval of all concerned.

OL extends its deepest apologies to Hal Erickson.

I'm glad the 80s were good for SOMETHING.

HEY!!!!

As far as I'm concerned, it's still 1986, and I'm still in my 20s, and so it will be as long as I live.

Judith

PS: could someone please post a picture of a mullet haircut for me? I've been hearing about it for years, but I don't know what it is.

My God, Judith, you don't know what a mullet is? You are deprived, my friend.

*scarred for life*

I just rented 50 First Dates, Closer, and Factotum. *looks forward...* Blockbuster didn't have City Lights, the bastards!

Closer is a wicked movie...a little dark, but well done. I don't know about it being a romanic movie though...but hey. Yeah, Blockbuster didn't have a GREAT movie like City Lights...no big shock.
