Islam under the Ottoman Turks was stopped by Don Juan of Austria in a decisive sea battle from taking over the western Mediterranean.Lepanto is little recognized today but in my opinion it was as important as the defeat of the Spanish Armada or the battle of Midway in our time. The forces were outnumbered but still brave and resourceful. The forces of the West had great commander in Don Juan of Austria.There is great poem by Chesterton about the battle.
