One of Musk's babies. A reusable rocket

See  http://www.globalpost.com/article/6709861/2015/12/22/why-spacex-landing-great-nasa

It launches and it lands intact and it costs a tenth of what NASA produced vehicles cost.

It may finally make cargo transport to orbit  reasonably priced.

What has Drumpf produced besides hotels, casinos and golf courses?

Yeahbut. Elon Musk isn't a perfect capitalist and some people find a stink about him.

But yeah.  Credit the Galts among the teams that produced this unmanned marvel -- a 'shuttle' that can't kill its astronauts. My mental image is of those early space-opera serials, Buster Crabbe and rockets that went up and rockets that came down, even rockets that landed ass first.

SpaceX Makes History With First-Ever Recycled Rocket

A booster that flew to space last year made the trip again and returned to Earth, marking a major step on the road to cheaper space travel.

A previously used SpaceX booster takes off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on March 30 in the world's first successful flight of a reused rocket.

One rocket (first stage), gently used. Minimal mileage, moderate lift capacity, best used for delivery of goods to Earth-orbit. 100% success rate! Price ~$62 million, OBO given pre-flown condition (though we prefer to think of this as “flight proven”).

In a milestone for the private spaceflight company, SpaceX today successfully launched a reused Falcon 9 rocket booster into space—the same first stage that carried a bouncy house into space last year.

The rocket booster had previously stuck a spectacular landing on a drone ship floating off the Florida coast, playfully named “Of Course I Still Love You.”

Even if Musk smells a little bit, the force of will that is SpaceX has racked some momentous achievements. "When will humankind use rockets that can land on their assess, and fly again?" "Oh, in 2017."

What comes out of the Musk faucet is technology.  What comes out the Trump faucet?   Hotels and gambling houses on The Boardwalk and an occasional golf  course.

Power.

He has more than real-estate and branding faucets now that he presides over government pipes, now that he is The Administrator.

I'd like to think he considers his poor children and the price they pay for being in his family. So, I hope that the real-estate and branding 'pumps up the volume' on cash-flows into Trump, Etc  -- and the reach of Trump, Etc. I think he could, if they swing it right, get a Trump Tower built in Moscow after all this time, and fully expand the Trump brand in China. Why the hell not?  If the Trump family assets increase in value and reach while he is in power, all to the American good. If the Kushners are enriched, America is enriched. If Ivanka can ace her White House job, everyone wins.

If the USA kisses up with Russia after the 'false news' is bled out of the 2017 version of Benghazi, all to the eventual good of Trump, Etc.  Leaving a legacy, a real 'Third Term' ... willing Mar-a-Lago to the nation, stamping the name on so many great things, letting a whole new generation of Trumps learn the levers of power, leaving a more permanent brand.

Or not.

I ask what came out of Trump faucet.  Any new technology?  No.  Any increment in technology?  No.

A Trump Tower in Moscow!!!  Wow! Mankind has taken a great leap forward.  One small hotel for Trump,  one gigantic what for mankind?

Real estate is fine.  We all live in houses, sometimes we stay in hotels and some of us gamble in casinos and some of us play golf.  Is this Progress????

None of this would have taken place without steam engines generating electricity.  That is the doing of James Watt who was a capitalist as well as an inventor and Michael Faraday  who was an inventor  made possible by capitalism.

You will please forgive me, I pray,  if I put more stock in physics  and technology than in real estate.

Bob, I was giving the analogy a spin, a full spin and a double wink. Meant more for entertainment than edification.  I gave note earlier of scents attached to Musk (insert Musk-as-perfume expl. here). That was a reference to certain quarters here who are suspicious or uncomfortable with his subsidies ...

Now I will kill for all time the Faucet Analogy. Musk's lines of finance are connected to pipelines overseen by The Administrator. There are valves he can use to raise or reduce dollar-power flow through the Musk pipes. He could remove all benefit of government to any electric-car-connected enterprise, chiseling away struts and floors to the entire 'new economy' promised by cheap and capacious battery technology.

Let me stomp on it, the analogy. Musk and Trump are both consequential actors within their ambits. Trump's ambit, even at day 60+, is the larger.  He commands institutions that Musk cannot.

So, I belabor the point I slicked up with humour: Trump is no longer a mere hotelier or brand or real estate tycoon or mere billionaire. He is (even if only potentially) the most consequential actor. Trump sits at the apex of the US state, with vast powers attendant to his office.

Musk is a mighty achiever indeed, even discounting his attachment to a government nipple.  And he promises still more. And yet Trump may well be mightier still, within his constitutional role, given up to eight years in office.  We did not judge Musk immediately upon entrance to the inventor's club, nor should we judge Trump's consequence at the outset of his job.

Let me add further quenching water to the stomped out but still sizzling analogy. Trump could open cash hydraulics that help propel America to Mars!

I am far too simple and literal minded to fully grasp your subtleties.  I just look at the facts.  What does Musk leave behind him?  A trail of technology.  And what does Trump leave behind him? (prior to his elections)   Hotels, gambling houses and golf courses.  I pay attention to facts.  You  conjure with possibilities. That is above my pay grade.  It remains to be seen,  just what Trump will do.  I do not have your hopes.  I get the impression that Trump has a very limited intellect.  I could sooner teach differential equations  to my pet hog  than I could to Trump.

Let's compromise at "We don't know yet."

I believe Trump will act to put promises and policies in action, to slash this and slag that, to hack away at Gargantua, the insatiable ogre on the Potomac.

I mean, we knew Trump would face rough conditions his first time sailing the USS Behemoth. But this is a crafty, nimble, ambitious personality. He may leave behind a global 'adjustment' before his time at the helm is over. If I seem more optimistic than you, I should mention this is partly a pose at times. At the gates of Doom, I will be the quietly cynical guy, not Mary Poppins.

Personally, my blood pressure pings every time Trump talks or tweets about NAFTA --  or intimates that Canada is fucking over the USA in this or that aspect of trade. The roots and routes of international trade are thick and deep as a mat, like a dermis, a shared flesh of circulation. I could hyperventilate and conjure up a crush of border taxes or anti-NAFTA  'adjustments' that suck marrow out of healthy bones. I could get anxious if I fed myself alarming mental images.   I feed them to Pollyanna instead.

Slash, crush, crunch crunch crunch.

So far this week, my pressure only spiked once. I think that Canada's automotive and softwood industries are safe for another little while. Be still my heart.

We are going to build a rocket-base in Nova Scotia, Bob! Not for SpaceX or a Mars shot, but hey.

Tony might know a bit about Musk since they are both from South Africa.

Are being a good administrator or being a money-manager lowly professions? So far he has done well on the personal money manager side creating entertaining properties, and he has made a very promising start as our country’s top administrator. Will individual American’s capital grow and our national debt decrease under President Trump? We will know this year.

And I say half-jokingly, would it be so bad if our resort, tourist, and entertainment industries prosper? He is the man to achieve that! And if the smartest and finest people on the planet want to legally immigrate to America, would anyone complain? Is President Trump 'the star', in the following lyrics?

Peter

"America" by Neil Diamond.

Far,
We've been traveling far
Without a home
But not without a star

Free,
Only want to be free
We huddle close
Hang on to a dream

On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again,
They're coming to America

Home
Don't it seem so far away
Oh, we're traveling light today
In the eye of the storm
In the eye of the storm

Home
To a new and a shiny place
Make our bed and we'll say our grace
Freedom's light burning warm
Freedom's light burning warm

Everywhere around the world
They're coming to America
Ev'ry time that flag's unfurled
They're coming to America

Got a dream to take them there
They're coming to America
Got a dream they've come to share
They're coming to America

They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
Today, Today,
Today, Today, Today

My country 'tis of thee (today)
Sweet land of liberty (today)
Of thee I sing (today)
Of thee I sing
Today, Today, Today
Today, today, today......

I seem to vaguely remember asking Tony about other South Africans but I do not remember what he said, so maybe he will add something. Usually if I rehear something or reread it, suddenly bingo! I can quote you back a truncated transcript.

Leonard Cohen does have excellent back-up singers, but I am in awe that someone with such a gravelly voice can be an emotionally moving performer. And Cohen is funny but very wrong. What evidence does he offer that people have not been doing as they please all these years within the framework of “after you did it or said it, you were free to resay or redo it?” When has our Constitution been negated in any way that has not been reasonably overturned by ‘the people?” Our greatest fault, tolerated slavery and Jim Crow laws, lasted far too long, as did denying women the vote, but our system eventually did the thing it was designed to do: protect individual rights with equal protection under the law. We have moved away from the privileged rich or those on the inside, getting the golden goose in the courts. Well, that new show “Bull” does show how special privilege can still be utilized it you got the bucks or the pull. Leonardo De Cohen reminds me of the New Left during the Vietnam error trying to destroy the best thing that has ever happened: The United States of America. And what would they replace it with? Communist slavery with their ilk in charge of your life.
