My money is on Vladimir Putin. I mean, if I were in the White House, he would not stand a chance, but given the actual state of affairs... Whatever happens in Syria will be to the best advantage of Russia.

If you were in the White House peace wouldn't stand a chance.

That wouldn't make you special. Look at what's knocking on the door.

More cowbell.

FYI...

The series of 10 audio clips were released by the prime minister's office and sourced to the Turkish Armed Forces.

In the recordings, a voice is heard saying in broken English: "This is Turkish Air Force speaking on guard. You are approaching Turkish airspace. Change your heading south immediately." Most of the audio is garbled and barely comprehensible but the tone of the voice gets more agitated as the warnings appear to go unnoticed.

The audio that was released only involved Turkish warnings, no replies by a Russian pilot. It was not clear if Russian replies were received but not released by the Turkish government, or if the Russian pilots never replied to the warnings or if they never heard the warnings.

If the leadership of the Turkish military has not yet been politically run over by the guy running the government, there will soon be a coup.

armor needs a three-legged stool of which it is one leg--the other two are infantry support and dominance in the air as tanks on the ground are dead meat for air to ground rockets and bombs (and drones will soon mean the end of armor altogether except for bad weather)

I think you are quite correct about that.

FYI(s):

The U.S. aircraft carrier Harry S Truman and its battle group left Norfolk, Virginia, last week amid speculation that the Truman would stop in the eastern Mediterranean to launch missions with the De Gaulle before taking up station in the Persian Gulf.

In addition, the Russian missile cruiser Moskva was being sent to the eastern Mediterranean to provide more air cover for the Russian presence in Syria "with an aim to destroy any target that may pose a danger," Rudskoy said.

A TOW missile is not a mortar in my parlance...however, maybe that has changed...

Lt. Gen. Sergey Rudskoy, of the Russian General Staff, said that one Russian marine was killed when two Russian Mi-8 helicopters went on a search-and-rescue mission for the two Su-24 crew members. One of the helicopters was damaged by small arms fire and made an emergency landing in which the marine was killed, Rudskoy said.

"The helicopter was destroyed by mortar fire conducted from the territory controlled by illegal, armed groups," Rudskoy said.

U.S. officials said the downed jet was one of two Sukhoi Su-24s that were intercepted by two Turkish F-16s over the area where Turkey's Hatay province meets the Syrian border along the Mediterranean coast.

Turkish officials said the Su-24s had violated Turkish airspace. The F-16 fired only after at least 10 warnings to leave the area were ignored, the officials said.

Russian officials just as adamantly maintained that the Su-24 was fired upon without warning over Syrian territory. Video from the private Turkish broadcaster Haberturk TV showed the Su-24, a two-seat, swept-wing aircraft with the NATO code name "Fencer," trailing smoke and going down in flames in a wooded area.

U.S. officials confirmed that the Turkish planes gave at least 10 warnings.

"We could hear everything" that was said in the radio transmissions, and "the Russians didn't respond," said Army Col. Steve Warren, a spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve in Baghdad. He also said that there was no "mayday" emergency call from the Russian plane.

Play the tape then...

Some say Western "allies" are flying fewer sorties after deployment of Russian air defense system.
Biggest threat is accidental shoot down (or an invasion by Turkey) that could trigger war.

Thanks for the info Wolf. Warning Russia not to arm their planes with air to air missiles is smart and the same goes for us. An invasion of northern Syria by Turkey, where the ethnic “Turkmen” live, is probable even if it is not publicized as an invasion. The news is once again reporting that Putin is more concerned with killing the opponents of Assad, some who are our allies, and not Isis.

I saw some skepticism about my recounted on OL but un-sourced, news stories that the Russian Mafia is an arm of the KGB (or whatever it is now called. The GRU?), and also that Russia’s Putin was against destroying those oil tanker trucks taking the oil out of Iraq and Syria because he was getting a cut of the loot. Still think that?

KGB and Red Army were cut by Yeltsin. Russian Mafia is almost entirely former Red Army enlisted men and local gangsters (in America that would be Crips, Bloods, and MS-13 for instance). No credible news source links Putin to gangsters or Syrian oil shipments to Turkey. You have the facts confused re bombing ISIS refineries and up to 1000 trucks to smuggle Syrian oil to Turkey. The U.S. did not (and didn't want to) bomb ISIS oil infrastructure. Russia did it as soon as they had operational air force at Latakia. Turkey is an open corridor for ISIS recruits, arms trade, vehicles, and ammo supply, at least some of it coming from CIA and pro-West Arabia. The prize in Syria is a gas pipeline from Qatar and Saudi Arabia through Turkey to Western Europe, to break the Russian monopoly. It's about bigger stuff than corrupt Turkish officials paying ISIS half-price $20 bbl for Syrian oil, which is pretty much kaput, because Russia has bombed them to bits. Thanks for the facts, Wolf. In my own search of news stories I saw Russia accusing the president of Turkey and his family of receiving ISIS oil money and the story about Putin not wanting his oil and money pipeline stopped, so he was against hitting the trucks. Add on to that that the fact that he is not seriously targeting ISIS and he is a very suspicious character.

I have also read two books where Putin has called on the Russian Mafia to do his bidding and if you remember that very graphic and real video showing a Russian hit on a political opponent. Christ almighty. The hitman was ordered to cause brain damage using a hammer but not to kill the guy, as a reminder to the opposition.

We shall see if Putin is serious about killing the enemy of his enemy which is US.

Reminds me of English tax collectors clubbing James Otis in 1769. World leaders like Putin don't mess with picuyune details. I think you've been reading dated material, gossip from 10-20 years ago.

Good new update at MoA --

The U.S. tends to avoids attacking countries with competent air defense and Syria has by now an excellent one.

But what else could Obama do when IS claims the attack in San Bernadino? The pressure to "do something" and to escalate and escalate again will be immense. Every presidential candidate will demand that Obama sends an army division or two to destroy IS.

The way through Syria is closed. The Iraqis will not allow more U.S. troops on their ground. Several Shia militia in Iraq have announced that they will attack any additional U.S. forces. Using the Kurdish areas in Iraq to attack IS would be very dangerous as supplies would have to go through treacherous Turkey, which is secretly allied with IS, and pass through areas where the Turks and the Kurdish PKK are fighting each other. Going through Jordan and from there to Anbar province in Iraq would enrage the many IS followers in Jordan and destroy that state too.

Making peace with Assad, as even tea party candidate Ted Cruz now recommends, to then attack IS would be the logical way to go. But Obama and the people around him are too presumptuous to take such a step. They can not admit that they were wrong all along and that Assad and Putin were right.

The image is totally "Photoshopped," you BufFoon. It's two images!

Seriously, Pup? You come here and pose as an accomplished cinematographer, and yet you can't see the glaringly obvious differences in lighting, scale, lens length, color and perspective, not to mention the hard line seam between the two images? You can't tell that Kerry is standing and Obama is sitting? Jesus H. Criminy!

The image is a side-by-side composite serving as a montage still of the video that it introduces. Watch the video, dumbass. See how the clips come from two different events in two different rooms?

Heh.
