Michael Stuart Kelly Posted July 5, 2019 Author Share Posted July 5, 2019 What a lovely speech. I think this is going to move the Overton Window in the mainstream re talking about the US military. The modern mainstream tone is that the military is full of victims (wounded Vets who can't get health care, PTSD and so on), or as people stuck in a system where they have to follow orders and do "empire" and "oppression" things they disagree with, including unending and unwinnable wars for profit. In this speech, President Trump smacked that image hard without a hostile word. He gave a brief but sweeping history lesson of the armed forces and he did it in a tone of heartfelt pride. An entire generation or two of young Americans have no idea of most of this and, I bet, many are now going to start looking it up. As to pride, I now expect to see more of that emotional tone in mainstream coverage of the US armed forces. This does not apply to haters, of course.
