This is just a friendly reminder that the final application deadline for the Ayn Rand Institute's 2010-11 Objectivist Academic Center (OAC) program is July 30, 2010. The OAC is the premier program for individuals who want to systematically study Ayn Rand’s ideas. Courses guide each student in developing the tools necessary to communicate effectively, logically and rationally. It is also the perfect place to meet other students interested in Ayn Rand's writings and their relevance to today’s world. The OAC's one-of-a-kind curriculum provides an opportunity to learn Objectivist methodology in a way that cannot be found anywhere else. Tuition waivers and phone reimbursement are available to full time students. Auditors are welcome!

You can find more at www.objectivistacademiccenter.org. If you have any questions, feel free to contact oac@aynrand.org.

Thanks for the tip!

I am sure that you are correct in stating that "OAC's one-of-a-kind curriculum provides an opportunity to learn Objectivist methodology in a way that cannot be found anywhere else." No doubt about that.

And this is just a friendly reminder that the FREE MINDS 2010 ATLAS SOCIETY SUMMER CONFERENCE opens next week in Alexandria, VA.

You can find out all about it here: http://www.freeminds2010.org/

The conference features a full schedule of speakers from the academic, professional and business world;

including those who have been involved in the creation of the Objectivist movement, such as Ayn Rand's original "intellectual heir," NATHANIEL BRANDEN! (You may even get him to sign a copy of his new book, THE VISION OF AYN RAND: THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF OBJECTIVISM!).

At the Free Minds 2010 conference you will find a free and open atmosphere emphasizing tolerance and discussion of all aspects related to the philosophy of Objectivism, and its relevance to the world today.

Additionally, the TAS OBJECTIVIST ACADEMIC SEMINAR follows the conference, starting on August 1 through the 6th at George Washington University, in Washington, D.C. Note that at the bottom of the announcement, applications are still being accepted. See: http://www.objectivistcenter.org/cth-13-2292-GS10.aspx

stewartnla,

You are probably aware that this forum is a sort of rogue Objectivism--actually a place for discussing and checking premises more than anything else.

And there is a strong leaning toward TAS people (who, btw, are great folks) and the Brandens (who are likewise great folks).

I'm not trying to be hostile or tribal by saying this. I just want to make clear where you are and that you know it.

In that spirit, welcome to OL. Your announcements are most welcome, too. You have my heart-felt goodwill.

If any of OL's readers are interested in OAC, it is good to have that information readily available. And if you would like to inform our readers more about these things, please feel free to do so.

Michael

Stewart Margolis,

I see that you are administrator for the Objectivist Academic Center and the Academic Division’s grant program. The OAC program, along with ARI’s essay-contest program, look to be truly fine things. Welcome to Objectivist Living.

Delighted by your letter in the LA Times back in 2003:

Re "Partial-Birth Ban Takes Aim at Right to Privacy," Commentary, Sept. 30: Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), chief spokesman for the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, asserts that the framers of the Constitution intended to give people only "the freedom to pursue the truth ... not hedonistic happiness, but true happiness that you find in serving others." He's wrong.

This is not a recipe for freedom, but for totalitarianism. Who is to decide whether citizens are pursuing the truth? Why, the government. This is what the founding fathers sought to avoid. Ayn Rand wrote that "the Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizens' protection against the government."
